In a recent interview with GRAMMY.com, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. shed light on the decision-making process behind the rule amendments for the 2024 GRAMMY Awards. Mason explained how these changes were implemented to ensure that the GRAMMYs adapt to emerging technologies and create a level playing field for artists worldwide.

AI Elements and Instrumentation can still be considered for Awards

One significant area of focus in the new GRAMMY Awards rules is the inclusion of artificial intelligence (AI). The guidelines explicitly state that only human creators are eligible for consideration, nominations, and wins. Mason emphasized the importance of accounting for AI’s impact on human artistic expression, as it is poised to shape the future of the music industry.

Mason acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the full extent of AI’s influence and expressed concerns about potential challenges it may pose. To address this, the Recording Academy has taken proactive steps, including hosting a summit with industry leaders, tech entrepreneurs, streaming platforms, and artists, to discuss the role of AI and the future of music.

Regarding the protocols instituted for the 2024 GRAMMYs, Mason clarified that while music made with generative AI and content can be submitted, the awards will only be granted to human creators who have made significant creative contributions in the appropriate categories. AI-generated voice or instrumentation will be considered, but in songwriting-based categories, human involvement must be predominant. Similarly, performance categories will exclusively feature human performers. Mason explained that while AI may contribute to the songwriting or music creation process, the ultimate recognition and GRAMMYs will be reserved for human creators.

These new rules and guidelines demonstrate the Recording Academy’s commitment to embracing change while upholding the integrity of artistic expression. By considering the impact of AI and creating a framework that acknowledges human contributions, the GRAMMYs aim to navigate the evolving landscape of the music industry and ensure a fair and inclusive platform for all artists.

As the 2024 GRAMMY Awards approach, the Recording Academy’s proactive approach and dedication to staying ahead of technological advancements showcase their commitment to recognizing and celebrating the artistry and creativity of human musicians in an ever-changing musical landscape.
