A year after Qualcomm, Samsung, and Google‘s joint XR project announcement, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform has finally arrived. This upgraded chip, succeeding the XR2 Gen 2 used in Meta Quest 3, offers significant improvements in graphics processing, potentially rivaling the performance of Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro headset.

The XR2+ Gen 2’s standout feature is its support for a remarkable 4.3K resolution per eye and a 90fps refresh rate. This represents a significant jump over the XR2 Gen 2’s 3K resolution which will offer users a sharper, more immersive VR experience. 

The XR2+ Gen 2 also boasts improved tracking capabilities. It can support up to 12 cameras and powerful on-device AI, enabling VR headsets to accurately track user movements and surroundings. This should allow for more intuitive navigation and interaction within virtual spaces.

Qualcomm has also upped the ante in terms of processing power. The XR2+ Gen 2 boasts a 15% increase in GPU frequency and a 20% bump in CPU frequency compared to its predecessor. This translates to improved performance and the ability to handle even the most demanding VR applications.

To accelerate VR headset development, Qualcomm has partnered with Goertek to create a new reference design. This pre-built platform comes in two configurations — one powered by the XR2 Gen 2 for 3K resolution and another powered by the XR2+ Gen 2 for the full 4K experience. 

Qualcomm has confirmed that the new silicon will be used in the upcoming XR products from Samsung and Google. It’s also partnering with at least five other hardware makers, including HTC, to popularize its new platform. From what we know so far, Samsung is aiming to compete with Apple’s highly anticipated Vision Pro headset. With Samsung’s Unpacked event approaching, we might see exciting VR announcements on the horizon.
