Huawei unveils HarmonyOS NEXT, ditches Android apps entirely

Huawei‘s annual developer conference, HDC 2024, was the stage for the company’s biggest announcement yet: the official launch of HarmonyOS NEXT, the next iteration of its homegrown operating system.

The announcement comes after years of development for HarmonyOS, natively called Hongmeng on the mainland. The China-developed OS ditches the Linux kernel and Android Open Source Project (AOSP) codebase entirely in favor of a fully independent architecture built around Huawei’s Hongmeng kernel and system.

As the OS is made from the ground up, Huawei claims the new system architecture delivers a 30% improvement in overall machine performance and a 20% reduction in power consumption.

Currently in beta testing, HarmonyOS NEXT is looking for developers and a limited number of pioneer users (3,000) to participate. Those interested should be aware that the beta version may not be stable and could lead to data incompatibility issues.

One System for All Devices

A core feature of HarmonyOS NEXT is its ability to bridge the gap between different devices. According to Huawei, developers only need to create one version of an app to ensure a consistent user experience across various screen sizes within the Huawei ecosystem. This was demonstrated at the conference with popular apps like Taobao, Yiche, and Bilibili running seamlessly on different devices.

Furthermore, HarmonyOS NEXT boasts a unique “App Continuation” function. Imagine starting a video call on your tablet and seamlessly transferring it to your phone with a single click. The system also allows for effortless data sharing between devices. For example, you can easily cut and paste an image from your phone to your tablet while working on a document.

Harmony Intelligence: AI Built-in

HarmonyOS NEXT goes beyond just device connectivity. It integrates artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities directly into the system, coined as “Harmony Intelligence.”

The integration unlocks a range of features, including:

  • AIGC image generation: Create unique images from line drawings, coloring existing photos, or even enlarging them.
  • Industry-first AI sound repair: This feature aims to assist people with speech disorders by enhancing communication.
  • “Xiaoyi Sees the World” for visually impaired users: This feature uses AI to “read pictures” by describing their content aloud, potentially helping users identify objects in their surroundings.
  • AI-powered controls: HarmonyOS NEXT allows third-party apps to leverage the system’s AI for features like real-time text reading, smart form filling, and image/text translation.

Xiaoyi Gets Smarter

Huawei’s virtual assistant, Xiaoyi, has received an upgrade with HarmonyOS NEXT. Now known as “Xiaoyi Intelligent Agent,” it leverages the power of Pangu Big Model 5.0. Xiaoyi no longer requires a wake word and can be “summoned” by simply dragging and dropping content onto the navigation bar. This allows for a more intuitive interaction where Xiaoyi can analyze the content and offer relevant actions, like generating a chart from an image or summarizing a document.

Security First with Star Shield

Security remains a top priority for Huawei. HarmonyOS NEXT introduces the new Star Shield security architecture, designed to keep user data safe. This architecture implements several measures:

  • Strict app vetting: Codes and apps that don’t meet security standards are blocked from being installed.
  • Multi-device data encryption: Data is encrypted end-to-end across various devices for enhanced protection.
  • Hardware-level encryption: Individual files are encrypted with unique keys stored on the device’s hardware.
  • Permission control: Unnecessary app permissions are restricted to minimize privacy risks.

The Road Ahead

HarmonyOS NEXT is still under development, with the commercial launch expected in Q4 2024. The beta testing phase has begun, and Huawei is actively seeking developers and early adopters to provide feedback and help refine the system.

Vivo X200 Pro design, specs leak reveals ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, larger battery, and more

MediaTek is expected to unveil the Dimensity 9400, its next-generation flagship chip, in October of this year. In the same month, Vivo may unveil the Vivo X200 series of smartphones equipped with the D9400. Tipster Digital Chat Station is gradually spilling details about the X200 series. In a Weibo post released today, DCS revealed a few key details about what appears to be the X200 Pro.

Vivo X200 Pro design details (rumored)

DCS’ leak suggests that the Vivo X200 Pro will feature significant upgrades and new technologies as compared to the Vivo X100 Pro, which debuted last year in November. He revealed that the Vivo X200 Pro flagship has an impressive screen design, featuring a 1.5K resolution, uniformly narrow bezels on all four sides, and a slightly curved display. In the comments section, DCS said that the screen size could be 6.7 or 6.8 inches.

He mentioned that the X200 Pro also includes a single-point ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor and introduces a new silicon battery configuration. The Vivo X100 Pro packs a 5,400mAh battery. It remains to be seen whether the successor model will arrive with a 6,000mAh battery.

