<p>MediaTek Dimensity 8400-Ultra is here, rocking all big core configurations for its CPU. In fact, this is the first upper mid-range SoC to have such a CPU configuration. MediaTek was also the first to release a flagship Android chip with all big CPU cores, and that was Dimensity 9300.</p>

<p>The first device featuring Dimensity 8400-Ultra is out, and that is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/01/02/redmi-turbo-4-debuts-dimensity-8400-ultra/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Redmi Turbo 4</a>. This chip is nothing but the Dimensity 8400 with several tweaks made by Xiaomi. The benchmarking numbers look strong, putting it in close competition with the popular Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8s Gen 3.</p>

<p>MediaTek claims big upgrades for the Dimensity 8400-Ultra over its predecessor, but are those enough to put it ahead of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3? Let’s compare them to see how the two chips stack up against each other.</p>

<h2>MediaTek Dimensity 8400-Ultra vs Snapdragon 8s Gen 3</h2>

<h3>CPU comparison</h3>

<p>Both the Dimensity 8400-Ultra and Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 are manufactured by TSMC using its 4nm process node. However, the CPU architectures have notable differences.</p>

<p>The Dimensity 8400-Ultra has all Cortex-A725 cores. One of them runs at 3.25GHz, three of them run at 3GHz, and the remaining four at 2.1GHz. The SD 8s Gen 3’s CPU architecture consists of one Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3GHz, four Cortex-A720 cores at 2.8GHz, and three Cortex-A520 cores at 2GHz.</p>

<p>The Cortex-X4 inside the Dimensity 8400-Ultra’s CPU is more powerful than the Cortex-A725, but then it runs at a lower clock speed. The remaining seven cores in the Dimensity chip are more powerful and power-efficient and run at higher clock speeds than those in the SD 8s Gen 3.</p>

<h3>GPU comparison</h3>

<p>Both chips have high-performance GPUs to satisfy the users’ gaming needs. The Dimensity 8400-Ultra has a Mali-G720 MP7 GPU, whereas the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 has an Adreno 735 GPU.</p>

<p>We’ve run different benchmarks and put the results in the benchmark comparison section below, which provides better clarity about the performance.</p>

<h3>Other comparisons</h3>

<p>The two chips can handle on-device AI tasks, thanks to a hexagon NPU in the 8s Gen 3 and MediaTek NPU 980 inside the Dimensity 8400.</p>

<p>Both support LPDDR5X and UFS 4.0 and support all connectivity features, although there are some differences. For example, the Dimensity 8400-Ultra chip supports Wi-Fi 6, but the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 supports a newer Wi-Fi 7 standard. However, it’s the opposite for Bluetooth; v5.4 on the 8s Gen 3 and v6 on Dimensity 8400-Ultra.</p>

<p>The Dimensity chip has a peak download speed of 5.1Gbps, while the Snapdragon chip peaks at 6.5Gbps. They also vary in terms of camera resolution, with the Snapdragon chip peaking at 200MP, while the Dimensity 8400-Ultra supports 320MP.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>MediaTek’s Dimensity 8400 Ultra was announced in December 2024 as the world’s first all big core chip for the upper mid-range smartphone segment. It’s a powerful chip that brings strong multi-core performance and stands tough against premium chips like the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. We’ve compared the two chipsets in<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/01/08/dimensity-8400-ultra-vs-snapdragon-8s-gen-3/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> this article</a>.</p>

<p>All big core CPU design serves the higher performance needs of users than other chipsets. This is not the first of its kind chip from MediaTek. The flagship Dimensity 9400 also features all big CPU cores, and now it’s time for the mid-range segment.</p>

<p>Let’s look at the Dimensity 8400 Ultra’s performance on popular benchmarking tools, including AnTuTu and Geekbench.</p>

<h2>MediaTek Dimensity 8400 Ultra Benchmarks</h2>

[<strong>Note:</strong> We performed these benchmark tests on the Poco X7 Pro. Results may vary slightly from device to device because of software optimizations, cooling systems, etc.]

