OPPO Reno5 series global launch could be in December, key details emerge

OPPO will be announcing the Reno5 series in China in the coming month. The lineup reportedly includes three handsets such as the Reno5, Reno5 Pro, and Reno5 Pro+. These monikers are not official yet. A tipster has claimed that the global launch of the Reno5 series is also nearing. He also shared key details of the global editions of the Reno5 models.

Leakster Chun has claimed that the Reno5 series will go official earlier than expected in December or January. The Reno5 will be available in 4G and 5G versions. The 4G model will have the Snapdragon 720G along with 1st generation SuperVOOC 50W, whereas the 5G edition will be driven by the Snapdragon 765G and it will support 2nd generation SuperVOOC 65W.

The leak further reveals that the Reno5 Pro and Reno5 Pro+ will not be available in the 4G version in the global markets. While the Chinese edition of the Reno5 Pro is expected to arrive with Dimensity 1000+, its global variant will have the Snapdragon 765G SoC.

OPPO PDSM00, PDST00 Reno5 Pro TENAA
Alleged Reno5 Pro a TENAA

The OPPO Reno5 Pro+ will be a flagship phone featuring the unannounced Snapdragon 870 (or 865 Ultra) chipset. It will borrow the Sony IMX689 48-megapixel sensor that was made available on the Find X2 and OnePlus 8 Pro. The Reno5 Pro+ will remain exclusive to the Chinese markets.

The tipster added that the reason why OPPO is aiming for an early global release is that it wants to increase the sales of the Reno5 series during the upcoming Lunar New Year in many Southeast Asian countries. It appears that Samsung had also applied the same strategy last year when it introduced the Galaxy A71 and Galaxy A51v phones in December.

According to the tipster, the Reno5 series is not a major upgrade over the Reno4 series since both have almost the same design language and specifications.  Instead of a dual selfie camera found on the Reno4, the Reno5 has a single camera hole for 44-megapixel selfie snapper. Also, the main rear camera on the Reno5 will be upgraded to 64-megapixel.

Google Nest Hub gets a $40 discount; now $49.99

Although smart displays are not as popular as smart speakers, there a handful made by big-name manufacturers such as Google. The Nest Hub is one of two smart displays from Google and it has received a significant cut in price, making it a great choice for anyone who plans to pick up their very first smart display.

Google Nest Hub

The Nest Hub which originally launched as the Google Home Hub in 2018 can now be purchased from the official Google Store and on eBay for just $49.99, a discount of $40 off its current price and one-third of its launch price of $149.

The smart display has a 7-inch touchscreen that not only displays your routine but will also provide virtual answers to your Google Assistant queries, unlike a smart speaker which lacks a display. What’s more, it also has YouTube, so you can watch the steps to take for that new recipe you want to try out. It also has support for Netflix, a feature that wasn’t originally available at launch.

When not answering your questions or serving as a hub that allows you to control your other smart home devices, the Nest Hub can serve as a digital photo frame that shows the best of your memories from Google Photos.

At $49.99, the Nest Hub seems like a no-brainer. We will also recommend it over the Lenovo Smart Clock which is currently discounted to $34.99 but has a smaller 4-inch screen and doesn’t support Netflix.

You can grab the Nest Hub on the Google Store for $49.99 in Chalk, Charcoal, Aqua, and Sand. It is available on eBay for the same price but only in Chalk.

Huawei lost most of its shares in Western Europe in Q3 but it’s to Xiaomi & OPPO’s gain – IDC

The latest market research data for the third quarter of 2020 (Q3) has been released by Europe. Of particular interest is the performance in Western Europe where the COVID-19 induced lockdown shut some of the most-virile economies. While the smartphone industry took a hit, this latest data suggests that some brands are already back on their feet.

Samsung retains its number one spot despite seeing its shipment drop from 11million units in Q3 2019 to 10.3 million in Q3 2020. This gives Samsung a cool 3.6% share of the market. Apple came in at second with 8.2 million shipments which represents a 28.5% share of the market.

