Apple has been hard at work improving its AI (Artificial Intelligence). The brand unveiled Apple Intelligence a while back, but faced mixed reception when compared to rivals like Samsung’s Galaxy AI. But after updates and improvements, the experience is more polished than before. So here’s a list of the best Apple Intelligence features that you should be using right now.

Apple iOS 26: Visual Intelligence

Live Translation

Real-time translation has finally arrived through Messages, FaceTime, and regular calls. Whether you’re sending a message, talking on video, or making phone calls, Apple’s built-in AI translates both text and speech on the fly, with captions or spoken output powered by on-device models. All of it happens without leaving your chat, helping you break language barriers instantly and privately.

Visual Intelligence

Ever wonder if your iPhone could read whatever’s on your screen or see through the camera? With Visual Intelligence, it essentially does. Capture a screenshot, and your device can recognize a restaurant, a product, even a calendar date. It also allows users to point the camera at something and quickly get information about it. You get links for further research or get the option to ask ChatGPT. This is a great quality of life feature that ensures you’re always quick steps away from all the details.

Writing Tools

Apple’s new Writing Tools sit inside Mail, Notes, and even third-party apps. Whether you need to rewrite for tone, expand a draft, or generate a quick summary, the tools offer one-click refinements. For professionals, it’s like having a lightweight editor built into iOS. For casual users, it means no more stressing over how to phrase that tricky email.

Siri Gets Smarter with ChatGPT Integration

Siri is finally reaching its true potential thanks to the new ChatGPT integration. So Siri is the best it’s ever been to use. Now, it can seamlessly hand off your query to ChatGPT, to deliver better answers, creative suggestions, and much more. Apple has managed to blend voice assistant with conversational AI, making Siri more aware and capable.

Summarization & Notification Summaries

Apple Intelligence finally addresses the overload problem. With summarisation tools, you can make long emails, web articles, or notes into more digestible forms. Even notifications benefit from this functionality as your iPhone can now sort and summarizes alerts so you only see what matters at a glance.

While Apple Intelligence isn’t as impressive as it was made out to be, the company isn’t giving up on artificial intelligence. The brand is already working with OpenAI to integrate advanced AI capabilities, but it seems like future AI plans might give Apple some trouble.

Apple may face scrutiny for AI deal with Alibaba

The Cupertino based giant has plans to introduce more AI models, and this might involve the Chinese giant, Alibaba. However, this deal has unsurprisingly raised alarms for US lawmakers who are wary of the Apple-Alibaba partnership. According to The New York Times report, a source claimed that White House officials and members of the House Select Committee on China are asking Apple executives about this collaboration.

The primary cause of concern seems to revolve around data and in what capacity it would be shared with Alibaba. It seems like Apple is also being questioned about possible commitments that it might have made with Chinese regulators. The iPhone maker’s answers may have been unsatisfactory, as the source claimed that Apple execs could not answer most of these questions. This would likely lead to Apple facing increased scrutiny in the AI deal with Alibaba.

Apple aims to bring more AI models to Apple Intelligence. But so far, only OpenAI’s ChatGPT seems to be the only available option. Working with Chinese companies raises concerns over national security, particularly around data security, data privacy, and more. Earlier this year, a rumor had also surfaced of Apple turning to DeepSeek to bring Apple Intelligence for the iPhones sold in China, which is against sharing its citizens’ data with a foreign AI model.

Users will reportedly have the option to choose between Google and OpenAI’s AI

Apple is reportedly planning to integrate Google’s Gemini AI into its iOS 18.4 update, allowing users to choose between Google’s AI model and OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Apple Intelligence features. This development, spotted in a snippet of code by developer Aaron Perris (@aaronp613) on X, suggests that Apple is expanding its AI capabilities by adopting Gemini. For those unfamiliar, Gemini is what powers most of the AI features of Android flagships such as the Galaxy S25 series.

The code snippet reveals that users will soon have the option to select either “Google” or “OpenAI” as their preferred AI model, which would offer greater flexibility and will potentially improve the overall performance of Apple Intelligence.

The upcoming iOS 18.4 update is expected to introduce several AI-driven enhancements, which are expected to include prioritized notifications and a new Image Playground mode. Nonetheless, the integration with Google Gemini doesn’t necessarily guarantee a significant improvement in the AI features. Apple has been playing it safe since the beginning and their approach may have not changed much as of now. We hope to see Apple Intelligence get smarter with it, but we’ll also have to wait till the rollout before commenting further.

