You Will Have To Wait Till Next Year For Apple Intelligence Features But For Several Good Reasons

Apple announced AI features called Apple Intelligence last week at the annual WWDC. They will be integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia on iPhones, iPads, and Macs respectively. While the newly announced software version will be released for the public later this year, it’s common to expect them loaded with Apple Intelligence features. However, that won’t be the case. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that you will need to wait longer as the rollout will be slow and stretch into 2025.

Apple Intelligence’s rollout will be slow

Apple-Intelligence
Apple Intelligence

Gurman reports that Apple will roll out the new Intelligence features in a phased manner spanning across months. The Cupertino-based tech giant wants to avoid the difficulties that other AI systems have faced. The company traditionally rolls out features announced at WWDC in September when the new iPhones go on sale. This time, Apple has revealed that the latest AI technology won’t follow a strict timeline. At the recent keynote, the company just gave a roadmap of what’s arriving later this year and early next year.

Gurman notes that the delayed arrival of Apple Intelligence is better in several ways. It will help the company in managing its resources by not overwhelming its staff in getting out all features done at once. Apple will only focus on American English so that it has more time to train its AI models in other languages although it may take years. The Cupertino-based tech giant will be taking its time to strengthen its cloud infrastructure. This will help mitigate the risk of servers crashing due to too much user load. Apple is also said to work on fixing the nonsensical information delivered by AI services by starting with a small user base.

Citing employees involved in Apple Intelligence’s development, a subset of the service’s features won’t be available until next year. These include the upgraded Siri assistant features that stole the show at WWDC including finding things based on context, on-screen awareness features, and more. The ChatGPT integration will also arrive in 2025. But on the bright side, the initial version of Apple Intelligence will still pack features like prioritizing notifications, summarising webpages, writing tools, image generation, and Genmoji.

Gurman also notes that non-AI features including changes to the Mail app, the ability to edit spatial video, and more won’t arrive with the initial software version updates.

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra vs Xiaomi 14 Civi: A Flagship Killer Comparison

The Xiaomi 14 Civi just launched in India last week. We have already compared it to the Vivo V30 Pro and the OnePlus 12R. Earlier today (18th June 2024), the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra was announced in the region. So let’s see how it stacks up in this flagship killer comparison.

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra vs Xiaomi 14 CIVI
Motorola Edge 50 Ultra (L) vs Xiaomi 14 Civi (R)

1. Motorola Edge 50 Ultra vs Xiaomi 14 Civi: Moto’s Smartphone made out of wood

Vegan leather has been the recent trend in the materials used in smartphones. Both the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra and the Xiaomi 14 Civi come with such an option. But while there’s a glass variant as well on the Chinese phone, Motorola is offering a unique wooden back as well. This is real wood that is being used and also gives off a pleasant fragrance.

The two models also offer an aluminum frame on the side. But that’s not all, the Edge 50 Ultra comes with an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s new flagship killer doesn’t have an official rating. There are likely some measures in place, but the lack of an IP rating could be to save on cost.

2. Taller display vs brighter display

Moving to the front, we get an OLED screen on both models. However, the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra sports a taller 6.7-inch panel compared to the 6.55-inch screen on the Xiaomi 14 Civi. But the latter also has a higher 3,000 nits of peak brightness, which is higher than Motorola’s 2,500 nits peak. But the Edge 50 Ultra swings back with a higher 144Hz refresh rate over the 120Hz on the Xiaomi model. Both devices offer 1.5K resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection (Victus 2 on the Civi), and HDR10+.

3. Similar performance, but Moto charges faster

Regardless of which smartphone you choose, you can expect high-end performance on both. The duo are equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC that is a chip made for budget flagships. Under the hood, the Edge 50 Ultra is powered by a 4,500mAh battery pack that supports 125W wired fast charging, 50W wireless fast charging, and 10W reverse charging. The Xiaomi 14 Civi manages to offer a slightly large 4,700mAh battery pack but only offers wired fast charging up to 67W.

4. Camera: It’s a close one

It is hard to definitively state which smartphone has the better camera setup. Both offer an edge in some situations, at least on paper. Motorola is offering a 50-megapixel main sensor (supports Optical Image Stabilization) paired with a 64-megapixel periscope telephoto shooter (3x Optical Zoom), and a 50-megapixel ultra wide angle lens on the rear. The front houses a 50-megapixel selfie camera.

On the Xiaomi 14 Civi, you get three cameras again but the primary and telephoto both are 50-megapixel sensors. The telephoto lens only offers 2x optical zoom and the third camera is a 12-megapixel ultra wide angle lens. This might seem a bit lackluster compared to the Edge 50 Ultra, but the selfie camera has always been a selling point of the Civi series in China. The device houses a dual camera setup with a 32-megapixel wide and another 32-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens on the front.

