Apple is gearing up for a major refresh of its Mac lineup later this year with the introduction of the M4 series chips.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, known for his accurate Apple leaks, in his latest Power On newsletter has revealed a detailed roadmap for the upcoming M4 Macs, spanning from late 2024 to the second half of 2025.

According to Gurman, the first wave of M4 Macs is expected to arrive around the end of 2024. The initial refresh will target two popular models: the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the 24-inch iMac.

Following the initial wave, Apple will introduce higher-end models throughout the remainder of 2024 and into early 2025.

This includes new iterations of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, which will be powered by the more powerful M4 Pro and M4 Max chips.

The Mac mini will also see an update with both M4 and M4 Pro configurations around the same timeframe.

By spring 2025, the refresh is expected to reach the MacBook Air lineup. Gurman mentions we can expect brand new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models equipped with the M4 chip during that time.

Moreover, the professional desktop segment will see its M4 update later in the cycle. The Mac Studio is expected to receive a variant powered by a high-end M4 chip sometime in mid-2025.

Finally, the powerhouse Mac Pro, catering to professionals with extreme processing needs, is slated for an upgrade to the M4 Ultra chip in the latter half of 2025.

Interestingly, Gurman notes that Apple internally tested an M3 Ultra chip but says it is “all but assured that at least some of Apple’s high-end desktops” will skip the M3 chip series.

A key takeaway from Gurman’s report is Apple is said to prioritize artificial intelligence (AI) with the M4 chip series. However, the details of this focus are under wraps.
