Xiaomi, which is now the world’s third-largest smartphone manufacturer, continues to grow its footprints. As per a new report from Strategy Analytics, Xiaomi smartphone shipments in Chile grew by over 1000 percent.

The report adds that shipments of Xiaomi from near-zero in Q1 2020 to a record 0.5 million units during Q1 2021. The company surged from 2 percent to 16 percent market share during the past year.

The rise is mostly due to the strong presence of the Redmi smartphone models, which helped Xiaomi secure third place in the Chile smartphone market share. Also the pullout of Huawei helped Xiaomi grow in the market.

The report adds that if Xiaomi’s growth continues, then the brand will soon become the second-largest smartphone brand in Chile before the end of this year, overtaking the Lenovo-Motorola brand.

Smartphone shipments in Chile jumped 71 percent Year-on-Year from 1.7 million units during Q1 2020 to a record 2.9 million in Q1 2021, despite COVID-19 and political uncertainty. This is being attributed to a buoyant economy, strong exports, and a perceived high vaccination rate. Chile is the third-largest smartphone market in Latin America, after Brazil and Mexico.

Samsung’s market share in Chile grew 63 percent YoY from 0.8 million in Q1 2020 to 1.2 million units in Q1 2021. Samsung’s smartphone market share in Chile remains relatively stable for now, around 42 percent. Lenovo-Motorola holds second place and grew its smartphone market share from 12 percent during Q1 2020 to 17 percent in Q1 2021.

The company has been expanding its footprint globally and has announced that it has entered two new markets — Chile and Colombia. OPPO had entered the Latin America market last year, starting with the Mexican market.

OPPO has also established partnerships with more than 80 operators, including América Móvil, Vodafone, KDDI Telecom (KDDI), and Softbank.

Comming on this expansion, Zhang Xiaoke, OPPO’s overseas sales director, said: “Latin America has a vital position in OPPO’s global business layout, with advanced mobile Internet development and a relatively high penetration rate of smartphones. OPPO is very pleased to be able to enter Chile and Colombia. The market brings innovative and technological achievements to local consumers and partners.”

The 250-square-meter place offers smartphones, wearable devices, smart home supplies and other Xiaomi products. According to Xinhua, the store managed to get 1,500 customers in its first day! Very impressive all things considered.

The Chilean store was mainly another part of Xiaomi’s ongoing global expansion plan. The company began operations in Chile on December 2018, and they’ve been going strong since then. It’s not inaccurate to say that they’ve been doing well in the country, and this store is proof of that.

Editor’s Pick: Xiaomi patents phone with an in-display selfie camera

“Our users don’t just buy products; they become part of a global community. Common interests unite us, and we care about taking care of that relationship, as if it were with close friends,” said Felipe Villalobos, a social media manager with Xiaomi Chile.

One month later, Xiaomi now has 130 products available in Chile, including cellphones, security cameras, computers, robot vacuums, bicycles, electric scooters, and accessories. The company’s expansion over in Chile has been nothing if not impressive. The Latin American market is crucial and attractive for the brand – especially Chile, “a country that tends to adopt new technologies very rapidly”, a brand communication said.

As of now, Xiaomi plans to open six more physical stores in the country with their all their latest devices. On top of this, the company also wants to introduce the Mi Home ecosystem to Chile soon, which will be quite exciting to see. Xiaomi is taking an aggressive approach to expansion, and it’ll be interesting to see how it pans out for them.