While Xiaomi is in third space, it is surprising to note Huawwei’sslip to 4th spot with just 2.5 million shipments the entire quarter. This is a crazy 58.7% drop in the Chinese market leader’s YoY performance. Also, it is a clear indication of how US sanctions have hit the company. Huawei’s loss is Xiaomi’s gain, though, as the company shipped 3.7 million smartphones in Q3 2020. This represents a 151% YoY growth considering that the brand shipped just 1.5 million smartphones and controlled a 4.8% market share a year ago.

OPPO is yet another winner from Huawei’s woes as its shipment grew from 0.1 million in Q3 2019 to 0.9 million this year’s Q3. This represents a 566.2% Year-on-Year growth.

On the whole, a total of 28.8 million smartphones were shipped across Western Europe in the third quarter. The current quarter may also take a hit as a result of the second wave of lockdowns in Western European markets like the UK, Spain, and France. (source)

Electronics sold in France, starting January 2021, will have a repairability score label

Beginning January 2021, electronic devices including smartphones, tablets, TVs, and computers will now have a repairability score label. The label which will be compulsory for all devices sold in the European country is the result of a European Parliament vote for the Right to Repair.

According to iFixit, the vote requires the EU Commission to introduce a compulsory label that will “provide clear, visible and easy-to-understand information to consumers about the estimated lifetime and repairability of a product at the time of purchase.”.

France Repairability Index

France’s repairability index is expected to set an example for other European countries. The score on the label of an electronic, which will be rated out of 10, will take into consideration the ease of disassembly, price, and availability of spare parts, and access to repair information reports. This score will be similar to the one that iFixit has been awarding to devices for more than a decade.

The repairability score will not only force manufacturers to design products that can be easily repaired, but it will also increase competition as no manufacturer will want their product to have a low score, and it will also translate to an increase in the life span of the product.

Apparently, an EU survey carried out recently revealed that 77% of EU citizens would prefer to repair a device than replace it. With France at the forefront, other EU countries are expected to follow suit. The country also has plans to upgrade the repairability index to a durability index in 2024, so that consumers know that a product is not only easy to repair but also durable. Another goal is to extend the index to non-electronic products such as bikes and furniture.

There will also be a platform for consumers to provide feedback on the index. Citizens will be able to report false info which will lead to a sanction starting in 2022.

Vivo V21 series may launch in February in India

Vivo is gearing up to launch the Vivo V20 Pro 5G smartphone in India. Speculations have it that the handset may go official on Dec. 2 in the country. While Vivo fans are waiting for the smartphone, a new report by 91mobiles claims that the company has already started working on the Vivo V21 series. The publication claims that the company may unleash the V21 lineup in February 2020.

The Vivo V20 series includes three phones such as the Vivo V20, Vivo V20 SE, and Vivo V20 Pro. It is unclear how many phones belong to the V21 series. Based on the Vivo V20 series, the publication has speculated that the lineup may include phones like the Vivo V21, Vivo V21 SE, and Vivo V21 Pro. At present, there is no information available on the specs of the Vivo V21 series.

To recall, the Vivo V20 went official in October in India and the sales of the Vivo V20 SE began in November. The V20 Pro 5G will go on sale in December in the country. Hence, the three phones of the Vivo V21 series may not go official at the same time.

Alleged Galaxy Z Flip 3 specs say it will have a 6.9-inch 120Hz main display

The Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Flip 5G both launched this year as Samsung’s vertically folding smartphones. Next year, Samsung is expected to launch another model which will arrive as the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

If you are wondering why it is arriving as the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and not Galaxy Z Flip 2, our guess is that they want the naming to sync with that of the next Galaxy Z Fold which will launch as the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Expected to launch in the summer of 2021, some key specs of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 have now been leaked.

