Samsung’s new UV Sterilizer wirelessly charges your phone while killing germs

With the on-going COVID-19 pandemic and the cases rising around the world, one of the most effective ways to prevent the infection is personal hygiene and sensitizing things and products that you come in contact with.

Spotting the opportunity, Samsung has launched a new UV sterilizer for smartphones, accessories, and electronic products. As per the company’s claim, it can kill up to 99 percent of germs and bacteria using UV-C radiation.

Samsung UV Sterilizer

The Dual UV setup in the device can eliminate pathogens and bacteria on both the sides of a device in a single go. It’s large in size, measuring 22.8 x 12.8 x 4.9cm, and thus, it can accommodate larger devices like the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Samsung says that it should thoroughly disinfect both sides of your phone in just about 10 minutes. Its functionality isn’t limited to just disinfection. The new Samsung UV Sterilizer also doubles up as a wireless charger and supports 10W charging.

It seems to be an extension of the phone sanitizing service that Samsung is already offering in about 19 countries across the world through its own Samsung Service Centers and Samsung Experience Stores.

As for the Samsung UV Sanitizer, it is currently only available for purchase in Thailand for a price of 1,590 baht, which roughly converts to $50. We expect the company to make this product available in other countries soon, but there’s no confirmation yet.

Nubia Red Magic 5G to support 120Hz frame rate for Kart Rider Rush+

Earlier this year, in March, ZTE-backed Nubia had launched its latest high-end gaming smartphone, dubbed Nubia Red Magic 5G. The phone comes with a powerful set of specifications and is among the world’s first smartphones to pack 16GB of RAM.

Now, the company has announced that the Red Magic 5G will be the first smartphone in the world to have support for the 120Hz frame rate for the KartRider Rush+ game in China. At this time, the feature seems to be limited to the Chinese market only.

Nubia Red Magic KartRider Rush+ 120Hz Support

The KartRider Rush+, a mobile kart racing game, was launched a few months ago and comes with a robust set of tracks,  diverse game modes, and countless kart customization options. Before making an international debut, the game was first launched in China.

It’s noteworthy that the Red Magic 5G isn’t the first smartphone to have support for 120Hz frame rate games but it is the first one to support KartRider Rush+ at such a high frame rate. Phones like ASUS ROG Phone 2 and Samsung Galaxy S20 also have support for several games at the 120Hz frame rate.

The Nubia Red Magic 5G features a 6.65-inch 144Hz AMOLED display and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, which is paired with up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.0 storage.

As the name suggests, the phone also supports 5G connectivity just like any other flagship smartphone released this year. Being a gaming phone, it features a striking design along with RGB light. Other features of the phone include liquid cooling with an internal fan, shoulder buttons, and WiFi 6.

In the camera department, it comes with a triple camera setup consisting of a 64MP Sony IMX686 primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide shooter, and a 2MP macro snapper. On the front side, it comes with an 8MP snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

The smartphone is running Android 10 operating system out-of-the-box with a custom user interface on top. The device is powered by a 4,500mAh battery and comes with support for 55W fast charging technology.

Huawei Mate 40 series to come with symmetrical dual speakers

As the launch of the date for the Huawei Mate 40 series flagship smartphone nears, more and more details about the phone keep surfacing online. After information about the 3D facial recognition function, we now have details about the speaker.

The latest report indicates that the upcoming Huawei Mate 40 series smartphones will come packed with symmetrical dual speakers to ensure better audio experience. This will be similar to the one offered by the Chinese company in Mate 20 series.

The Mate 20 series smartphones also had support for Dolby Atmos audio but we doubt that the upcoming Mate 40 will have Dolby Atmos because of the on-going US-China trade war. However, the symmetrical dual speakers alone should be enough to provide improved and balanced audio experience.

The development comes just a day after it was reported that the Huawei Mate 40 Pro will come with support for 3D face recognition technology that will be used to authenticate digital payments. It was also revealed that the sensors used for this tech will be placed under the punch-hole cutout on the display.

