According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is set to release an updated AirTag in the first half of 2025. This will mark the first major revision to Apple’s tracking device since its introduction in 2021.

Enhanced Tracking Technology with Improved Accuracy
Gurman indicates that the new model will come with a more advanced chip, likely the second-generation ultra-wideband (UWB) chip, which was recently seen in the iPhone 15. This updated technology is expected to enhance the accuracy of the AirTag’s location tracking.
The original AirTag features Apple’s U1 chip, which utilizes UWB technology along with Bluetooth to connect with Apple’s Find My network, enabling users to locate their devices with precision. Its stainless-steel body is compact and lightweight, offering IP67 water and dust resistance, which provides some protection from the elements.
The device also has a small built-in speaker, which helps users find their AirTag by emitting sound when activated through the Find My app. The back cover is removable, allowing users to replace the battery when needed.
Using the Find My app, the AirTag can be tracked on a map. Additionally, the app provides more detailed guidance with sound, haptic feedback, and visual directions using ARKit, accelerometer, and gyroscope capabilities.
In cases where an AirTag is misplaced, it can be put into Lost Mode, which notifies the user when it’s located or comes within range. If another person finds the AirTag, they can tap it with an NFC-enabled device, displaying the owner’s contact information if provided.
Apple has integrated privacy features into the AirTag to prevent unwanted tracking. For instance, the Bluetooth signal identifiers used by the AirTag rotate frequently to avoid tracking by unauthorized parties, and communication within the Find My network is encrypted end-to-end.
The upcoming AirTag is also rumored to integrate with Apple’s Vision Pro headset, though specific details on this feature remain unclear. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned last year that AirTag’s production had been delayed until 2025 but confirmed that both he and Gurman expect a release next year. As of now, there are no indications of any design changes.