<h3>Dimensity 8400 Ultra AnTuTu score</h3>

<p>AnTuTu is a popular benchmarking tool to assess different aspects of a device, such as CPU, GPU, memory, and UX performance. The AnTuTu score represents the addition of all values.</p>

<p>On AnTuTu v10, the Dimensity 8400 Ultra has scored 1,590,202 AnTuTu points. That’s an impressive score for a mid-range chipset.</p>

<div><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-AnTuTu-score-1024x683.png?x44794" class="td-modal-image"><figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-AnTuTu-score-1024x683.png?x44794" alt="Dimensity 8400 Ultra AnTuTu score" class="wp-image-668433" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-AnTuTu-score-1024x683.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-AnTuTu-score-300x200.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-AnTuTu-score-768x512.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-AnTuTu-score-696x464.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-AnTuTu-score-1068x712.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-AnTuTu-score-630x420.png 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-AnTuTu-score.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></a></div>

<p>The Dimensity 8400 Ultra beats the popular Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 chipset and even the flagship Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. The data looks impressive.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table is-style-regular" style="font-size:13px"><table class="has-black-color has-text-color has-background" style="background-color:#e7ecec"><thead><tr><th></th><th>AnTuTu score</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Poco X7 Pro (D-8400 Ultra)</td><td>1,590,202</td></tr><tr><td>Poco F6 (SD 8s Gen 3)</td><td>1,509,243</td></tr><tr><td>Redmi Note 14 Pro+ (SD 7s Gen 3)</td><td>725,812</td></tr><tr><td>Realme GT 6T (SD 7+ Gen 3)</td><td>1,448,726</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p>Here’s the breakdown of Dimensity 8400 Ultra AnTutu score:</p>

<ul><li>Total AnTuTu score: 1,590,202<ul><li>CPU: 370,994</li><li>GPU: 567,384</li><li>Memory: 329,331</li><li>UX: 322,493</li></ul></li></ul>

<h3>Geekbench score</h3>

<p>Geekbench evaluates a device’s performance through a series of tests designed around practical scenarios. The tests include image processing, compression (text &amp; image), speech recognition, PDF rendering, and more.</p>

<div><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-Geekbench-score-1-1024x683.png?x44794" class="td-modal-image"><figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-Geekbench-score-1-1024x683.png?x44794" alt="Dimensity 8400 Ultra Geekbench score" class="wp-image-668434" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-Geekbench-score-1-1024x683.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-Geekbench-score-1-300x200.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-Geekbench-score-1-768x512.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-Geekbench-score-1-696x464.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-Geekbench-score-1-1068x712.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-Geekbench-score-1-630x420.png 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Dimensity-8400-Ultra-Geekbench-score-1.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></a></div>

<p>On Geekbench v6, the Dimensity 8400 Ultra gets 1,579 single-core points, which is pretty average among mid-range chipsets, but the score significantly jumps to 6,238 in the multi-core test, and that’s because of all big CPU cores.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table is-style-regular" style="font-size:13px"><table class="has-black-color has-text-color has-background" style="background-color:#e7ecec"><thead><tr><th></th><th>Single core</th><th>Multi core</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Poco X7 Pro (D-8400 Ultra)</td><td>1,579</td><td>6,238</td></tr><tr><td>Poco F6 (SD 8s Gen 3)</td><td>1,857</td><td>5,034</td></tr><tr><td>Redmi Note 14 Pro+ (SD 7s Gen 3)</td><td>1,193</td><td>3,234</td></tr><tr><td>Realme GT 6T (SD 7+ Gen 3)</td><td>1,924</td><td>4,571</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p>While the Dimensity 8400 Ultra’s single-core performance is just like any of its competitors, the multi-core performance makes a real difference, where the Dimensity 8400 Ultra takes a good lead.</p>

<h3>3D Mark WildLife Extreme Stress Test</h3>

<p>3D Mark is a popular benchmark tool to test the gaming performance of a device/chip. The WildLife Extreme Stress test evaluates the performance under sustained heavy loads.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table is-style-regular" style="font-size:13px"><table class="has-black-color has-text-color has-background" style="background-color:#e7ecec"><thead><tr><th></th><th>Overall score</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Poco X7 Pro (D-8400 Ultra)</td><td>4,086</td></tr><tr><td>Poco F6 (SD 8s Gen 3)</td><td>2,823</td></tr><tr><td>Redmi Note 14 Pro+ (SD 7s Gen 3)</td><td>3,087</td></tr><tr><td>Realme GT 6T (SD 7+ Gen 3)</td><td>2,737</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p>Here, the Poco X7 Pro rocking the Dimensity 8400 Ultra did a better job than its peers, suggesting strong GPU performance. So, you’ll most likely have a better gaming experience with the Dimensity 8400 Ultra than most mid-range chips. However, that also depends on software optimizations, cooling techniques, and more.</p>