The source of the leak is Chun (@chunvn8888), the Vietnamese leaker, and most of the details he revealed focus on the display of the upcoming foldable phone.

According to his tweet, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 will have a 6.9-inch screen with thinner bezels and a smaller hole punch. The first-gen Galaxy Z Flip has a 6.7-inch screen and a 60Hz refresh rate but its successor will pack a slightly larger display that has a 120Hz refresh rate.

Earlier reports have stated that the next-gen Galaxy Z Flip will have a larger outer display but the exact screen size is still unknown. Chun says that the outer display will be 2 to 3 times the size of the first-gen model, which means the screen should be between 2.2 inches and 3.3 inches. Ross Young, the founder of DisplaySearch revealed earlier this month that the outer screen will be smaller than that of the Motorola Razr whose outer screen measures 2.7 inches.

Rounding off details of the display, the leak says that the phone will feature a new UTG (ultra-thin glass) and have better durability.

Another key info revealed in the leak is the battery capacity which is stated as 3900mAh. The real capacity is expected to be smaller, between 3700mAh to 3800mAh. Fans of the Flip series will appreciate the increase in battery capacity from the 3300mAh inside the Galaxy Z Flip.

There is no mention of the camera specs and RAM and storage configuration. There is also no mention of the processor. While folks expect a Snapdragon 875 processor, there is no saying that Samsung won’t surprise us and launch it with an Exynos processor in select markets. Its upcoming Exynos 2100 is said to be more powerful than Qualcomm’s flagship chipset and if Samsung is confident in its chipset, no one can stop them from putting it inside the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

While this should already be known with unverified leaks, we advise that the above details should be taken with a pinch of salt.

OPPO Reno5 Pro images and more specs now on TENAA

A pair of models alleged to be the upcoming OPPO Reno5 Pro was yesterday listed on the database of China’s telecoms regulatory agency TENAA. The listing gave us an idea of some of the key specs the device would feature but was devoid of the usual TENAA images.OPPO Reno5 Pro

TENAA has now uploaded the images of the purported Reno5 Pro 5G which actually appears under the model name OPPO PDSM00 / PDST00. We can’t clearly make out the full features of the display but it seems to have a curved edge display. The phone is likely coming with a notch-less design, perhaps a hole-punch design. OPPO Reno5 Pro

The rear aspect is fairly visible, showing that the device will feature a Quad camera setup stacked in a vertically aligned module at the back. The listing shows the camera sensors include a 64MP main sensor as well as an 8MP ultrawide camera and two 2MP sensors, likely for macro and depth photography.

The TENAA listing also shows the Reno5 Pro 5G will feature a 6.55-inch  AMOLED display with an FHD+ resolution of 2400×1080 pixels. The phone has a dimension of 159.7×73.2×7.6mm and weighs 173g. The device will also pack a 4,250mAh battery.

In other aspects, Oppo is also said to be working on three Reno5 devices which include the Reno5, Reno5 Pro and a third model which may likely be dubbed Reno5 Pro Plus. One of the models will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset while the Pro model will be powered by the Dimensity 1000+ chipset and the third is rumored to feature a Snapdragon 865 chip.

OPPO is expected to announce the Reno5 series pretty soon considering the steady influx of leaked details and rumours concerning the series.

iPhone 11 vs OnePlus 8T vs Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro: Specs Comparison

Gone are the days in which Apple would launch just one iPhone a year. The recent lineups from the Cupertino giant contain several models, including those variants for those who do not want to spend the highest amount of money possible on a phone. For example, after the release of the iPhone 12, Apple decided to keep the vanilla iPhone 11 available and it became more affordable thanks to an official price drop and street prices. But is it enough to let this phone be more attractive than Android flagship killers? This comparison between iPhone 11, OnePlus 8T, and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro will give you an idea.

