Just yesterday, a video showing a Huawei Mate 40 Pro model running the firm’s self-developed HarmonyOS 2.0. The demo video details the features and functionalities of Huawei’s homegrown operating system. The development of the HarmonyOS was fast-tracked with the US blacklisting of Huawei that prevented the Chinese tech powerhouse from accessing important software and hardware components from its US suppliers.

Yet another video has appeared online showing a comparison between a phone running on HarmonyOS 2.0 and another running on the Android 11-based EMUI 11. The comparison is between the Developer Beta3 version of HarmonyOS 2.0 and the current stable firmware of EMUI 11. The video highlights the features and some performance metrics of both operating systems.

In terms of speed, the video showed that the HarmonyOS was a bit slower than EMUI 11 as per the app loading time. This may not be a definitive indicator that the EMUI 11 was faster. There could be several reasons. The speed test was also conducted in two different phone models, and it is impossible to situate the differences in their app loading times under such a scenario.

It is therefore difficult to compare the performance of the two operating systems because we do not have the stable build of the HarmonyOS and the use of separate phone models for the performance test.

Huawei plans to ultimately deploy HarmonyOS to most of its products in the coming years. It hopes to begin featuring the operating system in its new products within a few months. We, therefore, expect a stable build version very soon.

The most visible change in the HarmonyOS is a new control center, with a search engine at the top left corner, while a swipe-down gesture anywhere on the screen reveals the notifications.

Huawei’s ex-sister brand HONOR had already confirmed that the older devices will continue to receive the software updates as planned. Accordingly, the HONOR 20 series and V20 are now getting the Magic UI 4.0 global stable update.

If you recall, the stable update has already been rolled out to these devices in China. Now, the global variants of the HONOR 20, HONOR 20 Pro, and HONOR V20 are getting the Magic UI 4.0 global stable version. Carrying the build with firmware version 11.0.0.138, an OTA update weighing about 1.84GB in size is rolling out.

This software version is based on the EMUI 11 which is in turn an Android 10-based UI without GMS. Huawei unveiled the EMUI 11 back in September 2020. Due to the tussle with the US, the company couldn’t incorporate the latest Android 11 as Google was barred from working with the Chinese giant.

That said, the UI still had improved features like Photo sharing Privacy, Gallery, ringtones, UI animation, multiwindow mode, and more. The Magic UI 4.0, which is based on this, also has the relevant features and if you are having one of the devices mentioned above, you can expect the following features to land on your device:

Recently, Huawei has been rolling out the stable updates of the EMUI 11 Globally for many of its devices. The 2019 P30 series of flagships recently got the update and now is the turn of the Huawei Nova 5T.

Courtesy of Huawei Central, the Chinese giant is rolling out a new update to the HUAWEI Nova 5T. This update has the firmware version EMUI 11.0.0.138 and weighs 1.94GB in size. Accordingly, the device gets upgraded to the latest EMUI 11.

Huawei has lived up to the promise of upgrading the devices promptly despite an ongoing tussle with the US. The Nova 5T was supposed to receive it sometime in Q1 2021 and it has finally got the update. If you don’t know, this is the second major EMUI update for the device.

To recall, Huawei launched the Nova 5T back in August 2019. The device came with EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9 Pie. Thanks to the company’s swift action, it got the first major update to EMUI 10 in 2020.

Coming back, this update includes the usual All Scenario Concept of EMUI 11 and brings updates to NotePad & Photo sharing Privacy, Gallery, ringtones, UI animation, multiwindow mode, and more. You can check out over coverage on the EMUI 11 to know about the entire list of features.

The UI is still based on Android 10 and has access to the Huawei Mobile Services(HMS) instead of GMS. Huawei has already announced the plan of updating the flagships to its HarmonyOS and one of the first to get it will be the HUAWEI Mate X2.

Earlier today (1st March 2021), the official Weibo account, a Chinese micrblogging website, of Huawei EMUI officially shared that the company has successfully brought over more than 100 million users to its latest EMUI 11 OS, with “the next stop” being HarmonyOS (AKA HongMengOS in China).

