Now, a new report from analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong Intl Tech Research (via 9to5Mac) claims that the upcoming AR Glass headset has now entered the design development stage.

He also claims that the AR Glass product would be coming in the second half of 2024. The report further adds that Luxshare would remain one of Apple’s main suppliers for devices to come between late 2022 and 2024.

As for the development of the AR Glass, he adds that the product has now entered the design development stage in which the prototype will be ready by the end of this year while the mass production will start in the second half of 2024.

Apart from this AR/VR product, the Cupertino-based technology company is expected to announce a similar product later this year or early next year which is 100% focused on the augmented reality (AR) technology.

If the reports are to be believed, then the mixed reality headset from Apple will focus on media content, gaming, and communication. It could be powered by the Apple Silicon M-series chip and offer a high-resolution displays, along with several sensors and cameras.

The news arrives from known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on his latest investors note (Via 9To5Mac). Kuo added that the Cupertino based giant will launch the headset “with the same computing power level as the Mac,” with its chip design being the major difference between the AR headset from other brands. As per the analyst, the iPhone maker is also looking to replace the iPhone with AR in 10 years, with this headset acting as the first step towards thsi goal.

Notably, the 2022 launch year is in line with Kuo’s previous estimates of a fourth quarter launch next year. He stated that “The higher end processor will have similar computing power as the M1 for Mac, whereas the lower end processor will be in charge of sensor related computing.” Kuo is predicting that the AR headset will be equipped with two Sony 4K micro OLED display panels and will even arrive with support for VR.

Through its capable process power, the product could easily be a standalone gadget that doesn’t need to be paired with another Apple product. Kuo says that “if the headset is positioned only as an accessory for the Mac or iPhone, it will not be conducive to the growth of the product. An AR headset that works independently means that it will have its own ecosystem and provide the most complete and flexible user experience.”

There were some indications that the first version of these headsets will have up to 15 cameras to provide an immersive experience for users. Another rumored Apple headset is the Apple Glass, which will use optical waveguide technology to overlay computer-generated graphics into actual scenery. It was also rumored that Apple could launch a mixed reality headset within months as recently as March.

Apple’s AR headsets will be a wonderful addition to the US tech firm’s iconic and innovative lineup of products. Kuo, in the note, stated that Apple would launch AR HMD devices in Q2, 2022. The device will provide a video see-through augmented reality experience, using a lens setup by Genius.

Kuo’s research covered Apple’s camera lens supply chain, and an iPhone 13 is in the works, going by initial supply batches of the camera components from suppliers, Genius and Largan. However, it is believed that Largan did not pass the latest evaluation by Apple, leading to the choice of Genius for the June supply of camera components.

Several other manufacturers like HTC and Razer recently unveiled their latest VR headsets. A few other OEMs are in active research on such devices, which have wide applications.

Currently, Mike Rockwell is overseeing the development of an AR headset at Apple but things don’t seem to be going well. With Dan Riccio into the mix, Rockwell will handle the day-to-day work on the project while Riccio will have oversight over the efforts.

Riccio has already handed over top-level management of the Apple iPhone to John Ternus, who will also be the new head of hardware engineering. It has also been confirmed that Johny Srouji will handle the development of a new camera and display technology. He is the same executive that headed the design and engineering of Apple Silicon.

As per the reports, Apple is working on an ultra-high-end 8K VR headset that could possibly cost around $3,000. This is surprising given that so far, the company’s work has been on AR and not VR. The company has been building ARKit, which is a developer API enabling the creation of AR experiences using cameras and sensors of iPhones and iPads.

Based on the information available so far, it seems that the upcoming AR/VR device from Apple will primarily be focusing on the developers or creators and not the mass adoption. We expect to know more about this product in the coming months.

According to an AppleInsider report, the Cupertino based giant’s augmented reality/virtual reality headset might feature fluids that can deform to the shape of lens to help improve the eyesight of the user. In either an AR or VR headset, the integral aspect is the ability to see the virtual content. However, since a headset will generally have the display at a close proximity of the users’ eye, which might cause discomfort overtime. Generally, a VR headset uses optical lenses positioned between the eyes and the screen, so being able to adjust the perceived focal distance for the user might make it more comfortable to use.

Editor’s Pick: Xiaomi aims to overtake Huawei and Apple next year with 240 million smartphone shipments

At the moment, the technology used generally would have the lenses shift distances from the user to change the perceived focal length. Furthermore, this still creates an issue if the user has bad eyesight, which may require a change in lenses to completely remove the issue. This would cause users to remove their glasses before using the VR headsets since changing the lenses isn’t practical. But Apple might be able to working on a fix for the issue with a recent patent titled, “Electronic device with a tunable lens.”

In the patent, the company suggests that the problem of lens selection and switching could be eliminated by using a single lens system. The iPhone maker proposes taking advantage of fluid and pressure to make adjustments through a malleable lens that would require little input from the user. To sum things up, Apple might be working on creating a series of lens components around a central fluid chamber, which can be adjusted by inflating or emptying to change their optical properties.

It will be a new and independent product line from the company that is speculated to debut in 2019.

Like the Apple Watch, the forthcoming AR headset from the Cupertino-based company is expected to feature its own microprocessor. Also, the company will be introducing a new kind of operating system called rOS for its new AR headset. It seems to be a customized version of iOS like watchOS and tvOS. It is also pegged to feature its own version of App Store.

Unlike the existing VR headsets that requires users to make use of a smartphone as an engine, the Apple AR headset that is rumored to debut in 2019 will have its own screen. Apple is yet to finalize on how users will be controlling the AR device. Initial reports claim that Apple is considering options like voice-commands through Siri, head gestures and touch. There is no information on the design of the device. However, initial reports suggest that it may look like Google Glass.

Apple is rumored to be working on this upcoming AR headset since a couple of years. It is speculated that the AR device from the company may be unveiled to the world in 2019 and it could be available for buying by early 2020.
