Valve is apparently cracking down on games that utilize AI-generated content that infringes on copyright. The company has rejected games that are built using these assets made using artificial intelligence on its popular Steam library of games and applications.

Steam won’t publish games with copyright-infringing AI-made content

The known video game developer and publisher was initially rumored to be rejecting games with AI-based content and has finally commented on this matter. The brand’s spokesperson, Kaci Aitchison Boyle, stated that Valve is not trying to discourage the use of AI on the Steam platform, but it is working on making sure that the technology does not infringe on copyright laws that are in place.

Boyle further added that “Our priority, as always, is to try to ship as many of the titles we receive as we can. We welcome and encourage innovation, and AI technology is bound to create new and exciting experiences in gaming. While developers can use these AI technologies in their work with appropriate commercial licenses, they can not infringe on existing copyrights.” Thus, the company has begun rejecting these games and has even started refunding submission credits to those that are not abiding by the new standards related to AI-generated assets.

Since the explosive growth of AI applications in recent times, the video game industry is unsurprisingly one of the segments that are facing such hurdles. Other markets like the music industry are also facing many problems owing to people using AI to make songs that create songs using the voice of popular artists and celebrities. Notably, this news also arrives a couple of weeks after the company dropped a massive feature packed update for the Steam platform.
