Apple launched the iPhone 16 series with larger batteries and faster charging. While Apple didn’t reveal the exact battery capacity and charging speed of the new iPhones, a Chinese regulatory filing showed that all iPhone 16 models are rated for up to 45W charging speeds. It should, in theory, offer much faster charging to the new models as compared to their predecessors.
However, we already know that the wattage of the power adapter or the rated speed of the phone barely matters as much as its specific tuning and the atmosphere.
To find out how fast Apple’s latest and best iPhone actually charges, ChargerLAB performed a comprehensive test with several compatible charges, and the results are disappointing, to say the least.
First of all, ChargerLAB shows that the phone doesn’t have an E-marker chip (or Electronic Marker chip), which is a protocol controller in USB Type-C cables that manages power delivery and data communication. USB-PD chargers with support for high current output and faster data transfer rates uses this tech.
iPhone 16 Pro Max charging test with Apple chargers
With Apple’s official 140W charger and the original cable that comes in the box, the iPhone 16 Pro Max was only charging at 30.19W in the test, which is much lower than the reported 45W charging speed. You can see the charging speeds ChargerLAB recorded with other official Apple adapters in the image below.
So we can say that the charging speed of the iPhone 16 Pro Max caps at around 30W. This is only slightly higher than the 27W rated charging speed of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. While this is an improvement, the 45W charging speed can be misleading for people thinking of upgrading to one of the latest models.
Notably, ChargerLAB tested the phone with several third-party chargers where the phone achieved a maximum charging speed of 31.86W, very similar to the speed with the official chargers.
Based on the results, we can say that the charging speed of the iPhone 16 Pro Max is capped at around 30W, which is only slightly higher than the 27W rated charging speed of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. While this is an improvement, the 45W charging speed can be misleading for people thinking of upgrading to one of the latest models.
