Add GIZMOCHINA as Preferred Source on Google
Not every chip update comes with big fanfare or a completely new design. Sometimes the most useful changes are the practical ones that keep an established platform going when supply conditions shift. MediaTek has just done exactly that with a refreshed 4G processor aimed at cost-sensitive markets.
The company has listed the Helio G99+ on its official website. At its core, this is still the original Helio G99, the same proven 6nm TSMC design that launched years ago, with one key upgrade: memory support has moved from LPDDR4X (up to 4266 Mbps) to LPDDR5X (up to 5500 Mbps).
Everything else stays familiar. The CPU is still two Arm Cortex-A76 cores at 2.2 GHz plus six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0 GHz, the Mali-G57 MC2 GPU is unchanged, and features like UFS 2.2 storage, up to 108MP camera support, and the Cat-13 4G modem with dual VoLTE all carry over.
The real reason behind the G99+
Helio 4G chips mainly serve markets where keeping costs low matters more than chasing top performance. Lately, major DRAM makers have been shifting capacity toward higher-value products like HBM, LPDDR5X, and DDR5. Older production lines for LPDDR4X are being shut down or converted, which has tightened supply and pushed prices up.
By adding LPDDR5X support, the G99+ gives phone makers more flexibility. Smartphone makers can pick the memory that currently makes the most sense on price and availability, helping keep the overall bill of materials as low as possible without having to redesign the whole phone around a new chip.
This isn’t MediaTek’s first small update to the G99 family. Earlier versions like the G100 and G200 brought modest camera or GPU tweaks while keeping the same basic architecture. The G99+ follows the same practical approach: it’s responding to a broader industry memory shift rather than trying to win benchmark charts. For companies building affordable 4G phones in price-sensitive regions, being able to adapt to whatever DRAM is available without losing the established G99 software and hardware ecosystem is a real advantage.
In short, the Helio G99+ isn’t a big performance jump. It’s more of a supply-chain safeguard. By updating memory support on a mature, efficient platform, MediaTek is helping make sure cost-effective 4G phones can keep shipping smoothly even as older memory technologies phase out.