As per the reports, the Mate 40 Pro will come with a 90Hz refresh rate display and a unique screen resolution of 2640 x 1200 pixels. Under the hood, the device will be powered by the next-generation Kirin chipset which could be manufactured using the 5nm process by TSMC, possibly Kirin 1000.

The highlight of the Mate series smartphones has been the awesome camera features and we expect the same from Huawei for the upcoming Mate 40 series. But to know what exactly the company has up its sleeves for the flagship smartphone, we’ll have to wait for the official launch announcement.

While the company has not yet revealed anything related to the smartphone and its launch date, some reports have indicated that Huawei is likely to launch this flagship lineup somewhere around September or October this year.

LG’s rollable display smartphone with codename “Project B” to launch early next year

Last year, foldable smartphones became a reality and while companies like Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola have already launched their own foldable smartphone in the market, other companies are yet to commercially launch their foldable phones, even though they are working on such technology.

However, it seems that LG is going a step forward and is gearing up to launch a smartphone with a rollable display. As per the report coming from Korea, this project is codenamed as “Project B”. A patent for a similar smartphone was published last year.

LG Rollable Display
LG Rollable Display Smartphone Patent

As per the report, LG has already begun working on a prototype of this rollable display smartphone and is expected to launch the smartphone early next year. The phone will have display rolling out from the sides and the company will be using Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) to achieve this.

To make this a reality, LG Electronics is working with China-based display maker BOE for the flexible OLED panel. While the rollable display isn’t difficult compared to the foldable display, the difficulty arises in ensuring that the design and other materials and components on the device support this new display technology.

Apart from this Project B rollable display smartphone, the South Korean company is working on a few more smartphones. In the second half of this year, LG will be launching a flagship smartphone codenamed “Horizontal”.

Next year, the company will be launching a smartphone which is codenamed “Rainbow”. However, it’s not yet known what makes these upcoming flagship smartphones from the company interesting.

Recently, the company launched the LG Velvet smartphone which comes with a revamped design. It features a 6.9-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2460 x 1080 pixels and a 20.5:9 aspect ratio. The phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G mobile platform which brings 5G support with its built-in modem.

It packs 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage that can be expanded to up to 2TB via microSD card slot. There’s a triple camera setup on the back that consists of a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor. On the front side, there’s a 16MP snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

The LG Velvet runs the latest Android 10 operating system and comes powered by a 4,300mAh battery with 25W fast charging support. The company is also rumored to soon launch a 4G-only variant of the smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 & Note 20+ (Ultra) cases & screen protectors leak

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra official renders were accidentally shared by Samsung Russia showing the rear design upon a mystic bronze paint job. But before then, prolific tipster Ice Universe had shared pictures of the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20+ cases. The cases were taken from an angle that gives a vivid indication of the size of both models.Samsung Galaxy Note 20

The pictures also show the camera bumps of both models with that of the Note20+ clearly larger, suggesting it will use the S20 Ultra’s camera or a higher version of it. A 108MP sensor is rumoured to be included, although the periscope cam digital zoom will go up to 50x.

There are other differences between both models, the Note20+ will have a curved 1440p+ display with a refresh rate of 120Hz, while the Note20 will have a flat 1080p+ screen with 60Hz refresh rate.

Also for the Galaxy Note20+ are two different screen protectors, with thinner bezels compared to that of the Galaxy Note10+. Presumably, it will be thinner than the Note20 bezel.Samsung Galaxy Note 20

Other news about the Samsung’s flagship series as released by Ice Universe, shows the Galaxy Note20+ (which might probably be called Note20 ultra), will come with a copper colour option with a slight pinkish tint. The most important is the glass that will be frosted, suggesting that the other colours will, like the current model, have a glossy finish.

