Does it make sense to buy Xbox Series S 512GB in 2023?

Last month at Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft announced a 1TB version of Xbox Series S. This variant of the console comes exclusively in Carbon Black color.

It is priced at $350 in the US but costlier in most other markets.  It will be available for purchase in September ahead of Starfield‘s release.

Prior to this, since its debut, Xbox Series S was only available in a 512GB version in white color. Although there are expansion cards, they were too costly until recently.

More storage is generally considered a positive in consoles as you can store more games. But should everyone get the new expensive variant or is the original affordable variant enough? I try to answer this question in this article.

Should you buy Xbox Series S 512GB in 2023?

Xbox Series S is one of the three current-gen gaming consoles, the other two being Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. It is the most affordable, starting at only $300.

To keep the price low, Microsoft has equipped this console with only 512GB SSD. You get around 350GB of usable space for your games.

This amount of storage is definitely low for heavy gamers. But you must understand that Series S is not meant for serious gamers.

Xbox Series S is targeted at casual and first-time gamers. Thus, it has less graphics power and storage compared to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

The primary audience for Xboss Series S would most likely pick up a Game Pass subscription. Also, they wouldn’t play multiple AAA titles at the same time.

In simpler words, those considering serious gaming shouldn’t even buy Series S. Perhaps, they could get one as a spare for a bedroom or kids.

So if you are one of those who want to try gaming without breaking the bank or you are simply a casual gamer, the Xbox Series S 512GB is still worth buying in 2023. If you already own one, you can opt for an expansion card as they are expected to get more affordable with rising competition among Seagate and Western Digital.

Is Xbox Series S 1TB worth buying?

The Xbox Series S is targeted at first-time and casual gamers. Hence, it was originally released with low storage. But with feedback from the market, Microsoft has now introduced a 1TB variant.

New-gen AAA titles weigh about 100 GB or more. Therefore, gamers who play this type of game run out of storage very quickly.

Heavy gamers are not recommended to get the Series S in the first place due to limited graphics power. But if you are a casual gamer and still switch between multiple titles, you may want more storage on your console.

Xbox Series S 1TB costs $350 or more depending on the market you live in. Whereas, the storage expansion cards start at $80. So it makes sense to buy the 1TB version as it only costs $50 more than the base 512GB model.

However, it is worth noting that the pricing varies among countries. In some regions, the Xbox Series S 1TB is priced closer to the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which is as powerful as the more expensive Xbox Series X.

But you buy a console for its games and community. Perhaps your requirements are met by Xbox and you need more storage but don’t want to spend much on Series X. If you are one of those, you should consider buying the Xbox Series S 1TB.
