Asus began rolling out Android 16 update to its devices in early November alongside many other brands; however, its expansion has been sluggish, as the brand has been known for in recent years. The update is already available for four smartphones, and now the fifth one has joined the party, the ROG Phone 9 FE.

Asus confirmed the Android 16 rollout for the ROG Phone 9 FE via a post on its community forum. The update is tagged with the firmware version 36.0210.1420.30. It brings the Android security patch level to December 2025, in addition to the changes as part of Android 16.

The update doesn’t include major changes, but it does feature several quality-of-life upgrades to enhance the software experience. For instance, there’s a new Notification cooldown setting that lowers the volume of incoming notifications when an app sends you too many notifications within a short time. Additionally, the update includes a customizable power button option in advanced settings, a skip countdown button to the screen recording feature, Advanced Protection, and updated game profiles for many popular games. Read the complete changelog below.

Please back up your data before upgrading to Android 16.

Upgraded system to Android 16.

Updated Android security patch to 2025-12.

Adjusted the system navigation settings. The Predictive Back animation can be triggered by either the back gesture or long-pressing the back button.

Added the Notification cooldown setting: when many notifications are received within a short time, the device will lower its volume and minimize alerts.

Added a power button option in the advanced setting, allowing users to configure quick access to the digital assistant by long-pressing the power button.

Added the skip countdown button to the screen recording feature.

Added Theft Protection entry: Settings > Security & Lock Screen > Theft Protection.

Added Advanced Protection entry: Settings > Security & Lock Screen > Advanced Protection.

Updated game profiles for the following games: Genshin Impact (WW), GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE (TW), GODDESS OF VICTORY: NIKKE (WW), League of Legends: Wild Rift (TW), and League of Legends: Wild Rift (US).

Some 3rd-party apps are not compatible with Android 16 yet.

Note that Android 16 is a major upgrade for Asus phones. So, you’ll need to download a hefty package. For such bulky downloads, it’s recommended to use a Wi-Fi connection. Before installing the update, charge your phone to at least 40% to ensure a smoother installation. For added safety, you can back up important data to a different device or cloud storage.

Android 16 is the first major OS upgrade for the ROG Phone 9 FE, as it was released earlier this year running Android 15. The company promises just two major upgrades for this phone. So, Android 17 would be the final one. However, it will receive regular security patches for a few more years.

The Asus ROG Phone 9 FE has been in the news for a while now, and this week a certification hinted that its launch might be imminent. Asus has yet to officially announce anything about the phone, but thanks to a new leak, we now have the official images and specs of it, leaving little to the imagination.

Asus ROG Phone 9 Specifications

From the leaked images, the ROG Phone 9 FE appears to share a similar design to the ROG Phone 9 Pro. It’s expected to be available in at least one color option: Phantom Black. The phone will reportedly be 8.9mm thin, weighs 225g, and retains the signature AirTrigger controls for in-game actions.

The display is said to be a 6.78-inch FullHD+ LTPO AMOLED panel with a 165Hz refresh rate that can be boosted to 185Hz in Game Genie mode. The leak also mentions a peak brightness of 2,500 nits (with 1,600 nits in HDR mode) and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection for added durability.

Under the hood, the ROG Phone 9 FE is said to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. It will boot Android 15 and come with a generous 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage.

On the camera front, the ROG Phone 9 FE is rumored to sport a quad-camera system consisting of a 50MP Sony IMX890 primary sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 13MP ultrawide sensor, a 5MP macro sensor, and a 32MP selfie camera.

Potential Specifications

While official details remain scarce, the ROG Phone 9 FE may feature similar to the ROG Phone 8 features as the ROG Phone 8, due to the similarities in their model numbers (ROG Phone 8 has AI2501C model number). With that in mind, we can expect the ROG Phone 9 FE to arrive with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, rather than the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip which powers the rest of the ROG Phone 9 lineup. This suggests the FE variant will have slightly reduced performance to offer a more budget-friendly price point.

Key Features

Asus is likely to retain signature ROG Phone features in the FE model, such as the AirTrigger button, AeroActive cooling accessories, and advanced heat dissipation systems. It will be interesting to see if the device ends up getting the Anime vision display on the back or not. If it does end up being an exact copy of the ROG Phone 8, then we can expect the device to come with the following specifications.

ROG Phone 8 features

ROG Phone 8

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 features a 6.78-inch FHD+ Samsung E6 AMOLED display with a 1-165Hz refresh rate, 2500 nits peak brightness, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. The camera setup includes a 50MP Sony IMX890 sensor with gimbal stabilization, a 13MP ultra-wide lens, a 32MP telephoto lens with OIS, and a 32MP front camera.

It has a 5500mAh battery with 65W HyperCharge and 15W wireless charging. For connectivity, the device has Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and NFC. As for protection against the element, it comes with an IP68 water resistance certification.

Asus has established a solid place for itself in the field of gaming phones with the ROG Phone series.
Asus ROG Phone 9 FE appeared with the model number “ASUS_AI2401_N”. We don’t know the specifications of the model yet. However, the ROG Phone 9 FE’s model number is similar to the Asus ROG Phone 8 series, which was introduced earlier this year.
Asus’ ROG Phone series has always stood out for its unique designs and gamer-friendly features. The ROG Phone 9 FE is sure to have a unique design as well. In particular, details such as RGB lighting and trigger buttons could be among the highlights of the device.

On the display side, a large screen with a high refresh rate is likely to be used. This will increase fluidity during gameplay, while the high touch sampling rate will allow for more precise control in games. This kind of display could offer an advantage to gamers, especially in competitive games.

In terms of hardware, judging from the model number, the Asus ROG Phone 9 FE is likely to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. While delivering top-end performance, the device is expected to be equipped with an effective cooling system for long gaming sessions. There is also a possibility that this cooling system can be further enhanced with external accessories.

A phone with such a powerful processor will need a large battery for long gaming sessions. For this reason, the ROG Phone 9 FE is expected to come with a high-capacity battery with fast charging support. This will allow gamers to enjoy an uninterrupted experience for long periods of time. Although ROG Phone 9 FE is a price-performance-oriented model, this device is a candidate to attract a lot of attention by offering high-end gaming performance at an affordable price.
