Apple appears to be preparing a major update to the iPad mini, with the next-generation model expected to arrive later this year. Recent reports and leaked Apple code point to several hardware changes. The update could make the compact tablet considerably different from the current iPad Mini 7.
iPad Mini 8 key specs emerge
According to a Bloomberg report, the iPad Mini 8 could launch as early as October with an OLED display. The switch from LCD would bring deeper blacks, richer colors, and improved contrast. However, it remains unclear whether Apple will add ProMotion with refresh rates of up to 120Hz, as one recent report claims the tablet could remain limited to 60Hz.
The biggest performance upgrade could come from Apple’s A20 Pro chip. The new chip could deliver a substantial performance boost and potentially enable Apple’s more advanced Siri AI capabilities in iOS 27.
The front-facing camera is also expected to move to a landscape orientation, bringing the iPad Mini in line with Apple’s other newer iPad models. Leaked images spotted in Apple’s code show the camera positioned along the longer edge of the display. The tablet will also reportedly feature a small groove at the top of the display glass for the speaker, while the volume and power buttons will remain on the top.
Apple is also reportedly working on a new vibration-based speaker system that could eliminate traditional speaker holes. Bloomberg previously reported that the redesigned system could help the company improve water resistance, with Apple said to be testing a casing that offers protection similar to the iPhone.
The iPad Mini 8 is also rumored to have a slightly larger display, although exact dimensions have not been revealed. Apple raised the starting price of the current iPad Mini from $499 to $599 in July, so the OLED upgrade could potentially bring another price increase. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects the new iPad mini to launch by the end of October.