Apple might finally have a way of bringing its Apple Intelligence to China. The brand announced the latest iPhone 16 lineup with new AI powered features, but these never rolled out in China. This is where DeepSeek could come in as a great solution, as per a new report.

Apple could use DeepSeek for its iPhones

China is a major market for the Cupertino based giant. Athough, Apple couldn’t roll out its AI features in the region due to local regulations. The company needs to get Apple Intelligence approved by the Chinese government to run its AI model. But the newly unveiled DeepSeek could open the door for Apple Intelligence in China and might even offer a few improvements as well.

Apple Intelligence

This new AI model was developed in China and has disrupted AI giants and the industry as a whole. According to a new report from Weibo, Tim Cook is excited in the opportunity to work with DeepSeek. The iPhone maker is reportedly in the testing phase of integrating the AI model into its devices. Considering how DeepSeek also has a cheaper operating cost, it could be a serviceable alternative to Apple’s AI, which it ships in other regions.

In a recent research report, it was found that Apple was losing market share to local brands due to iPhones lacking AI functionality. Android flagships now arrive with features that leverage AI. So this might be a key strategic move from Apple. Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report at the moment, so take this news with a pinch of salt and stick around for more.

With the rollout of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS 15.3, Apple’s latest AI-powered feature, Apple Intelligence, is now enabled by default on compatible devices. While this set of AI tools brings features like message summaries, image generation, and enhanced Siri interactions, it also comes with a significant storage requirement. Apple’s official documentation confirms that Apple Intelligence consumes up to 7GB of storage across iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

You can also disable specific features instead of turning it off completely

For users struggling with limited storage or those who simply do not find the AI features useful, there is an option to disable Apple Intelligence entirely. Once turned off, the local AI models are removed from the device, reclaiming the occupied space. This can be especially beneficial for iPhone users dealing with constrained storage, particularly those who do not actively use AI-generated content or enhancements.

To disable Apple Intelligence, users can navigate to Settings on an iPhone or iPad, or System Settings on a Mac, and access the “Apple Intelligence & Siri” section. From there, toggling off Apple Intelligence will prompt a confirmation, after which the system will remove AI-related resources. Some AI features, such as Writing Tools, Genmoji, and Image Playground, will no longer be accessible. However, certain tools like the Clean Up feature in the Photos app may remain available.

Apple Intelligence is currently not available in mainland China, and Apple has not provided a timeline for its release in that region. Additionally, only devices equipped with Apple’s latest hardware, such as the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 series, and M-series iPads and Macs support Apple Intelligence. Users who have updated to iOS 18.2 must also opt in to gain access to the AI features.

For those unsure about completely turning off Apple Intelligence, Apple provides options to selectively disable individual features through app settings. Features like message summaries in notifications and writing assistance tools can be switched off without disabling the AI suite entirely. By managing these settings, users can tailor their experience while keeping control over their device’s storage and functionality.

Apple‘s AI-powered Apple Intelligence is revolutionizing iPhone, iPad, and Mac capabilities, but there’s a catch—it now demands significantly more storage. With the latest iOS updates, users need to ensure they have ample space to enjoy these cutting-edge features.

Apple Intelligence’s storage requirement increased significantly

Initially, Apple Intelligence required 4GB of free storage when it launched in iOS 18.1. This was manageable for most users, as Apple prioritized privacy by ensuring its AI models ran on-device rather than relying on cloud processing. However, the release of iOS 18.2 brought new AI features, doubling the requirement to 7GB of free storage.

The 7GB storage requirement applies uniformly across iPhones, iPads, and Macs. For users with multiple Apple devices, the storage impact multiplies. If you want to use Apple Intelligence on all three, you’ll need a total of 21GB across your devices. Unfortunately, there’s no option to reduce this space usage by disabling specific AI features.

What’s driving the increase?

iOS 18.2 introduced several advanced AI features that justify the storage hike. These include: Genmoji for creating personalized AI-powered emojis, ChatGPT integration in Siri, Image Playground for generating and editing visuals, Visual Intelligence for enhanced image recognition, Compose with ChatGPT for generating written content. These features are part of Apple’s efforts to make AI more powerful and accessible, but they come with a growing storage footprint.