Design

The iPhone 11 has a beautiful design, but that big notch makes it look a bit outdated if we compare it to Android handsets. The OnePlus 8T has a more modern look with its borderless display and punch-hole design. Further, it has a slightly lighter body. But I still prefer the iPhone 11 for a few reasons: first of all, it is the only waterproof phone of this trio. With its IP68 certification, it is dustproof and waterproof up to 2 meters deep. The iPhone 11 is built with 7000 series aluminum and it is sturdier than its rivals. Last but not least, it is a lot more compact thanks to its smaller display.

Display

The most stunning display of the trio belongs to the OnePlus 8T: it is the only one to feature an OLED panel, while iPhone 11 and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro have IPS displays. The OnePlus 8T also offers the HDR10+ certification, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro has an even higher 144 Hz refresh rate, but it has an IPS panel and that is the reason why it looks less impressive. The iPhone 11 has an IPS display as well, but it provides a very nice color reproduction and it is one of the best IPS panels out there. However, it lacks a high refresh rate just like all the other iPhones.

Hardware/Software

With all of these phones, you get amazing performances. The iPhone 11 sports an older Apple A13 Bionic chipset, but thanks to the optimization of iOS, it is incredibly fast and smooth. We can tell you the same about the OnePlus 8T and the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro, both powered by the Snapdragon 865 mobile platform. OnePlus 8T is actually superior because it provides up to 12 GB of RAM, while Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro stops at 8 GB. Further, the OnePlus 8T ships with Android 11 out of the box, while Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro is still based on Android 10.

Camera

The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro sports the best main sensor for the rear camera and it is able to provide a better photo quality with its 108 MP resolution and OIS. It also sports an ultrawide 13 MP lens and a 5 MP dedicated macro camera, as well as the support of 8K video recording. The iPhone 11 has just two cameras on the rear side, but it is still an amazing camera phone with its 12 MP sensors and a great algorithm. OnePlus 8T is a good camera phone as well with its 48 MP quad camera. However, none of these devices is among the very best camera phones out there.

Battery

The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro is actually able to offer the longest battery life thanks to its bigger 5000 mAh battery. The OnePlus 8T comes right after and it charges faster with its 65W fast charging technology. The iPhone 11 has a smaller battery but it supports wireless charging.

Price

iPhone 11 carries a €719/$599 starting price, while OnePlus 8T and Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro start from €599/$715. The OnePlus 8T is my favorite device of this comparison because of its AMOLED display, Android 11 out of the box, and faster charging. But some may prefer the iPhone 11 due to iOS, its amazing camera, compact body, and wireless charging. Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro lets you save more money because it is easy to find it for less than €500 thanks to online street prices.

Samsung halts One UI 3.0 Beta update for Galaxy Z Fold2 after encountering a major bug

In an unfortunate move, Samsung had to suspend the One UI 3.0 Beta update for the Galaxy Z Fold2. The update, which started rolling out today in South Korea, apparently locked the users on the lock screen and didn’t let them go beyond.

The issue, as reported by Tizenhelp(via Sammobile), popped up on the Samsung Community forums in South Korea soon after it rolled out. Accordingly, the new One UI 3.0 Beta update for Galaxy Z Fold2 with firmware version F916NKSU1ZTKB came with a serious bug. After updating, users tried to unlock the device with a password, fingerprint, or other method but it became useless. If you recall, Samsung had to postpone the Beta update for other devices following issues with battery and performance on the Galaxy Note 10.

Only a couple of days back, the company had resumed the One UI 3.0 Beta program starting with Galaxy Z Flip. Consequently, it became the first foldable device to get the One UI 3.0 Beta based on Android 11. While we thought Samsung must have fixed the issues on the previous instance, it seems the update for the next foldable device brings different issues.

Samsung confirmed the OneUI 3.0 based on Android 11 back at the event on August 5. The beta program began after the initial developer build. And the company is trying to hit the target right and reportedly has a vision to bring it close to 90 devices. Anyway, the public final version will likely roll out before 2020 ends.

