Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicks off June 9, and while new operating systems are the main event, some exciting AirPods upgrades are also expected. From clever head gestures to camera controls, Apple is reportedly cooking up features that will make its wireless earbuds even more intuitive and versatile for everyday use.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple is testing five new AirPods features that could steal the show at WWDC. First up, enhanced head gestures are coming to AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4, building on last year’s nod-to-answer and shake-to-decline for calls and notifications. These new gestures will let users tweak Conversation Awareness volume—say, lowering audio during chats—and revert to original noise settings with a simple head movement, no stem-tapping needed. Speaking of the stem, a new Camera Control feature will let you snap photos on your iPhone or iPad by clicking the AirPods’ stem, perfect for hands-free shots.
Sleep auto-pause is another gem, using sleep detection to pause music if you doze off while wearing your AirPods. Then there’s Audio Mix, introduced with the iPhone 16 series, which uses machine learning to separate speech from background noise. Apple is reportedly working on a “studio quality” mic mode for AirPods, offering In-frame, Studio, and Cinematic voice options, though details are still scarce. Lastly, an improved pairing experience for shared iPads, likely aimed at classrooms, promises smoother connections with fewer manual steps.
While Apple is keeping mum for now, these features could roll out with iOS 19 or a firmware update. With WWDC just days away, we’re excited to see how these upgrades will make AirPods smarter and more seamless for users.