Looking ahead, Apple doesn’t seem to be adding new AI features in iOS 18.3. However, the upcoming iOS 18.4 is set to introduce major Siri upgrades, likely pushing storage requirements even higher. Some experts speculate that the requirement could reach 10GB per device in the near future, especially with iOS 19 on the horizon.

For users, this trend highlights the importance of choosing higher storage tiers when purchasing new Apple devices. As Apple Intelligence evolves, on-device storage will play a critical role in delivering the seamless experience Apple users expect. If you’re running low on space, now might be the time to plan an upgrade.

Apple confirmed that iOS 18 will be available for download on September 16th, just a few days before the iPhone 16 series launch. The update will reach all compatible iPhones on the same day while the iPhone 16s will ship pre-installed with it.

The headline feature of iOS 18, Apple Intelligence, won’t be available immediately, though. Users will have to wait for iOS 18.1 (or iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1) to experience it, the rollout of which is expected in October.

Also, the first batch of AI features will be limited to US English. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and UK will get their regional English support in December. Whereas, other major languages like Chinese, French, and Spanish will get support next year.

Apple Intelligence promises a range of features designed to enhance productivity and communication. October’s update will introduce system-wide Writing Tools, enabling users to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across various apps, including Mail, Notes, and Pages.

iOS 18.1 also brings AI-powered improvements to the Photos app. Users will be able to create short movies based on descriptions within the Memories feature, search photos using natural language queries, and pinpoint specific moments within videos. Additionally, the update introduces a “Clean Up” function that removes unwanted objects or people from photos.

The Notes and Phone apps will benefit from AI-powered recording transcription and summarization. Similarly, emails will be condensed into summaries, while Mail receives a revamp with Priority Messages and Smart Reply functionalities.

Siri is receiving a significant overhaul with iOS 18.1. The virtual assistant will now support on-device typing for queries, alongside a more “natural” and “flexible” conversational style. Notably, Siri will be able to answer “thousands of questions” about Apple device features and settings.

It’s important to note that Apple Intelligence requires a relatively recent device. The AI features will only be available on the newly launched iPhone 16 lineup, iPhone 15 Pro, and Pro Max models, as well as iPads and Macs equipped with M1 chips or later.

Apple Intelligence was announced at this year’s WWDC in June. Although the exact release timeline for the public remains unclear, a host of AI features are expected to debut in the next year on the company’s iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The Cupertino-based tech giant has been releasing beta versions. The Developer Beta 3 of the latest iOS and iPadOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 Sequoia bring an AI-powered ‘Clean Up’ tool in the Photos app. This is Apple’s answer to Google’s Magic Eraser and Samsung’s Object Eraser.

Apple’s ‘Clean Up’ AI feature takes on Magic and Object Eraser

Before we get into the details, It’s worth noting that the beta version is unstable. Hence, it is not recommended to download and install on a device device that is your daily driver. The feature is released only on devices that support Apple Intelligence. These include the iPhone 15 Pro models and the M-powered Macs and iPads.

The Clean Up tool as the name suggests can identify and remove distracting objects and strangers. It also comes with the ability to heal blemishes and pixelate people’s faces to conceal their identity. Although it intelligently detects and removes unwanted elements, users get the option to tap, brush, and circle if they don’t want something in the image. You can also zoom in to fix minute details. It is also capable of removing unwanted shadows and reflections.

The Clean Up feature is accessible when editing a picture in the Photos app. It appears as an eraser-style icon in the bottom toolbar. Images edited using the tool will be labelled as ‘Modified with Clean Up’ and added to the EXIF data. It works with all images even if they were captured by another phone or a DSLR.

The AI-powered Clean Up feature is not entirely flawless. We can expect it to be polished till the release of a stable version.

We have previously come across numerous reports claiming that OpenAI used YouTube content to train its text-to-video model Sora. Now it’s reported that companies like Apple, Nvidia, Anthropic, and more are also using the ‘publicly available data’ generated by users to train their AI models. Apparently, Apple used tens of thousands of YouTube videos with subtitles to train Apple Intelligence, which is against the platform’s content policy.

The news comes from an investigation by Proof News that was co-published with Wired.