Design

When it comes to the look, my favorite device of this comparison is the Redmi 9A. Unfortunately, it lacks a fingerprint reader, but it has a cleaner back and a compact camera module, unlike the Honor 9A. But some may prefer the Samsung Galaxy M01 due to its more compact size, given its smaller display. It has a lower screen-to-body ratio, but it is the most compact entry-level here. The color variants of the Honor 9A are awesome, but I do not like its bigger camera module. On the other hand, it is the only to offer a fingerprint reader, which is rear-mounted. The handset is even more compact than the Redmi 9A but bigger than the Samsung Galaxy M01.

Display

Samsung Galaxy M01 has the most compact display and it is easier to use with one hand and to keep in a pocket, but its PLS TFT display is inferior to the panels found on the Redmi 9A and Honor 9A. Not that its rivals come with amazing panels: they got below-average displays with a just acceptable HD+ resolution, but at least they are IPS panel. And they also offer a wider diagonal. If you want a higher display quality, you should go either for the Redmi 9A or the Honor 9A without thinking twice.

Specs & Software

The Helio G25 chipset is actually the most powerful of the trio and it offers higher CPU and GPU performance. Despite it is an entry-level SoC, it is meant for gamers thanks to its good GPU and HyperEngine technology by MediaTek. But while the Helio G25 is a better chipset, some may prefer the Samsung Galaxy M01 because it offers a Qualcomm’s SoC and 3 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB. It became extremely hard to find a Qualcomm’s chipset in the lowest price segment, but Samsung Galaxy M01 is fueled by the Snapdragon 439 which is Qualcomm’s entry-level offering. With its Helio P22, Honor 9A comes with the weakest hardware department, but it has more internal storage: 64 GB instead of 32 GB. However, in each case, you can expand the internal storage with a micro SD.

Camera

Honor 9A is the most advanced camera phone because it has a better main sensor with a brighter focal aperture, so it is able to shoot better photos in more light conditions. It is also a better camera phone because it is the only one with an ultrawide sensor. It is a low-end 5 MP lens, but better than nothing. The ultrawide sensor is paired with a depth sensor sporting a 2 MP resolution, while Samsung Galaxy M01 has just a main sensor and a depth sensor. Redmi 9A comes with just a single 13 MP sensor, so it is not the best choice for photography. Honor 9A also wins the selfie comparison thanks to its 8 MP front camera.

Battery

The huge 5000 mAh batteries found on the Redmi 9A and the Honor 9A will allow them to last a lot more than Samsung Galaxy M01 on a single charge. It is hard to say which one between Redmi 9A and Honor 9A will last more, we had no chance to test the battery life of the Redmi 9A and this comparison is only based on the specs on the paper. Samsung Galaxy M01 still delivers a very long battery life, so you may opt for this device if you want a faster battery charging since none of these handsets features a fast charging technology.

Price

Redmi 9A is priced just €75/$84, Honor 9A costs €114/$128, and Samsung Galaxy M01 has a €106/$119 price tag. There is not a definitive winner of this comparison: the Redmi 9A offers the highest performance and amazing battery life but a more disappointing camera department. Honor 9A has the best cameras and great battery life, but it lacks a great hardware side. Samsung Galaxy M01 sits right in the middle with decent hardware and cameras, but with a smaller battery and an inferior display.

Carl Pei explains meaning behind “Nord” name

More details have been pouring in with respect to the upcoming OnePlus Nord. Earlier today, Qualcomm revealed the phone is powered by a Snapdragon 765G processor.

For its first mid-range phone in years, OnePlus is going with a name rather than a number or even an alphabet. There have been speculations about what the name Nord means. You don’t have to wonder anymore as OnePlus’s CEO Carl Pei has explained the meaning behind the name.

OnePlus Nord

In an Instagram post, the company executive said the name comes from the “concept of true north”. He goes on to explain that we all have an inner compass that guides us. And then concludes by saying the new product line is a reminder for them to always search for their true north.

The OnePlus Nord is the first of an affordable line of smartphones from the Chinese manufacturer. It will be priced under $500 and will have support for 5G. Other features are dual selfie cameras, 30W fast charging, and an AMOLED display with a high refresh rate.