5. Pricing & Verdict

Pricing is a major factor when buying a smartphone. Both of these models fall into similar categories but have a noticeable difference in pricing. The Xiaomi 14 Civi starts from 39,999 INR in India and the Edge 50 Ultra costs 59,999 INR. But it is worth noting that the Motorola model only comes in a 12GB + 512GB option. Although, Xiaomi’s 12GB + 512GB version also costs 44,999 INR, which is still cheaper.

If you want a refreshing new device with a wooden panel, fast charging, and wireless charging support, the Motorola device is clearly for you. But if you’re on a strict budget and just want the flagship hardware without breaking the bank, Xiaomi’s 14 Civi is a sweet deal, especially with bank discounts. The Edge 50 Ultra can be purchased for as low as 49,999 INR with bank discounts and launch offers, so check it out ASAP!

Huawei considers charging developers 20% commission for HarmonyOS apps

Huawei‘s homegrown operating system, HarmonyOS, is experiencing rapid growth in China. The platform, launched in 2019 as an alternative to Android after U.S. sanctions restricted access to Google’s mobile OS, now holds the second-largest market share in China at 17%.

That’s higher than the share of Apple’s iOS, which sits at 16% while Google’s Android remains dominant with a commanding 68% share. Huawei’s quick ascent in its domestic market seems to be fueling a shift in its strategy towards app developers.

Currently, Huawei doesn’t charge developers for using its HarmonyOS platform. However, a new report by Bloomberg suggests the company is considering implementing a 20% commission fee on app revenue.

HarmonyOS NEXT System Fluency(1)

Charging developers a commission on revenue is a common industry practice, with leaders like Apple and Google charging rates ranging from 15% to 30%. Huawei has yet to officially comment on this change.

Huawei’s recent success appears more hardware-driven than software-focused. The company’s smartphone business has seen a significant rise since the Mate 60 series launch last year which was powered by the in-house Kirin chips with 5G capabilities despite ongoing U.S. sanctions.

Their latest flagship, the Pura 70 series also enjoyed a rapid sell-out upon its April release. This resurgence seems to be impacting Apple’s market share in China, based on market research data. Looking ahead, Huawei is expected to unveil the Mate 70 sometime between September and October.

The Mate 70 is expected to be the first Huawei phone to feature the stable version of HarmonyOS NEXT, which will completely drop support for Android apps. HarmonyOS NEXT is currently in the testing phase, with recent reports suggesting that the Developer Preview 2 offers better animation effects than Android.

It remains to be seen if the company officially implements the rumored commission fee and how developers will respond to this change in the HarmonyOS ecosystem.

Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 vs 8 Gen 2: Display

Both chips support the same on-device display resolution – QHD+ @ 144 Hz or 4K Ultra HD @ 60 Hz, although they have dissimilar external display resolution support.

The maximum external display resolution for the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is 8K @ 30 Hz, while it is 4K @ 60 Hz for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Both chips support 10-bit colour and multiple HDR formats – HDR10, HDR10+, and HDR Vivid.

Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 vs 8 Gen 2: Connectivity

The connectivity features on both chips are largely the same, but several minor tweaks that could make a difference to you.

Both chips have the Snapdragon X70 5G modem, but the peak downloading speed in the SD 8 Gen 2 is 10 Gbps, significantly higher than the 6.5 Gbps peak download speed in the SD 8s Gen 3.

Another difference is the Bluetooth standard. While the SD 8s Gen 3 supports Bluetooth v5.4, the SD 8 Gen 2 uses a slightly older version – Bluetooth v5.3, although the difference is very minimal.

Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 vs 8 Gen 2: Which is Better?

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 has CPU advantages over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It reflects on the spec sheet as well as on the benchmarks. However, the 8 Gen 2 gets a slight edge in terms of GPU performance, offering better gaming performance.

The rest of the specifications are pretty much similar.

So, if gaming is my primary concern, I’d go all in with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but for anything else, I prefer the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3.

China successfully conducted a critical test on a new rocket engine designed for its upcoming crewed lunar missions. The test fired three YF-100K engines simultaneously, generating a combined thrust of 382 metric tons.

China’s next generation spacecraft and lunar lander will be powered by the rocket

This engine will power the Long March 10, a new heavy-lift launch vehicle under development specifically for carrying China’s next-generation spacecraft and lunar lander. The Long March 10 will stand 92.5 meters tall, roughly equivalent to a 32-story building, and boast a liftoff weight of 2,189 metric tons. With a thrust of 2,678 tons, it will be capable of launching spacecraft weighing at least 27 tons towards the Moon.

China Rocket

China’s plan for its first crewed lunar landing involves two Long March 10 launches from the Wenchang Space Launch Center. The first launch will carry the lunar landing module, while the second will deliver the crewed spacecraft. Once in lunar orbit, the two vehicles will dock, allowing astronauts to board the landing module for their descent to the lunar surface. After completing their mission, the astronauts will return to the lunar orbiter via the landing module and ultimately back to Earth.

