Apple’s new titanium case for the iPhone 15 Pro Max is one of its biggest selling points. It’s supposed to be stronger and more durable than the aluminum used in previous iPhones. However, a recent drop test by YouTuber PhoneBuff shows that the titanium body doesn’t offer any significant real-world benefit in terms of drop protection.

The drop test compared the iPhone 15 Pro Max to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra in a series of rounds, with both phones dropped from the same height and onto the same materials. PhoneBuff employed robotic arms to ensure a fair and controlled test environment.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max suffered wide cracks across its glass back after being dropped from waist-level, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra experienced smaller cracks on two corners, despite being made of less durable materials.

In the second round, both phones were dropped with one of their corners facing down. The titanium frame of the iPhone 15 Pro Max remained fairly undamaged, but its rear glass started to fall off. The S23 Ultra’s frame, on the other hand, showed slight deformations, but the phone remained fully functional.

During the third round, both phones were dropped with their screens facing down. Both screens cracked significantly, but the Galaxy S23 Ultra did slightly worse due to its curved screen.

In the final round of the test, both phones were dropped from a higher point. The Galaxy S23 Ultra looked similar to how it did after the previous drop test, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max showed even more shattered glass on the front and rear.

Both smartphones were still working after the drop test, but the Galaxy S23 Ultra performed better than the iPhone 15 Pro Max, even though it has an aluminum frame. The S23 Ultra scored 39 points out of 40, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max scored 37. You can watch the full test below:

However, it seems that this performance came at a cost. According to some users, the iPhone 15 Pro has become one of the hottest gadgets of the year. Here are the details…

iPhone 15 Pro Overheating, a Design Flaw or Just Too Much Power?

The iPhone 15 series recently went on sale worldwide. As with every year, customers rushed to stores, either pre-ordering or lining up outside, competing to get their hands on the company’s latest tech offerings. However, some users have started experiencing issues with the phones they put so much effort and money into. Some users posted videos showing that the iPhone 15 Pro reached temperatures of around 42 degrees.

Of course, like many of you, we know that smartphones tend to heat up with heavy use. However, claims suggest that the iPhone 15 Pro models reach these temperatures after just 2 minutes of FaceTime conversations or after scrolling through Instagram Reels for 8-10 minutes, becoming too hot to hold. Some users even claim the phone heats up when not in use. Additionally, there are allegations of the phone overheating during charging.

Certainly, overheating is causing serious problems that hinder usage. Users complain about the phone entering protection mode and stopping the charge due to heat while charging. Of course, not every user experiences this issue. However, the number of complaints suggests there might be a problem with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models using the A17 Pro.

Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-respected Apple analyst, has weighed in on the overheating issues that some iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max users have been experiencing. He believes that the problem is more likely due to design compromises aimed at reducing the phone’s weight, rather than the new 3nm chip.

Specifically, Kuo points to the new titanium frame as a potential culprit. Titanium is lighter than stainless steel, but it is also a worse conductor of heat. This means that the iPhone 15’s new frame may not be able to dissipate heat as efficiently, which could lead to overheating. Kuo also suggests that using a case on the iPhone 15 could help to reduce overheating by providing a barrier between the phone’s frame and the user’s hand.

However, none of these are permanent solutions. Therefore, if you’ve purchased a new iPhone 15 Pro and are disappointed due to overheating issues, it would be beneficial to discuss this with Apple.

Apple is gearing up to launch the new iPhone 15 series later this year. However, prior to its release we have already covered numerous rumors and leaks regarding the upcoming smartphones. Now, the latest report reveals some of its updated design elements.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max camera design to see an update over the iPhone 14 Pro Max

The Cupertino based giant is apparently planning on making slight changes to the rear design of the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro Max models. The news arrives from tipster @Unknownz21 who shared the information on Twitter. In the leak, it was stated that the brand is planning on refreshing the camera module on the rear. The iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature a new layout for the camera sensors, which will also include a new periscope camera lens as well.

This new sensor will add to its magnification capabilities on the new iPhones. Although, these will be exclusive to the higher end Pro models. Apart from this, these new sensors will reportedly offer up to 5x or 6x optical zoom as well. The changes in the rear camera module layout is reportedly being made to accommodate this new sensor. On the other hand, the more affordable iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are expected to arrive with the 48 megapixel camera from the last gen iPhone 14 Pro models.

The new layout will have the ultra wide angle lens and telephoto camera swap spots on the rear camera module. For those unaware, the camera between the flash and LiDAR sensor is the one which features the new periscope lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max model. Back in July 2022, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that iPhone 15 Pro Max would be the only smartphone in Apple’s 2023 lineup to get a periscope camera lens and benefit from advanced optical zoom. Now, a new report suggests the Cupertino company is planning to source the periscope lenses from LG Innotek. Here are the details.

