But why the company released two high-end phones in a row and what are the differences between them? You will find it out after reading this comparison between the main specifications of the ThinkPhone by Motorola and the Motorola Moto X40.

    Design

If you are looking for the most original design and also for the best build quality, you should go for the Motorola ThinkPhone without thinking twice. It is made with very premium materials, including aramid fiber for the back and aluminum for the frame. It has the MIL-STD-810H certification guaranteeing its resistance to drops from up to 1.3 meters and it is even waterproof and dustproof with the IP68 certification. Last but not least, its display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. This is a phone meant for business, which is why it is so sturdy and composed of durable materials. The Motorola Moto X40 comes with a glass back and an aluminum frame, as well as a curved display at the sides: it looks very elegant, but its build quality does not reach its internal opponent. However, it remains a waterproof and dustproof phone with the IP68 certification.

    Display

The display of the Motorola Moto X40 is slightly more interesting than the one found on the Motorola ThinkPhone. It is an OLED panel with a diagonal of 6.7 inches showing images with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, up to one billion colors, HDR10+ certification, and a 165 Hz refresh rate. The Motorola ThinkPhone has a P-OLED display with similar specifications: it sports a 6.6-inch diagonal, a Full HD+ resolution, up to one billion colors, and HDR10+ certification, but its refresh rate is lower: up to 144 Hz. Both phones feature stereo speakers and an in-display fingerprint reader.

    Specs & Software

The winner of the hardware comparison is the Motorola Moto X40 because it has a better chipset. We are talking about the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform: currently the best SoC by Qualcomm. It is built with a 4 nm production process and it runs at a max frequency of 3.2 GHz. The chipset is paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of native storage. With the Motorola Moto X40, you can get the same memory configuration, but with an inferior chipset: the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 built with a 4 nm production process and running at a max frequency of 3.19 GHz. Both phones run Android 13 out of the box.

    Camera

If your goal is to get the best camera, then you should opt for the Motorola Moto X40. It has a triple rear camera setup composed of a 50 MP main sensor with OIS, a 50 MP ultrawide shooter, and a 12 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. Definitely better than the sensors found on the Motorola ThinkPhone, which comes with a 50 MP sensor with OIS, a 13 MP ultrawide shooter, and a 2 MP depth sensor. Further, the X40 is equipped with a better selfie camera with a 60 MP resolution instead of just 32 MP.

    Battery

The Motorola ThinkPhone is able to provide a longer battery life because it is equipped with a bigger battery. The capacity of the battery is 5000 mAh, way bigger than the 4600 mAh unit found on its internal rival. On the other hand, the Motorola Moto X40 charges quicker because it supports 125W fast charging instead of just 68W.

    Price

You need at least $1100/€1000 to purchase the Motorola ThinkPhone globally, while the Moto X40 starts from $519/€477 in China. Which one would you pick?
