Apple is reportedly preparing a new entry-level MacBook powered by its upcoming A18 Pro chip, and it could be the most affordable Mac laptop in years.
According to a new report by Digitimes, the device will feature a 12.9-inch display and could start between $599 and $699.

For instance, the most affordable MacBook you can buy right now is the 13-inch M4 MacBook Air, which starts at $999. So if this rumor pans out, we’re talking about a price drop of roughly $400, which should be enough to tempt Windows and Chromebook users who’ve been eyeing the Mac side for years.
A new entry point for Mac enthusiasts
As inflation keeps pushing prices higher, a sub-$700 MacBook could offer a cheaper entry point into Apple’s laptop ecosystem without sacrificing too much on performance or design.
The big twist here is that the laptop will use the same type of processor found in Apple iPhones. That’s unusual for a Mac, which typically runs on Apple’s M-series chips. But it does make some sense. An A-series processor could help Apple cut costs and create a lightweight, fanless machine that still handles everyday tasks smoothly.

Apple hasn’t made a push into this lower-priced laptop tier in years. A model like this could help it compete in the market segments it previously left to Windows PCs and cheaper Chromebooks.
As for timing, a report from MacRumors suggests that the device could launch sometime in late 2025 or early 2026. It is expected to reach annual shipments of between 5 million and 7 million units, which could boost Apple’s total MacBook volume from the current 17 million to 18 million units by 30% to 40%.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also claims the laptop will be available in Silver, Blue, Pink, and Yellow finishes.
