Zepp Health (Huami) has announced three new smartwatches – the Amazfit GTR 3, Amazfit GTR 3 Pro, and the Amazfit GTS 3. All three smartwatches pack multiple new features and competitive price tags. Just like their predecessors, they should sell pretty well. However, there is a demographic that most likely won’t be picking up any of the new smartwatches, not that they are bad, but because none of these smartwatches is for them, no thanks to their size.

The last time Zepp Health announced a smartwatch under its GT series with a small dial was in 2019, and that was the Amazfit GTR 42mm which launched with a 1.20-inch display. Since then, it has launched 8 new smartwatches under the GT series, none of which has a display smaller than 1.39 inches. 

My wife has an Amazfit GTR 47 Lite, and while she likes it, especially for its long battery life, she has said a few times that she wishes it was smaller. So, on some days she ditches it for her Withings hybrid watch which not only has a smaller display, but is more comfortable, and is a better match for select outfits. We have both discussed picking up new Amazfit smartwatches, but seeing as none of these new models have a small display, I don’t see her sticking to Amazfit when she’s ready to upgrade.

Not everyone wants a watch with a large display, and there are lots of people, including me, with a small wrist size. It is therefore disappointing to see Zepp Health launch products that do not cater to this demographic. Competitors such as Apple and Samsung know the importance of having multiple sizes which is why their watches including the new Apple Watch Series 7 and Galaxy Watch4 series come in different sizes.

I have no idea what Zepp Health’s product lineup for the future looks like but I want to believe there is space for a smaller Amazfit GTR watch. Last year, it launched the Amazfit GTR 2e, a cheaper version but with the same screen size as the GTR 2. The GTS 2, on the other hand, got two more affordable models – the GTS 2e and the GTS 2 Mini, with the latter packing a smaller display than its siblings. If it plans to launch more third-generation GT models, then it makes sense to include an Amazfit GTR 3 Mini with a smaller display or an Amazfit GTR 3 42mm version.

Of course, there are tradeoffs with having a smaller display such as a smaller battery which means reduced battery life. Nevertheless, if the battery life can be kept at 12 days just like on the Amazfit GTR 42mm, folks should be fine with it. Heck, the new Amazfit GTR 3 Pro and Amazfit GTS 3 both have a 12-day battery life.

Huami Technology is known for its Amazfit brand of fitness wearables. The Amazfit GTR 47mm/42mm and Amazfit GTS are one of the most affordable and value for money smartwatches available in the market. They are now receiving new firmware update with bug fixes in China.

The maker of Xiaomi Mi Bands is slowly growing its product portfolio and entering into new markets. At the same time, it continues to support all of its products with regular software updates.

With feedback from its users, the company has been improving the overall experience of its products. Following the trend, the brand releases new firmware update for two of its popular smartwatches – Amazfit GTR 47mm/42mm and Amazfit GTS in China.

The firmware update for these wearables brings different fixes for each. For instance, the 47mm version of GTR gets optimization for battery life and fix for abnormal heart rate syncing, whereas the 42mm variant gets fix for automatic restart issue. Interestingly, the changelog for GTS is same as GTR 47mm with an extra fix for problem with all-day heart rate monitoring.

Huami introduced the Amazfit GTR 42mm smartwatch in  India today. The GTR 42mm is the second product in the lineup after the GTR 47mm, which released in India earlier this month with a price tag of Rs. 10,999 (~$154).  Starting Sept. 29, customers can purchase the 42mm edition through Flipkart at Rs. 9,999 (~$141). The retailer site will be carrying out its Big Billion Days sale from the same date. Huami Corporation has partnered with PR innovations, a leading Indian technology importer to market the Amazfit GTR in the subcontinent.

Featuring a 1.2-inch AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection with anti-fingerprint coating, the Amazfit GTR 42mm is available in color variants such as Starry Black, Moonlight White, Cherry Blossom Pink, Coral Red. These color variants come with silicon strap. Its Glitter Edition features a leather strap.  Huami claims that the device is sprinkled with a dash of elegance and urbane fashion sense, and represents excellent craftsmanship. Its dimensions are 42.6 x 42.6 x 9.2mm and it weighs 25.5 grams.

The smartwatch features a BioTracker, PPG optical heart-rate sensor, 3-axis geomagnetic sensor, 6-axis acceleration sensor, ambient light sensor and pressure sensor. It  is water-resistant up to 50-meters and displays incoming calls and other notifications. It can be paired with iOS 10 or above and Android 5.0 or higher devices through Bluetooth 5.0 LE.

The GTR 42mm features 12 distinct sport modes including a few variations of running, cycling, mountaineering, swimming, trail running and workout. Once the training session is over, the smartwatch displays all relevant data collected during the session such as BPM range, pace, distance, number of laps, lap time, etc. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the GPS + GLONASS double positioning feature, using which they can access highly accurate route information. The Huami Amazfit GTR 42mm features a 195 mAh battery, which the company claims lasts up to 12 days on a single charge.

Xiaomi-backed Huami is celebrating her 4 years anniversary today and to mark the day, the company has launched the Amazfit GTR 42mm Special Edition in China. The Amazfit GTR 42mm special edition presents with a noble, elegant appearance, coupled with an affordable 999 yuan ($141) price tag. The smartwatch is well suited for women as a result of its attractive appearance.

The special edition Amazfit GTR smartwatch is not very different from the regular version launched recently. The major difference is the bright colour with which the frame and bezels are coated. The frame has a rose gold coating while the bezel and leather straps are coated in white colours. The bezel around the screen is also dotted with 60 Austrian cubic zirconias which give it a feminine look.

Apart from all these, the internals is the same as the regular version. As a reminder, the Amazfit GTR 42mm series is equipped with a 1.20-inch AMOLED colorful screen with a resolution of 390×390. The screen is covered by the Corning Gorilla 3 with anti-fingerprint (AF) coating.

In terms of functions, it supports mobile phone calls, text messages, emails, calendars, social applications and other information reminders, and can also find mobile phones and control mobile phones to play music. The watch also supports contactless payment as it is equipped with a built-in NFC chip. It can also be used to unlock the smart door lock and other contactless services such as bus card.

In terms of battery life, the Amazfit GTR 42mm daily use mode lasts for 12 days, the basic watch mode is 34 days, and the GPS continues to work for 22 hours. The watch is also available in a 47mm version with a bigger 1.39-inch screen with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels.
