OPPO Reno9 Pro vs Reno8 Pro – What’s Changed?

    44

OPPO recently launched its upper mid-range Reno 9 series in China. Like its previous iterations, the phone brings upgrades in the design department as well as the specs, making it an attractive option for those who are looking to get a premium phone under $500 in China. The OPPO Reno9 series features three models, the Oppo Reno 9, Oppo Reno 9 Pro, and Oppo Reno 9 Pro Plus.

One of the highlights of the new Oppo Reno 9 series is its 7.19mm ultra thin and 170 grams weighing glass sandwich construction with a plastic frame. While the Reno 9 features the Snapdragon 778G SoC, the Pro model comes with the MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max chipset. The Pro model also features MariSilicon X NPU for image processing.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Reno9 Pro is very similar to its predecessor, the Reno8 Pro (Global) that features the same Dimensity 8100-Max chip and 6.7-inch display. Note that we will be comparing the Reno8 Pro Global model with the new Reno9 Pro model from China, because they both look very similar.

There are a lot of other differences too, but we’ll look at them in detail in the Reno9 Pro vs Reno8 Pro comparison down below.

    Design

The Reno9 series gets a upgrade in terms of its design. The new design focuses a lot on making the phone both compact and lightweight. The Reno 9 Pro measures the following in dimensions – 162.3 x 74.2 x 7.2 mm which is similar to the 161.2 x 74.2 x 7.3mm dimensions of the Reno8 Pro from a few months ago. However, what’s the real game changer is that the new model is a good 10 grams lighter than the 184 gram Reno8 Pro. This comes at no major cut down in the battery or processing department, making it a significant upgrade.

Another big change on the Reno9 Pro is the curved screen on the front. But more on that in the next section about the display.

In terms of the back too, the Reno9 Pro is a lot cleaner and refined than the Reno8 Pro. The new model comes with different textures for different color variants, offering a good choice for buyers. There are three color options for the Reno9 Pro – Black, Gold, Pink gradient. The Reno8 Pro comes in Green, Black, and a House of Dragon limited edition model.

    Display

The OPPO Reno9 Pro comes with a slightly different display than the Reno8 Pro. OPPO decided to include a beautiful curved screen panel on the new model instead of a flat screen one. Apart from the curves at the sides on the Reno9 Pro, the two phones have similar display specs. The two models feature a display with a diagonal of 6.7 inches, a Full HD Plus resolution of 1080 x 2412 pixels, a 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification, and a peak brightness of 950 nits.

Another difference in the display department is in the type of display protection used. The Reno8 Pro came with the Corning Gorilla Glass 5. However, the new Reno9 Pro features the Asahi Glass AGC DT-Star2 glass protection on top.

    Specs & Software

The OPPO Reno9 Pro and the 8 Pro share the same processor on board. They both feature the MediaTek Snapdragon 8100-Max based on a 5nm manufacturing process. The SoC is composed of four Cortex A78 CPU running at a max frequency of 2.8 GHz, four Cortex A55 CPUs running at 2.0 GHz, and a Mali-G610-MC6 GPU. Alongside the chipset, there are up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage on the new Reno9 Pro model. However, the older Reno8 Pro maxes out at 12GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

The Reno9 Pro runs on the latest ColorOS 13 based on Android 13 while the 8 Pro features the Android 12 based ColorOS 12.1

    Camera

In the camera department, there are some changes. The Reno9 Pro comes with a dual camera setup featuring a 50MP f/1.8 primary camera with multi-directional PDAF and another 8MP f/2.2 ultra wide angle shooter. This is actually identical to the first two sensors found on the older Reno8 Pro, too. However, the older model had a third 2MP macro sensor but giving up on this sensor to reduce the weight makes sense given that it’s a pretty useless sensor.

On the front, the Reno9 Pro and the Reno8 Pro both feature a 32MP front facing shooter with gyro-EIS.

    Battery

The battery capacity of 4500mAh remains the same on both the devices. However, OPPO decided to add a slower 67W charging on the Reno9 Pro instead of the faster 80W charger found on the Reno8 Pro model.

    Price

The starting price of the Reno9 Pro is around $500 in China while the OPPO Reno8 Pro started around Rs. 46,000 (~$575)  in markets like India.
