Earlier today (9th May 2023), Nintendo revealed that its forecast for the sales of the Switch handheld console sales isn’t look too great this year either. The company is expected a drop in overall Switch sales by the financial year ending at March 2024. So here are all the details.
Nintendo Switch sales expected to drop for the 3rd year in row
According to the Japanese video game company, the sales of the Switch console is believed to drop to just 15 million units this year. This would mark a 17 percent annual drop and even a third consecutive year of decline in sales. The original Switch had launched around seven years ago and has seen great success in the global markets. However, despite supply chain issues having eased recently, the sales of the console is still dropping.
As per Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, “It’s difficult for Switch hardware and software sales to maintain the same pace”. For those unaware, the company doesn’t just make hardware and the popular handheld consoles, but even develops games exclusively for its proprietary platform. These titles are some of the biggest series in the gaming industry and have even spun off successful movies as well like the recent ‘Super Mario’.
Notably, there have also been many rumors regarding Nintendo working on a sequel to the Switch and its refreshes. Although, Serkan Toto, Kantan Games consultancy founder stated that “Based on the guidance, it is crystal clear the launch of a ‘Switch 2’ or entirely new piece of hardware can be ruled out this fiscal year”. Meaning, the Switch 2 model is still a while away from being officially announced.
