According to a Canalys report, Xiaomi had a market share of 13.5 percent in the global smartphone market, with its shipments hitting 43.9 million units. This meant that the company held the third spot, which was down from 16.7 percent market share in the previous quarter. On the other hand, Apple had secured the second spot, overtaking the Chinese tech giant, with around a 15 percent market share in the third quarter.

As per Xiaomi’s President, Wang Xiang, the company’s third quarter performance had saw a slight decline. However, the reason that Apple overtook it was due to the robust demand for the iPhone 13 series. Apart from just the 2021 iPhone lineup, the senior official stated that the shortage of chips in this quarter also affected the shipments of the company’s smartphones. The executive believes that the shortage might have impacted shipments worth significant 10 to 20 million handset units.

Despite the overall decline, Wang Xiang added that the brand’s premium grade smartphone market share saw a rise. In the first three quarters of 2021, the company shipped a total of 18 million high end phones, which accounts for 12.8 percent of its total shipments. This is up from 8 percent during the same period from last year. The President further added that Xiaomi will continue to follow its high end segment strategy while also putting efforts in other segments as well.
