Qualcomm has remained an exception in the game of the smartphone chipset industry with the launch of some quality SoCs over time. It has remained the perfect choice for the Android OEMs for their respective smartphones. The company seems extending the same prowess over to the XR and AR platforms with the launch of the new Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, respectively. The powerful features and multiple sensor support have made it to the Meta’s Quest 3 VR goggles.

Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Features and Improvements

Much-awaited upgrade for the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 is finally here after a wait of over 3 years. But, considering the specifications and features, it seems worth the wait.

The new chipset offers a 2.5x increase in GPU performance, an 8x improvement in AI performance, and significantly more efficiency. As per layman’s terms, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 can power two 3K displays and can simultaneously manage 10 cameras and sensors at a time.

Considering the performance and the complex tasks it performs, the size is significantly small and the company has even managed to calibrate the power demand. Speaking on the occasion Qualcomm’s VP and GM of XR, said, “The key challenges are on power, latency, size and then performance — and performance, of course, is very much tied to display resolution,” he said. “I cannot put 100 watts on your head. At best, maybe 20. Ideally, closer to 10 and 15. So that’s the magic that we have to work: how to put it all in one piece of silicone, that is affordable.”

The Snapdragon XR2 offers performance on par with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The chipset extends support for WiFi 7, 3K resolution for Eye, and brings full-color passthrough support for a comfortable viewing experience. It does not require any external battery due to increased power efficiency. The better AI capabilities have compelled VR makers like Meta to use it in Meta Quest 3. However, the improved connectivity options with surely enable lower latency and network lags.

The advancements in the chip have led to improved load times, crips details while playing immersive games, and enhanced better life. The Meta Quest 3’s 4K’s Infinite Display runs smoothly while offering 1218 pixels per inch for the device. Pre-orders for the Meta Quest 3 are already live.

Qualcomm also introduced Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 SoC primarily for the smart Glasses.