DCS added that it will come with an updated triple-camera system, including a periscope lens for enhanced imaging capabilities. It could potentially feature three 50-megapixel cameras on its back.

The 3nm Dimensity 9400 chipset, rumored to include the Cortex-X5 super core, will power the Vivo X200 Pro and X200. Expected to deliver superior performance with reduced power consumption, the new chip will compete with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 phones set to launch in China between October and December.

Realme V60 and V60s surfaces in promo material and TENAA listing

Realme seems to be preparing to launch two new phones under V-series in China. Dubbed the Realme V60 and V60s, the smartphones have surfaced in promo material and TENAA listing confirming the specs and design. And interestingly, both models seem identical in every aspect.

While we’re not sure why Realme is launching two near-identical phones with exact same features and design, the specs reveal they are a budget-centric device.

Both the V60 and V60s have a 6.67-inch LCD display with a standard 720×1604 resolution. Powering the device is the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 SoC, a mid-range processor.

In terms of cameras, the V60 series features a single 32MP rear sensor and an 8MP front-facing camera for selfies. This minimalist approach also extends to charging, with the phone capped at a rather slow 10W wired charging.

However, the phones do offer some redeeming qualities. The display features a smooth 120Hz refresh rate for a more fluid user experience. Additionally, the phone boasts a 5,000mAh battery, which should provide decent battery life. The phone also comes with IP64 dust and water resistance, offering some protection from the elements.

Storage and RAM options appear varied, with the V60 series offering configurations ranging from 4GB to 12GB of RAM and 64GB to 512GB of storage. The phone’s dimensions are listed as 165.6 x 76.1 x 7.94 mm, and it weighs in at 192g.

There is no official word yet on the launch date and availability of the V60 series. The last V-line phone from Realme was likely the V50s, a budget offering that did not make it to the global market. No surprises though since Realme’s V-series has always been exclusive to China since its inception. So it’s unlikely we will see these new V60 series devices in the global market.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim to launch in October, will be called Samsung W25 in China

Samsung has a Galaxy Unpacked event planned for July 10, 2024, where the brand will likely launch its next-generation foldable smartphones like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, alongside the Galaxy Watch 7 and new Galaxy Buds. Rumors have been going around that Samsung has another foldable up its sleeve called the Galaxy Z Fold Slim. Tipster Ice Universe has now shed more light on this upcoming smartphone.

Samsung W24

As per Ice Universe, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim will be a lighter and thinner version of the Z Fold 6 smartphone, without support for the SPen. This device will debut in China as the Samsung W25. The tipster also adds that this device will be released in October, although he does not mention whether it be as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim or the Samsung W25.

Samsung W24 & W24 Flip

For those unaware, the Samsung W series smartphones are a China-exclusive series of devices. Samsung collaborates with China Telecom to launch these premium rebranded versions of its latest Galaxy Z series devices. The funds raised from the sales of the Samsung W series devices go towards charitable causes. Last year, the brand launched the Samsung W24 and W24 Flip, essentially rebranded Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 smartphones with a luxurious look.

Coming back to the Galaxy Fold 6 Slim, the drive was previously spotted with model numbers SM-F958N and SM-W9025, going by “Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra“. The former is meant for the South Korean market, while the latter belongs to the Chinese model. It is currently unclear if Samsung intends to launch the smartphone outside of these two regions.

Moto S50 Neo to be world’s first phone with 4-year warranty

Lenovo will introduce a couple of new Motorola phones at a new product launch conference in China on June 25. The brand has already confirmed that it will unveil the Razr 50, the Razr 50 Ultra, and the Moto S50 Neo. By rolling out the following post, the company confirmed that the S50 Neo will arrive with a 4-year warranty.

Moto S50 Neo to arrive with a 4-year warranty

Remarkably, the Moto S50 Neo will be the world’s first smartphone to offer a 4-year warranty. According to the fine print on the promotional poster, this warranty includes a standard 1-year warranty and a complimentary 3-year extended warranty.

Previously, some models from Xiaomi, OnePlus, Lenovo, and others have offered 2-year warranties, with Meizu’s 20 and 21 series providing 3-year warranties during special promotions. However, the Motorola S50 Neo sets a new industry benchmark with its 4-year warranty.

The specific details on how to avail the extended warranty for the Moto S50 Neo are yet to be disclosed by the company. This extensive warranty aims to alleviate consumer concerns by addressing any issues within the 4-year period, thereby providing a worry-free experience for users. According to reports, the global market will rebrand the S50 Neo as the Moto G85 5G. It is unlikely that the G85 will arrive with a 4-year warranty.