On the social media post, the Chinese tech giant shared the news and also showcased its quick update cycle for its latest custom skin, which is based on the vanilla Android OS. For those unaware, EMUI 11 was first announced at the Huawei Develop Conference (HDC) 2020, in September, where it was showcased for its smart multi window and multi screen support, along with a more optimized UI and other improved functionalities as well.

Recently, it had rumored that the company has already begun bringing HarmonyOS to its devices, which would also mark the halting of any major development for the EMUI 11 paltform. In other words, EMUI 11 will effectively be the last version of the custom skin. It was previously rumored that the process will not be immediate as the smartphone manufacturer aimed to transition the EMUI 11 enabled devices to HarmonyOS through EMUI 11.1, which will replace the kernel with the proprietary operating system.

But as per ITHome, the company will be directly upgrading devices to HarmonyOS. For those unaware, the new OS is the company’s self developed platform, which was first announced back in 2019 after it faced a trade ban by the US government. At the moment, the brand aims on bringing this OS to more than just smartphones, in IoT devices and larger screened products as well, to add cross platform integration as well.

HUAWEI unveiled EMUI 11 at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2020 in September. Due to the US ban, the underlying Android version is still 10 but it brings some new useful features.

The firm has been delivering beta and stable builds of EMUI 11 worldwide since its announcement. Following the official timeline, the company has now finally started pushing the stable update to HUAWEI P30 and HUAWEI P30 Pro in global markets.

As per Huawei Central, the update for this duo comes with build number EMUI 11.0.0.138. Interestingly, it weighs only 1.81GB, just like the build that is being rolled out for the HUAWEI Mate 20 series (Mate20, Mate20 Pro, Mate20 X).

That said, the EMUI 11 Global Stable update for the HUAWEI P30 series is currently being seeded out in batches worldwide. Hence, it may take time to reach your unit.

Anyway, you can navigate to Settings > System & updates > Software update > Check for updates to check whether your device has received the OTA update. Optionally, interested users can update from the Support app by heading over to the Service tab > update > Check for updates > download and install.

Since then, the company has been seeding out beta as well as stable builds for the eligible smartphones and tablets worldwide. Now, five months after the software’s official announcement, it is finally being rolled out to the global variants of the HUAWEI Mate20 series in stable form.

According to Huawei Central, the Chinese telecom giant has finally started delivering EMUI 11 stable update for the global variants of the following HUAWEI Mate20 series models.

• HUAWEI Mate20
• HUAWEI Mate20 Pro
• HUAWEI Mate20 X

The update for the above-listed devices comes with build number EMUI 11.0.0.138. Interestingly, the OTA file only weighs 1.86GB in size for all three handsets. Anyway, it is worth noting that the update is being rolled out in batches. Therefore, it may take time to reach every region. 

Also, as per the timeline, even the company’s first 5G smartphone, HUAWEI Mate20 X 5G is scheduled to get the update along with other models in the series. Although it hasn’t received it now, it should get it soon as the firm has already rolled out this update for the Chinese variant earlier this month.

Chinese telecom giant HUAWEI announced EMUI 11 at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2020 in September. Since then, the company has been running beta programs for eligible devices worldwide. One of those phones is HUAWEI Mate20 X 5G, which began to receive Open Beta updates in late December. Now, a little over a month later, it has started getting the stable update.

The HUAWEI Mate20 X 5G launched in late July 2019 as the company’s first 5G smartphone. It debuted with EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9.0 Pie. But was later updated to Android 10-based EMUI 10 and EMUI 10.1.

This handset has now begun to receive its second major update in the form of EMUI 11, which unfortunately is also based on Android 10. Nevertheless, it does bring new features and UI tweaks.

That said, currently, the update is only live for the Chinese variant of this smartphone with build number 11.0.0.130. According to Huawei Central, the EMUI 11 stable release for HUAWEI Mate20 X 5G is available for users on both beta and stable channels.

As for global markets, this phone is scheduled to get the update in Q1 2021. Hence, we can expect the firm to roll out the build by the end of March.

It’s worth noting that the devices above have already got the closed Beta of the EMUI 11 and Magic UI 4.0 respectively. Interestingly, they are powered by Huawei’s Kirin 980 SoC that is two years old.