That said, Samsung has reportedly rolled back the update before it affects a large audience. In any case, if you are someone who is living in South Korea and you have accidentally updated it, one way out is “Factory reset”. However, if you haven’t updated your foldable yet, we suggest you to avoid it and wait till Samsung fixes the issue.

In similar news, the company has reportedly started rolling out the One UI 3.0 Beta update to the yesteryear flagships like  Galaxy S10, S10+, S10e in countries like India, UK, and South Korea. To try it out, open Samsung Members App and click on the One UI banner. Then, signup for the program and then install it via Settings->Software Updates->Download and Install.

Samsung Neon is coming to smartphones sort of, as early as next month

At CES 2020, Samsung announced NEON, a product which it calls an Artificial Human. A description on the official website says it is a “computationally created virtual being that looks and behaves like us”. Now, it has been revealed that NEON will be available on smartphones before the end of the year.

The announcement was made on Twitter by Pranav Mistry, the CEO of STAR (Samsung Technology and Advanced Research) Labs. The computer scientist had shared photos of NEON Frame, the life-size immersion portal that “brings NEON into the real world”.

Then a question from Ice Universe, the popular Samsung leaker asking if NEON can be used on phones prompted the CEO to reveal that it is already available on his phone in testing and should be available before Xmas.

NEON View is the version of the virtual assistant coming to mobile devices. The assistant will be able to learn skills and form memories, and unlike current AI assistants, this one has a face and will be able to converse and show emotions like a human.

NEON View

NEON can be programmed to do a variety of things. According to details on the official website, NEON can be a teacher, a yoga instructor, a narrator, a reporter and so much more. A CNET interview early this year with Pranav Mistry said that the virtual assistant won’t be a replacement to Bixby or any other AI assistant available at the moment. It won’t come shipped with Samsung phones either even STAR Labs the business is funded by Samsung.

It is not very clear how NEON will work on devices but more details should surface when we see it make its appearance on mobile before the end of the year.

Xiaomi upbeat of its 5-year projection in India amidst a huge feature phone base

Established Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Corp chairman and CEO Lei Jun has said that the company sees the huge potential of conversion of feature phone users in India, mainly at the rural areas,  to smartphones which would boost the growth of the company in the country over the next five years.

Addressing analysts during the company’s July-September quarter earnings presentation on Tuesday, Jun said the Indian smartphone market is estimated at about 300 million units per year with about half of these being feature phones. He stressed that the company will continue on the path of innovation in carving a niche for the Indian market by producing affordable and high-performance smartphones.

Jun said Xiaomi will expand their sales network down to the countryside and villages so that consumers in these areas are equipped with mobile internet which would almost certainly bring change to their lives for the better. “This is our plan. So overall, I think…we’re very, very optimistic about the future growth for the next maybe five years,” he said.

Xiaomi chalked up a 55% growth in revenue in the third quarter this year as compared to its performance last year.

Jun said Xiaomi will aim to sustain its leading position in the smartphone segment of the Indian market which has been for more than 4 years. He said the Indian market is now equally divided between online and offline channels with each contributing an equal proportion of the sales. He thus stated that Xiaomi wants to be successful in India hence would continue its drive for hitting a previously untapped customer base.

“Right now, we have established a system to cover the major markets, including Europe, Latin America, Middle East, and Southeast Asian countries, and India,” Jun stated.

The Xiaomi chief executive said the company is seeing a global rebound in sales in Q3 in the aftermath of the adverse impact on businesses in the first half of the year due to the coronavirus pandemic. He also noted that the company experienced tough challenges in supplies due to supplier shortage.

“So we are closely monitoring the status of the pandemic in Europe, in India,” he said. The company is optimistic of a more productive 2021, with the possible rollout of vaccines for Covid-19.

Xiaomi has 20,881 full-time employees of which 19,319 (about 93%) are based in mainland China mainly in its Beijing headquarters, with India and Indonesia accounting for the rest employees (about 7%). (source)