According to the investigation, Apple and the other companies were using a dataset called YouTube Subtitles that included transcripts of 173,536 YouTube videos from over 48,000 channels. Videos in the dataset span from educational channels such as Khan Academy and MIT to news sites including The Wall Street Journal, to some of the platform’s top creators like MrBeast and Marques Brownlee.

According to Marques Brownlee, Apple technically avoids “fault” as they sourced their AI from companies that used the transcripts from YouTube videos instead of using the data directly. Nonetheless, the data/transcripts still contribute to the AI models, in which the creators invested their time and money. Brownlee concluded by saying that this is going to be an evolving problem for a long time.

Proof News also created a tool for creators to search for their content in the dataset. The YouTube Subtitles dataset does not include imagery from videos but does include some translated subtitles in languages. The dataset was reportedly created by a non-profit research lab called Eleuther AI, which focuses on promoting open science norms.

None of the companies mentioned above immediately commented on the matter. YouTube chief executive Neal Mohan has already made it clear in an interview that companies using YouTube videos to train their AI models is a “clear violation” of the platform’s policies.

Users can choose between animation, illustration, or sketch styles.

New features, like the upgraded Siri and ChatGPT, won’t be available until 2025

Apple announced Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024. This AI suite will offer on-device and cloud-based language models. A public beta for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia is planned for this fall, but full features and wider device support will arrive next year. While free, Apple Intelligence requires an A17 Pro chip or M-series chip, limiting access to iPhone 15 Pro models and the upcoming iPhone 16 series – devices with the latest processing power for AI tasks.

This could be detrimental towards both people in the EU and Apple itself

This is a significant blow for EU users considering these features were among the most anticipated upgrades unveiled at the developer conference. Apple Intelligence, for instance, is the company’s flagship AI initiative, promising a more integrated user experience across Apple devices. iPhone Mirroring would have allowed seamless remote access to iPhones from Macs, while SharePlay screen sharing enhancements aimed to improve collaboration functionalities.

The specific reasons behind the DMA causing these issues remain unclear. The company claims it could jeopardize “privacy and security,” but the details are yet to be revealed.

This situation could be a significant development for both Apple and its customers in the EU. For Apple, it highlights the potential challenges posed by stricter regulations in key markets. The company may need to adapt its development strategies to comply with regional rules while maintaining a consistent user experience globally. For EU customers, it raises concerns about feature parity and access to the latest innovations. The lack of these features could leave them at a disadvantage compared to users in other regions.

Whether Apple finds a solution to appease regulators and offer these features in the EU remains to be seen. This situation will likely be closely monitored by both Apple and its customers in the coming months.

Apple announced AI features called Apple Intelligence last week at the annual WWDC. They will be integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia on iPhones, iPads, and Macs respectively. While the newly announced software version will be released for the public later this year, it’s common to expect them loaded with Apple Intelligence features. However, that won’t be the case. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that you will need to wait longer as the rollout will be slow and stretch into 2025.

Apple Intelligence’s rollout will be slow

Apple Intelligence

Gurman reports that Apple will roll out the new Intelligence features in a phased manner spanning across months. The Cupertino-based tech giant wants to avoid the difficulties that other AI systems have faced. The company traditionally rolls out features announced at WWDC in September when the new iPhones go on sale. This time, Apple has revealed that the latest AI technology won’t follow a strict timeline. At the recent keynote, the company just gave a roadmap of what’s arriving later this year and early next year.

Gurman notes that the delayed arrival of Apple Intelligence is better in several ways. It will help the company in managing its resources by not overwhelming its staff in getting out all features done at once. Apple will only focus on American English so that it has more time to train its AI models in other languages although it may take years. The Cupertino-based tech giant will be taking its time to strengthen its cloud infrastructure. This will help mitigate the risk of servers crashing due to too much user load. Apple is also said to work on fixing the nonsensical information delivered by AI services by starting with a small user base.

Citing employees involved in Apple Intelligence’s development, a subset of the service’s features won’t be available until next year. These include the upgraded Siri assistant features that stole the show at WWDC including finding things based on context, on-screen awareness features, and more. The ChatGPT integration will also arrive in 2025. But on the bright side, the initial version of Apple Intelligence will still pack features like prioritizing notifications, summarising webpages, writing tools, image generation, and Genmoji.

Gurman also notes that non-AI features including changes to the Mail app, the ability to edit spatial video, and more won’t arrive with the initial software version updates.
