Guangdong’s Bold $1.5 Billion Strategy Showcases China’s Quest for Chip Independence

In a strategic move to bolster its semiconductor industry, China’s Guangdong province has recently established an impressive $1.5 billion chip fund. This initiative marks a significant step in China’s journey towards semiconductor self-reliance, a goal that has gained urgency in light of the escalating export restrictions from the US.

The Chip fund is intended to support the developing semiconductor industry

The Guangdong Semiconductor and Integrated Circuit Industry Equity Investment Fund, now in its second phase, reflects China‘s determination to support its chip industry amid international pressures. With Guangdong’s provincial government and two municipal government funds at the helm, this endeavor is a clear signal of China’s commitment to technological independence.

China chip

This move is not isolated. Similar efforts are underway across China, including Shanghai‘s semiconductor investment fund established in 2016. These regional strategies align with Beijing’s broader goals, underscoring a national consensus on the importance of the semiconductor sector.

Interestingly, the US has adopted a similar strategy with its 2022 Chips and Science Act, demonstrating a global recognition of the strategic importance of the semiconductor industry. The act promises subsidies for chip projects, indicating a global race towards semiconductor prowess.

The Guangdong fund follows its successful first phase initiated in December 2020. The current phase is primarily financed by Guangdong Yuecai Holdings, highlighting the role of local government in driving technological advances. The fund is a local counterpart to China’s National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, also known as the Big Fund, which has been pivotal in the country’s semiconductor progress despite challenges.

China’s approach to semiconductor development is comprehensive, involving both state and private sectors. This “whole-nation” strategy is not just about advancing technology; it’s a response to intensified US trade sanctions. Recent US export control rules have only added urgency to China’s endeavors. The path to self-reliance in semiconductors is not short, but China is showing determination. As the industry evolves, the implications of these developments on global technology and trade dynamics will be profound and far-reaching.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS: A Leap Forward in Electric Vehicle Range

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS is setting new standards in driving range and efficiency. With the latest EPA ratings, this luxury electric sedan promises to deliver more miles on a single charge, marking a significant step forward for the brand and for EV enthusiasts.

The 2024 AMG EQS has over 6% lower energy consumption

The new lineup includes the EQS 450+, the EQS 450 4Matic, and the EQS 580 4Matic, each offering a blend of luxury and performance. The standout model is the EQS 450+, boasting an impressive EPA combined range of 352 miles, slightly edging out its predecessors. Meanwhile, the EQS 450 4Matic and EQS 580 4Matic each offer 345 miles, a modest yet noteworthy improvement.

Mercedes

However, it’s the performance-oriented AMG EQS 4Matic+ that truly shines with its 10% range increase, jumping from 277 to 305 miles. This improvement isn’t just about longer drives; it’s a testament to Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to advancing electric mobility without compromising on performance or luxury.

What’s behind these gains? It’s not just about bigger batteries. The 2024 AMG EQS shows over 6% lower total energy consumption, suggesting enhancements in efficiency and perhaps a smarter use of its powertrain.

Interestingly, the pricing of these models remains a mystery. The 2023 lineup, with its six-figure price tags, positions these vehicles as premium choices in the EV market. It’s also notable that these models don’t qualify for federal tax credits due to their import status and price, a factor that might influence potential buyers.

Apple May Introduce MagSafe Charging On The Next-Generation iPad Pro

As per multiple reports in the past, next-year’s iPads are set to get a major refresh. Apple is expected to launch new models in early 2024. Now, a new report has shed an interesting light on the charging technology of the next-generation iPad Pros. The information comes from MacRumors citing a source familiar with companies that manufacture magnets for Apple products. The company’s flagship tablets are tipped to get support for wireless charging.

Next-generation iPad Pro may feature MagSafe charging

Over the last few years, Apple has been working on making features universal across its product portfolio. These include its propreitary silicon processors on Macs and iPads, MagSafe charging, and the USB-C port on all devices across categories. As per a previous report, the Cupertino-based tech giant is also planning to transition to OLED displays on the iPad and MacBooks by 2027.

MacRumors reports that Apple could introduce MagSafe wireless charging on the iPad Pros next year. The current tablets sport a metal unibody making them incompatible with wireless chargers. A glass or plastic back panel is required to support the charging technology. Previously, Bloomberg’s reliable Mark Gurman had revealed that the Cupertino-based tech giant was planning glass back for the 2022 iPad Pro but it did not materialize.

Cut to today, previous reports hint at Apple refreshing its entire iPad lineup with the Pro models getting significant upgrades next year. The iPad Pro in 2024 is speculated to boast OLED display panel, M3 chipsets, and an entirely new design. Notably, Apple hasn’t updated the design of its flagship tablets in several years. It remains to be seen what new design the company will adopt for its next-generation iPad Pro.

A glass back panel would allow the iPad Pro to be compatible with wireless accessories as well as the MagSafe charger. This would also eliminate the need for different chargers required for owners of Apple devices and users could get out more of their existing MagSafe charging pads. MacRumors also adds that the MagSafe charging for the next year’s iPad Pro they’re hearing about may be similar to Apple’s wired charging solution for Macs rather than iPhone’s magnetic charging tech.
