A new rumor out of China suggests Samsung could turn to a rival for displays on future Galaxy S phones.

According to tipster Ice Universe on Weibo and DealSite on X, the president of Samsung Telecommunications recently met with BOE’s CEO to discuss the possibility of using BOE-made OLED panels in upcoming flagship Samsung phones.

For those unaware, BOE has been a long-time supplier of LCD panels for Samsung TVs. The meeting is said to have included a meaningful discussion on this part of the business, but people familiar with the matter claim that the two sides also discussed OLED panels for flagship S-series smartphones.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Samsung Display has always been the primary supplier for its premium devices like the Galaxy S lineup, Galaxy Z foldables, and even some Galaxy Tab models. That could change now, and there’s a good reason behind it.

It’s not a bad move, per se

You see, Samsung’s mobile division is facing pressure from rising prices for key components, including processors, camera sensors, and memory. Instead of passing all of those increases directly to consumers, Samsung is likely looking to cut costs elsewhere. And diversifying its display suppliers would be an obvious place to start.

BOE’s credibility as a display supplier has also improved in recent years. In fact, Apple already uses BOE-made OLED panels in some lower-end iPhone models. The reception has also been largely positive.

What’s ironic about this situation is the fact that Samsung Display recently won a patent infringement case against BOE. The legal battle temporarily blocked BOE from shipping OLED panels to the US. However, relations between the two companies seem to have eased out in recent months.

Of course, nothing is finalized yet. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the situation, so stay tuned for updates and more tech news as it happens.