According to The Elec, the OIS actuators used in the periscope lens of the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be supplied by LG Innotek and Jahwa Electronics, with the two companies supplying 70% and 30%, respectively. Apparently, Apple is replacing its current suppliers, Japan Alps and Mitsumi.

Both LG Innotek and Jahwa are noted names in the industry. Jahwa, in particular, has worked with Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electro-Mechanics on actuators based on ball guides. The Korean company is reportedly supplying the components for the upcoming Galaxy S23 series and the Galaxy A54.

Apple previously used spring-type actuators in the iPhone cameras. However, the company could now be replacing it with ball guide type actuators, which are more accurate and power-efficient. As mentioned earlier, this new camera tech may be limited to iPhone 15 Pro Max models this year. However, Apple may bring it to both iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max next year.

As usual, iPhone 15 series could debut in spring this year. Rumors suggest Apple is planning to increase the differentiation between iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max by limiting some of the major hardware features to the higher-end model. The brand could even change the name of its top-of-the-line model to iPhone 15 Ultra.

A new report has suggested that BOE might be the firm that will supply Apple with OLED LTPO displays for its higher end iPhones in 2023. The panels will be for the iPhone 15 Pro series.

According to The Elec, the Chinese display maker will be producing and supplying OLED LTPO panels to the Cupertino based giant next year. The company was previously unsuccessful in supplying OLED screens for the iPhone 12 series, but did manage to enter the supply chain for the current gen flagship iPhone 13 lineup. However, it only made panels for the base model, while the higher end Pro variants were supplied by Samsung Display.

But now, this might change as BOE is looking to expand its OLED LTPO panel manufacturing to allow production of up 120Hz refresh rate screens. In other words, this report also suggests that the iPhone 15 Pro will feature 120Hz variable refresh rate. With the upcoming iPhone 14 series, BOE will continue to supply displays for the lower end model while Pro variants will still be supplied with Samsung and LG.

Although, the iPhone 15 series will only launch by next year, meanwhile, the iPhone 14 series is arriving in the second half of this year. It is expected to finally bring a redesign to the iPhone design and include a pill shaped cutout on the front for its selfie shooter and TrueDepth system. Previously, we had event reported on BOE supplying the company with 15 inch OLED displays for its future iPads. So it seems that the firm is moving up the Apple supply chain.

The iPhone 14 series is the anticipated Apple flagship smartphone lineup of this year. However, a new report has revealed some interesting news regarding the iPhone 15 Pro, which is set to launch next year.

According to a 9To5Mac report, known analyst Jeff Pu stated that the Cupertino based giant is apparently in talks with Lante Optics. Lante is expected to be the main supplier of periscope lenses that will be used in the 2023 iPhone lineup. The analyst claims that Apple has already started receiving component samples and has yet to approve the new parts, but the final approval should arrive sometime by May 2022.

In other words, the approval for the components means that the high end Pro models of 2023 iPhone will feature optical zoom lens. Notably, this deal will likely have Lante Optics supply the iPhone maker with more than 100 million parts for its products. Interestingly, this information is also in line with our previous reports that also hinted at the iPhone 15 Pro sporting a zoom lens. Although, the latest rumors hints at a 5x optical zoom which is half of the last report that suggested a 10x optical zoom.

The past rumor was also from a known Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, so these reports are in conflict with each other regarding the exact capabilities. Although, the inclusion of a periscopic zoom lens is still common between the two. Unfortunately, it is still too early to know for sure regarding Apple’s plans for the iPhone 15 series. Apple introduced support for eSIM on its smartphones with the iPhone XS and XS Max which enabled users to have second network support on the device through the digital SIM along with the regular physical SIM.

Now, if the latest report coming from a Brazilian website is to be believed, then Apple is planning to get rid of the physical SIM card slot from the iPhone in the coming years.

As per the report, the Apple iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models getting launched in 2023 could lack the physical SIM card slot. Instead, the devices will only have support for eSIM cards for connectivity. It is also said that there will be support for two eSIM cards, ensuring dual SIM functionality.

It’s still very early to get confirmed information about the Apple iPhone 15 series models getting launched in the year 2023, so we would advise you to take this information with a pinch of salt.

Even if this information turns out to be true, we expect the company to still make iPhone models with physical SIM card slots for the regions where eSIM functionality isn’t available.

Prior to this, there were rumors about Apple planning to remove the Lightning port from the smartphones and if the company also gets rid of the physical SIM card slot, then it would be a step further for a seamless design as well as improve water resistance.
