Apple’s ambitions for wearable AI appear to be getting a serious hardware boost. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is developing new versions of the Apple Watch that will feature integrated cameras, marking a dramatic shift in how the device interacts with the world. These future Apple Watches, expected to arrive by 2027, will reportedly leverage cameras to scan surroundings, providing contextual information directly from your wrist.

Apple Watches Are Getting Cameras — But Not for Photos

For the standard Apple Watch models, Apple is said to be exploring a camera embedded within the display — though it’s still unclear if this will be through an under-display sensor or a visible cutout. On the beefier Apple Watch Ultra, the plan seems a little more practical: a visible camera module placed next to the Digital Crown, allowing users to point their wrist and scan objects quickly.

These cameras won’t be there for selfies or FaceTime calls — that’s still far-fetched for a screen this small. Instead, the focus is on extending Visual Intelligence, a feature that debuted on the iPhone 16 and allows users to point their device at an object or text and get instant AI-generated information. Think Google Lens, but more deeply integrated into Apple’s ecosystem, and soon, worn on your wrist.

But Apple isn’t stopping there. The company is also reportedly working on AirPods with built-in infrared cameras. While details are thin, the goal seems to be enabling spatial audio enhancements and possibly gesture-based controls that interact with AR environments. Imagine turning your head or waving your hand mid-air and having your devices respond intuitively.

All of this will hinge on Apple shifting Visual Intelligence from relying on third-party AI models like ChatGPT to its own in-house systems. That’s a big lift, but if Apple pulls it off, the wearable landscape could look very different by the end of this decade.
