Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is facing its first antitrust fine from the European Union. The tech giant is accused of bundling its classified advertising service, Facebook Marketplace, with its main social network platform, giving Marketplace an unfair advantage.

The fine could be huge, up to $13.4 billion

The European Commission alleges that Meta abused its dominant market position by imposing unfavorable conditions on competing online classified ad services that advertise on Facebook or Instagram. This practice, according to the EU, stifled competition.

Meta could face a hefty fine of up to $13.4 billion, representing 10% of its 2023 global revenue. The company has denied the allegations, maintaining that its actions benefit consumers and promote competition.

The EU Commission is expected to make a final decision in the coming months, with a potential fine to be issued before the departure of EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager in November.
