Samsung Galaxy A14 5G vs OPPO A78 5G: Specs Comparison

    51

Earlier this month, Samsung launched one of its most affordable 5G phones ever: the Galaxy A14 5G is the base variant of the new A series for 2023 and it comes with a very interesting price tag, even though it supports the 5G connectivity. Meanwhile, OPPO launched a device in the global market located in the same price range: the OPPO A78 5G. This phone is an entry-level 5G handset as well and its price is the strongest point. So which one is the best in the price range? We decided to answer this question through this comparison between the main specifications of the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G and the OPPO A78 5G. Design

Unfortunately, these are entry-level phones, so you should not expect a premium design or premium materials. The design of the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G is very attractive because it is minimalistic: on the rear side, the cameras are placed directly in the rear cover, without any camera module. This is very good for those who like those protruding camera islands. The OPPO A78 5G is elegant as well, with two circles including the cameras on the rear side, and I define it even better because it has thinner bezels around the display. Both phones come with a waterdrop notch on the front, not the best solution for modern phones, but at least they do not have very thick bezels.

    Display

Just like the design, even the displays of these phones are not particularly satisfying. They are classic panels found on entry-level phones. If you want a more convincing display, then you should opt for the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G. It has a PLS LCD panel, so you won’t get the best image quality out there, but it offers a higher resolution than the OPPO A78 5G. It has a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2408 pixels, as well as a 90 Hz refresh rate and a diagonal of 6.6 inches. With the OPPO A78 5G, you get an IPS panel, but with a lower resolution: it is an HD+ display with a resolution of 720 x 1612 pixels and a 90 Hz refresh rate. Given the lower level of detail, we recommend the Samsung entry-level phone. Both phones feature side-mounted fingerprint readers for authentication.

    Specs & Software

The Samsung Galaxy A14 5G comes with different chipsets depending on the market. There are regions getting the Samsung Exynos 1330 chipset running at a max frequency of 2.4 GHz and regions getting the MediaTek Dimensity 700 built with a 7 nm production process and running at a max frequency of 2.2 GHz. On paper, the Exynos 1330 is a better chipset. Alongside these processes, there are up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 128 GB of native storage. With the OPPO A78 5G, you actually get a MediaTek Dimensity 700 mobile platform built with a 7 nm production process and paired with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of UFS 2.2 native storage. It is more or less a draw if we talk about the hardware, but the OPPO A78 5G comes with more recent software out of the box: it runs ColorOS 13. It is also equipped with stereo speakers.

    Camera

The Samsung Galaxy A14 5G is a better camera phone, but the differences are marginal. Both phones have the same 50 MP main camera, as well as a 2 MP depth sensor, but the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G adds a 2 MP macro camera and it has a better selfie camera with a resolution of 16 MP.

    Battery

The batteries have the same capacity: 5000 mAh, but the OPPO A78 5G should last more on a single charge because the resolution of the display is lower. Further, it is able to charge quicker thanks to 33W fast charging.

    Price

The starting price of the Samsung Galaxy A14 5G is $169/€155 (in the configuration with just 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of storage), while the OPPO A78 5G costs about $250/€230 (in the 8/128 GB configuration). Which one would you pick?