Rumors persist: iQOO may ditch 13 Pro model

iQOO‘s upcoming flagship series might see a significant shift in strategy. According to reliable tech tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the development of the iQOO 13 Pro variant appears to have been halted.

Digital Chat Station stated, “The development of the Pro project has been stopped, and the probability of it being dropped is 89.3746%.” This suggests a strong likelihood that the iQOO 13 Pro won’t be released alongside the standard iQOO 13.

However, it’s not all bad news for iQOO fans. The tipster also revealed, “The good news is that some specifications of the standard version have been epically enhanced.” That means the focus might have now shifted entirely to the iQOO 13, with its features receiving a substantial upgrade.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors about the cancellation of the Pro model in the iQOO 13 series. The same tipster mentioned this in previous reports (1, 2), iterating that the Pro variant may not be released this year. We’ve also discussed the possible reasons behind discontinuing the Pro model in a separate report, which you can read here.

It remains to be seen exactly how much of a performance boost the standard model will receive, but the elimination of a Pro variant suggests iQOO is confident the base model can stand strong against the competition.

So far, the device is rumored to have a flat OLED display with 2K resolution. The screen will also have an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner for biometrics. Moreover, the device is said to offer up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of storage. It may house a 6,000mAh battery with 120W fast charging support. There is a possibility that the iQOO 13 may launch in November of this year.

Infinix Note 40 India Offer Price

The company recently confirmed that the Note 40 will launch in India on 21st June 2024. Now, industry sources close to the matter have shared the launch offer price with 91Mobiles. The Infinix Note 40 will reportedly launch for 15,999 INR with offers. Sources added that the official pricing will be slightly higher than this. So we can expect it to be around 1,500 INR or 2,000 INR more than its special launch price. This means that the Infinix Note 40 could cost around 17,999 INR in the Indian market.

The report adds that the customers will also be able to buy the smartphone for a no-cost EMI option with payments being around 1,333 INR per month. To recall, the Infinix Note 40 could be one of the most affordable smartphone to offer wireless charging support. This device arrives with MagSafe wireless charging support, similar to the Note 40 Pro and Note 40 Pro+. Based on what we know so far, the base model could sport a tall 6.78-inch AMOLED display that offers FHD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and 1300 nits of peak brightness.

Under the hood, it is equipped with the MediaTek Dimensity 7020 SoC. A large 5,000mAh battery pack power this device, which supports 45W wired fast charging and 20W wireless fast charging. For optics, you get a 108-megapixel primary camera with OIS support and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor on the rear. Meanwhile, the front houses a 32-megapixel shooter for selfies and video calls. This model runs on the Android 14 OS based XOS 14 custom skin out of the box.

Leak suggests iPhone 16 Pro / Max will be larger than their predecessors

According to previous rumors, the iPhone 16 Pro models could sport the narrowest bezels ever on the phone. Apart from that, now we also have more information about the dimensions of the iPhone 16 series devices.

iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max narrowest bezels in phone

A recent report from IT Home suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be slightly larger than their predecessors. However, the thickness will remain the same. The source of the information is unofficial renders of the iPhone 16 series devices, which also include the dimensions. You can see how the dimensions are different as compared to the predecessors in the table below.

Phone modelHeight (mm)Width (mm)Thickness (mm)
iPhone 15 Pro Max159.976.78.25
iPhone 16 Pro Max163.0377.588.25
iPhone 15 Pro146.670.68.25
iPhone 16 Pro149.6171.458.25
iPhone 15 Plus 160.977.87.8
iPhone 16 Plus160.8877.757.8
iPhone 15147.671.67.8
iPhone 16147.6371.627.8

As you can see, the base iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus are basically the same in size as their predecessor. However, the camera module is redesigned which reportedly enables the phone to capture Spatial Video, like the Apple Vision Pro headset.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously noted that the iPhone 16 Pro Max may come with a longer battery life as compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It could be due to a larger battery pack on the inside. According to a previous rumor from earlier this year, the Pro models may also come with a slightly larger 1/1.14-inch main sensor and a periscope telephoto lens. All of the above requires more internal space, which could be a reason for the size expansion of the upcoming Pro iPhone models.

In addition to the rendering, Weibo (a Chinese microblogging site) tipster “Instant Digital” shared the width of the bezels of all four iPhone 16 models. However, it’s important to note that his predictions of dimensions are slightly different than what we are seeing with the latest render. To be more specific, Instant Digital predicted the height and weight of the iPhone 16 / Plus to be 2mm smaller than the predecessor, while the latest render claims they will remain the same. That being said, both of the sources are unofficial and you should take it with a pinch of salt.

Unfortunately, this was all the information that was shared regarding this device. Although we can expect more details to surface soon.
