Design
Even though these are affordable phones, let’s talk about the aesthetics first. Given that they are low cost devices, they are not realized with premium materials: they are entirely made of polycarbonate with the exception of the display obviously. The OPPO A78 5G is more beautiful because the color variant and the design of the camera module are definitely more original. OPPO adopted a new design scheme distinguishing this phone from the mass. There is also to add that the OPPO A78 5G is a more compact device. But on the other hand, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 comes with a punch hole instead of the waterdrop notch found on its rival: the punch hole is a more modern solution for the design of the front panel. Last but not least, the Redmi Note 12 has the IP53 certification making it dust resistant and splash resistant.
Display
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 beats the OPPO A78 5G very easily thanks to its advanced display. It is an AMOLED panel made by Samsung with a diagonal of 6.67 inches, a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. It shows the images with more brilliant colors and deeper blacks thanks to the AMOLED technology, and it also features a higher resolution. With the OPPO A78 5G, you actually get an IPS LCD display with a diagonal of 6.56 inches, a HD+ resolution of 720 x 1612 pixels, a 90 Hz refresh rate, and a brightness up to 600 nits. Not only it is an inferior IPS panel, but it also comes with an inferior resolution and a lower refresh rate. On the other hand, the A78 5G is the only one with stereo speakers, thanks to which you can get a better audio experience.
Specs & Software
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 is equipped with a better processor: the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 built with a 6 nm production process. It is an SoC with an octa-core architecture composed of two Cortex A78 CPUs running at a max frequency of 2 GHz, six Cortex A55 cores running at 1.8 GHz, and an Adreno 619 GPU. Alongside the chipset, there are up to 6 GB of RAM and up to 128 GB of internal storage. The OPPO A78 5G gets a Dimensity 700 mobile platform by MediaTek built at 7 nm. It has an octa-core design composed of two Cortex A76 cores running at a max frequency of 2.2 GHz, six Cortex A55 cores running at 2 GHz, and a Mali G57 MC2. The processor is inferior, but this phone has more RAM: 8 GB instead of 6 GB, with 128 GB of native storage. Further, it comes with a more recent software version: ColorOS 13.
Camera
The OPPO A78 5G is equipped with a better main camera, sporting a 50 MP resolution. It is paired with a 2 MP depth sensor. The main camera of the Redmi Note 12 is inferior with its 48 MP resolution, but unlike its opponent, it adds an ultrawide shooter with a resolution of 8 MP, alongside a 2 MP depth sensor. It also comes with a better selfie snapper.
Battery
The batteries come with a capacity of 5000 mAh, but the Redmi Note 12 should last more thanks to its AMOLED display and its efficient chipset built at 6 nm. Charging speeds are the same.
Price
Redmi Note 12 starts from about $220 in India (Rs. 17,999), while the OPPO A78 5G costs about $233 (Rs. 18,999). The Redmi Note 12 has a better AMOLED display and a superior chipset, as well as an ultrawide shooter absent on its rival, that is why I personally prefer this device. Which one would you pick?
