India has recently made a significant diplomatic gesture by awarding the Padma Bhushan, one of its highest civilian honors, to Liu Young-Way, the CEO of Foxconn, a major Taiwanese electronics manufacturer. This marks the first time India has bestowed such an honor on a Taiwanese individual, a move that sends a clear message to Beijing amid the current geopolitical climate.

He is the CEO and Chairman of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., commonly known as Foxconn, which is the world’s largest producer of electronic components. Under Liu’s leadership, Foxconn has made significant strides in the global technology sector.
In addition to his role at Foxconn, Liu has founded several successful companies. He established Young Micro Systems, a motherboard company, in 1988, and later ventured into IC design with the creation of two more companies focusing on PC chipsets and ADSL IC designs. These entrepreneurial efforts reflect Liu’s deep expertise and innovative spirit in the tech industry.

The company operates a large iPhone factory in Tamil Nadu, employing around 40,000 people, and has announced plans for further expansion with an investment of $1.6 billion. This includes a proposed chip packaging and testing plant in collaboration with HCL Group. These developments are part of Foxconn’s strategy to diversify its manufacturing base beyond China and are aligned with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to position India as a major manufacturing hub in Asia.
The award to Liu Young-Way comes as India seeks to deepen ties with global business leaders and attract foreign investment. The Padma Bhushan, awarded on the eve of India’s Republic Day, is a recognition of Liu’s contributions to the technology industry and reflects the strengthening relationship between India and Taiwan in the economic and technological domains.
