While competitors like Apple and Google offer car crash detection on their smartphones, Samsung‘s Galaxy line has lacked this potentially life-saving feature. However, recent discoveries hint at a possible change in the near future.

Samsung Car Crash Detection(1)

Car crash detection uses a phone’s sensors, like accelerometers and microphones, to detect if you’ve been in an accident. If it does, it can automatically call emergency services or notify your contacts. This can be crucial in situations where you’re unable to reach for help yourself.

Even though Samsung phones have the right hardware for this, the company hasn’t made it work yet. But there’s some good news! Android Police’s Mishaal Rahman found clues that Samsung might be working on adding a car crash detection feature.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 car crash detection

Rahman discovered a sensor named “Car Crash Detect Wakeup” while exploring the Tasker app on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and S24 Ultra phones.

The sensor is reportedly a composite sensor or a virtual sensor that gathers data from physical sensors like the gyroscope and accelerometer. Its purpose is to prevent batching sensor events so it can promptly report potential car crashes to the relevant apps.

Additionally, Rahman uncovered a hidden app named “MoccaMobile” in the One UI 6.1 build, containing code related to starting and stopping the car crash sensor. This app was present in One UI 5.1.1 for the Galaxy Z Fold 5, One UI 6 for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and One UI 6.1 for the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

While these findings strongly suggest the inclusion of car crash detection, Samsung has not officially announced any plans to introduce car crash detection for the Galaxy S24 or Z Fold series. It is possible that the feature is undergoing testing for a future release, and only time will reveal the company’s plans.

In any case, the addition of car crash detection would be a valuable addition for Samsung users.
