Nokia might be eyeing a return to the smartphone scene — though its latest move raised more questions than answers. Nokia’s community manager recently posted an open call on the r/Nokia subreddit, inviting “large-scale mobile manufacturers” to explore partnership opportunities via nokia.com/partners. The post, however, has since been deleted, adding a curious twist to an already unusual approach.

The now-deleted post stirred fresh speculation about Nokia’s future in smartphones. While reaching out to potential manufacturing partners on Reddit seems like an odd choice for serious business talks, the fact that Nokia floated the idea publicly suggests it’s at least considering a return to the market. After all, its long-running partnership with HMD Global — the brand behind recent Nokia phones — is winding down, with HMD reportedly shifting focus to its own devices. Nokia, meanwhile, has stayed in the feature phone space, reviving classics like the 3310.

HMD’s licensing deal reportedly expires in 2026, giving Nokia the freedom to seek new manufacturing partners. Past collaborators like Foxconn or Wingtech — who reportedly handled over half of Nokia’s smartphone production in earlier years — could be in the mix. The goal likely remains the same: affordable devices with global reach, backed by Nokia’s strong patent portfolio, especially in 5G tech.

Under HMD, Nokia’s smartphones, like the XR21, focused on sustainability and rugged design but struggled to impress on software support and specs. A new partner could offer a chance to shake off that reputation.

Even though the Reddit post was short-lived, it hints that Nokia isn’t ready to leave the smartphone world behind. Whether this was a marketing misstep or an early move in a bigger comeback plan, it’s a story worth watching.
