Foldable Smartphones have finally started gaining momentum in China’s smartphone market. Following the CINNO Research data report, the foldable smartphone market share is inflated by 72% based on a Year-on-Year comparison. It is pretty surprising to see the positive trend in foldable sales when overall Smartphone sales have reduced for eleven straight quarters.

The latest foldable launch by Huawei has made it secure 1st position in the sales list. Thanks to the Huawei Mate X3 and its exciting design and specifications have led to solid sales in Q2 2023. The onboard software also enabled the foldable smartphone to garner maximum sales. However, Oppo managed to gain 2nd position with Samsung tailing at the 3rd position. Samsung sales mostly relied on the previous year’s foldable i.e. Fold 4 and Flip 4 as the new foldable were introduced recently.

The Vivo, Honor, and Xiaomi remained at the 4th, 5th, and 6th position, respectively in terms of sales for the first half of 2023.

Among all the OEMs, Huawei manages to secure half of the overall foldable market share. Meanwhile, Samsung follows with the ~40% overall market share. Other manufacturers’ share is also set to increase with good sales in the recent months.

Flip or Fold: Which design rules the market?

The Horizontal Flip aka Fold form factor seems to be attracting more buyers due to its large display. The report indicates that the Fold-form factor catered to 55% of sales. In this form factor, Huawei manages to secure 1st rank followed by Samsung and Honor at consecutive positions.

However, the vertical display aka Flip form factor is now slowly catching up.

Interestingly, Huawei holds China’s ultra-high-end foldable smartphone market with phones priced above 10000 Yuan (~$1383).
