Motorola Defy 5G to launch soon with satellite messaging feature

Motorola is apparently gearing up to launch a new smartphone, but it isn’t like its usual offering. The Defy 5G is a rugged smartphone that is being built in collaboration with another brand and will offer a unique system for satellite messaging. Here are all the details.

The company is partnering with British phone maker Bullitt Group to build this new rugged phone. Interestingly enough, this firm has also worked with CAT for their rugged phones as well. Last year, it had announced that it has plans to launch the world’s first smartphone that will feature a two way satellite messaging. This device in question will be the Motorola Defy 5G. Bullitt has been developing this technology by working with the a known chipmaker and a satellite network infrastructure partner for the past two years.

This will enable the upcoming handset to seamlessly switch between cellular, WiFi, and satellite connectivity. The feature is dubbed as the Bullitt Satellite Connect and is a collaborative effort with Bullitt, MediaTek, and Skylo. If the device can’t connect via a WiFi or a cellular as usual, Bullitt’s messaging system will connect through a satellite. Notably, anyone on the receiving end will get a regular SMS on their phones and can even respond by using the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app.

While finer details are not known, Bullitt stated that “the cost of the messages will be deducted from the satellite messaging subscriber’s plan with no cost to the recipient.” The subscription plans to start from as low as 4.99 US Dollars per month and the SOS Assistance but will be free for the first year. The Motorola Defy 5G rugged phone’s pricing is also unclear right now, but the announcement is likely to be sometime in the first quarter of 2023.

Earlier this year, we had reported on Motorola launching a new rugged smartphone that will not be built by Lenovo and rather is made by Bullitt Group. Now, a new report has revealed that the new rugged device will arrive soon with a large 5,000mAh battery pack and Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 SoC.

According to a DealNTech report, the UK based smartphone maker Bullitt Group will be making the rugged smartphones for Motorola. The report added that this rugged handset will be launching in the market soon. This device will be backed by a large 5,000mAh battery pack, which will support 20W fast charging as well. Under the hood, the device will house the 11nm Snapdragon 662 SoC along with Adreno 610 GPU.

Unfortunately, finer details regarding the device are currently unknown. Furthermore, it is also unclear when exactly the smartphone maker will be launching the new handset. Although, this marks the first rugged smartphone built by Bullitt Group using trademarks and logos owned by Motorola Trademark Holdings. Thus, we can expect more information to surface sometime in the next few weeks. Lenovo is known as the only manufacturer that makes Motorola-branded smartphones but that is about to change as another manufacturer is about to begin churning out Motorola phones too. These new phones will be rugged phones and they will be made by Bullitt Group.

Bullitt Group, the company behind CAT phones will soon begin making Motorola-branded rugged phones

Bullitt Group is a phone and consumer-electronics company based in the UK and they are known as the manufacturer behind the CAT line of rugged phones. The CAT phones are made under the license of the American engineering giant, Caterpillar Inc. The UK company also manufactures phones under the Land Rover brand and are the ones that made the 2016 Kodak Ectra Camera Phone. Now Bullitt is ready to add Motorola-branded rugged phones to the products it makes.

This is a unique strategic alliance, as it allows Bullitt to apply its expertise to the Motorola portfolio of products. – Dave Floyd, Bullitt Co-Founder

According to Bullitt, this is a “long-term global strategic brand partnership to develop and market rugged mobile phones bearing the iconic Motorola brand”. The manufacturer says that more details of the Motorola rugged mobile phones will be announced this quarter.

We expect the first set of phones to launch this year and we expect them to run the Android operating system. We also expect models that support both 4G and 5G networks from the manufacturer.

Rugged smartphones are pretty popular amongst essential workers such as first responders, construction workers, and those in the health industry. These phones are designed to take a beating and will survive drops, work in extreme temperatures, and also have glove mode support. Some rugged phones even have special features such as thermal cameras and temperature sensors.
