QR Codes are increasingly being replaced by Face Scans for payments in China

China is among those few countries that have widely adopted the mobile payments system, making the system quite easy to use compared to the traditional ways. The popularity of mobile payments in China was driven by the use of QR codes, making the process super easy as the user just need to scan the code to make payments.

But now, since the QR codes are gaining more popularity outside China, the tech giants in the Chinese market are moving towards a newer system for mobile payments — facial recognition. Companies like Ant Financials, an arm of Alibaba and WeChat backed by Tencent, have already started using facial recognition.

Alibaba’s Facial Recognition System for Payments
Alibaba’s Facial Recognition System for Payments

The facial recognition-based payments system provides more ease and security as well as portability compared to the QR codes method. Also, the use of this new method could further boost the usage of mobile payments as it has the potential to bring a new wave of less tech-savvy users, such as the elderly.

Alipay first rolled out its Dragonfly facial recognition system, which is an upgrade of its Smile-to-Pay system, in December last year. Since then, the company has expanded it to over 300 cities in China.

Following its footsteps, rival WeChat Pay also started offering its device to merchants around three months later. The device is capable of scanning both a customer’s face as well as QR codes for payment. However, the company has not shared statistics.

The adaptation of this new system of facial recognition has made the shopping experience a breeze. During checkout, all the user needs to do is choose facial recognition to pay and look at the tablet’s camera. Once authorized, the amount will be deducted from the user’s account. Now, the user doesn’t need to take out the phone and scan the QR code and then proceed with the steps to make payment.

This is also leading to less reliance on cashiers. For instance, Alipay is now offering solutions such as vending machines and self-checkout machines that both use face-scans to process payments.

Alibaba’s Facial Recognition System for Payments

The battle for the mobile payments market share in China is majorly between two giants — WeChat Pay and Alipay. As per the reports, both the companies jointly accounted for over 90 percent of China’s mobile payments last year. Both are almost equal when it comes to ticket size, with WeChat Pay accounting for 45 percent of total transaction amounts and Alipay for 46 percent, reveals market research firm Ipsos.

There are currently about 583 million users who are using mobile payments technology. With over 562 million Chinese still remain to get connected to the internet, the market has a lot of room to grow.

Redmi Smartphones Price Cut

While we know that this new pricing will be applicable from 1st August in China, it is not yet known how long will this pricing be applicable. Vivo patents two new designs for dual display phones

At the end of the of year 2018, Vivo had launched the Vivo NEX Dual Display smartphone with flagship specs. As the name suggests, it came with an additional display on its rear. LetsGoDigital has come across a patent filing from September 2018 for two dual display smartphones. The patent that was filed with World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) has been approved now.

As it can be seen in the below images, the model A and B are two different designs for Vivo phones with dual displays. Like the Vivo NEX Dual Display smartphone, the model A and B are both equipped with full-screen display on the front. However, they are equipped with different rear designs.

The model A features an RGB-lit O-ring LED like the Lunar Ring selfie softlight LED found on the NEX Dual Display phone. The Lunar Ring is placed towards the upper-left of the second screen. Its half portion is embedded in the display.  The NEX Dual Display has the Lunar Ring at the center position.

The model B has a smaller oval shaped LED ring that is placed towards the top-right of the second display. The camera sensors appear to be placed inside the ring.

Like the NEX Dual Display phone, the model A and B dual display phone designs do not feature front-facing cameras. The notch-less design on the front will allow both phones to offer an extremely high screen-to-body ratio. The front display on both models could be equipped with an in-screen fingerprint reader.

The slim-sized top bezel of the phone features an earpiece. A power button and a volume rocker are available on the left spine of these devices. There seems to be another volume rocker on the right edge of these devices.

Vivo NEX Dual Display

Probably, the successor of the Vivo NEX Dual Display could be sporting any of the above shown design. Recently, Vivo had trademarked VivoX moniker with European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Probably, the next dual display phone from Vivo could be made available in the market as a VivoX phone.

Leaked photo confirms Galaxy Tab S6 has an in-display fingerprint scanner

Samsung will announce the Galaxy Tab S6 later today but hours before the unveiling, a leak has surfaced which confirms a key detail about the tablet.

The Galaxy Tab S6 will not only be the first Samsung tablet with dual rear cameras but will also be the world’s first tablet with an in-display fingerprint scanner. An image of the tablet shared on Twitter by Evan Blass is the source of this info.

Galaxy Tab S6 In-display fingerprint scanner

There had actually been reports that the Galaxy Tab S6 will be the first tablet with a fingerprint scanner under its display just like a lot of phones have these days. However, none of the leaked press renders confirmed that the device actually has it.

The Galaxy Tab S6′ predecessor, the Galaxy Tab S4, doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner but an Iris Scanner, while the Galaxy Tab S5e has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The confirmation of an in-display fingerprint scanner should be good news for owners of the Galaxy Tab S3 who didn’t upgrade last year. The Tab S3 has a front-mounted fingerprint scanner that sits below the display under the physical home button. So switching to the Galaxy Tab S6 should be easy since the in-display fingerprint scanner is technically front-mounted.

The Galaxy Tab S6 will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 processor paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of expandable storage. It will have a 10.5-inch AMOLED display, an 8MP front-facing camera, a 13MP + 5MP dual rear camera combo, and a 7040mAh battery with support for fast charging. The Galaxy Tab S6 will have a Bluetooth S Pen that attaches to the back of the device. There will also be connector pins at the bottom of the device for connecting it to a keyboard.
