WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform owned by Meta, is taking steps to stay ahead in the competitive market by introducing new features and improving user experience. In its latest updates, WhatsApp is working on allowing users to choose usernames instead of relying solely on phone numbers for identification and also working on a redesigned settings page.

WhatsApp is working on usernames as an alternative to phone numbers

The WhatsApp beta version 2.23.11.15 update for Android includes the username feature. This feature will allow users to set unique usernames for their accounts. By doing so, WhatsApp aims to enhance privacy by offering an alternative to phone numbers for identifying contacts. Users will have the option to choose a memorable username, enabling them to connect with others within the app without sharing their phone numbers.

In addition to usernames, WhatsApp is also revamping its settings page. The latest beta updates for Android (versions 2.23.11.16 and 2.23.11.18) showcase a redesigned settings interface. The new design includes three convenient shortcuts: profile, privacy, and contacts. By selecting the app settings shortcut, users will have quick access to a revamped settings page, which features a prominent profile photo and a shortcut to view QR codes. The settings section will also be reorganized to make it easier for users to find and adjust various options.

It’s important to note that these features are currently in beta and will be released in a future update of WhatsApp. With the introduction of usernames and a redesigned settings page, WhatsApp aims to provide users with enhanced privacy and improved usability.

WhatsApp has recently introduced the ability to edit sent messages within a 15-minute window. This feature allows users to modify a message they have sent by long-pressing on it and selecting the “Edit” option. The message editing feature is currently being rolled out globally and will be available to all users in the coming weeks.