Despite being a very old CPU, it is built on the 7nm process which still other companies use on their chipsets. And it is the world’s first 7nm chipset with dedicated NPUs(Neural Processing Unit). Besides, it is good to see Huawei updating older chipsets despite missing Android 11 features and Google Mobile Services due to the US ban.

Anyway, the current Beta is for the Chinese market and as usual, users will have to go to the Huawei Club to sign up for it. Precisely, you can follow the steps below to get the latest update:

Huawei had released the EMUI 11 update earlier this year, which is based on the Android 10 operating system from Google. After rolling out the update to its current-generation flagship devices, the company has now started rolling it out to more users.

The latest EMUI 11 update is now being available for the Huawei Mate 30 series devices, including the Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro, and Mate 30 RS Porsche Design. However, first, the update is being rolled out to those users who registered for the beta testing.

Huawei is going through tough times but that did not stop the company from unveiling EMUI 11, the latest version of its mobile software. The Chinese telecom giant announced it at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2020 on September 10. Since then, it has been releasing beta as well as stable builds for eligible devices worldwide. Now, within three months from its announcement, the company has already hit a milestone.

According to the official Weibo account of EMUI, over 10 million users are on  EMUI 11 in less than three months from the day of its unveiling. Since the company did not mention whether this count only includes those users who are on stable build, we believe this is the total count of stable, closed beta, and open beta users combined.

As per the official list of eligible devices, a total of 28 HUAWEI-branded smartphones and tablets will be receiving EMUI 11 update in China . For global markets, this number drops to 19. Some of these devices have already got the stable update.

Having said that, we are still puzzled if this 10 million+ count also includes HONOR devices running Magic UI 4.0, which is nothing but a fork of EMUI 11. That’s because EMUI’s Weibo post is vague without detailed information.

Normally, Huawei’s smartphone and tablet user base includes numbers from HONOR as well since it was a sub-brand of the company up until recently. But now, as the brand has been sold off to Zhixin New Information Technology Co. Ltd, the EMUI 11 user count shared by the Chinese tech giant could be devoid of HONOR devices.

Chinese tech powerhouse Huawei has just commenced the rollout of its EMUI 11 stable for the Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and the Mate 30 Pro, respectively. A screenshot of the update was posted by the Turkish blog Huawei Ailesi. Though the changelog is in Turkish, we can see some of the notable updates, which are not too different from what has been available on the Beta version.

The most notable changes are certainly the subtle ones that further signify Huawei’s reliance on Android is a switch to Huawei’s Harmony OS. For example, in the boot-up screen, the EMUI splash display still comes up with the statement “Powered by Android” but has now jettisoned the green Android logo previously seen on start up.

The other important change is in the wording of the security patch level, which now gives the statement “Security patch level” thereby leaving out the word ‘Android’, as was the case previously.

Some new air gestures that were introduced on the Huawei Mate 40 series have now been extended to the P30 with the present update. Also, there is now a new EMUI theme called ‘Starry Night’ that is now available in all the stated models.

The update has version number 11.0.0.151 and will take up around 1.1 GB of memory space. With the subsisting US embargo on Huawei and its subsequent inability to secure a Google Services license, EMUI 11 is expected to be the last version of “Android” for this set of Huawei smartphones, and the first release of Harmony OS is set to be its successor. EMUI 11 lays the groundwork for some of the Huawei brand’s most popular smartphones to be updated to Huawei’s new Google-free OS.

Last year, Xiaomi introduced a useful feature called ‘Earthquake Warning’ with the release of MIUI 11. This feature is limited to the Sichuan province of China as this region is known for multiple earthquakes for centuries. Now, China’s largest smartphone brand HUAWEI has also implemented a similar feature in EMUI 11, the latest version of its mobile operating system.

EMUI 11 was officially unveiled at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2020 in September. Though the company’s latest mobile software is still based on Android 10 just like EMUI 10.1 and EMUI 10, it brings a host of new features and functionalities. 

Also, the firm has even promised to add some select Android 11 features before updating the eligible devices to HarmonOS next year.

But now, as Huawei has begun to roll out EMUI 11 stable builds, users in China started sharing the presence of the ‘Earthquake Warning’ feature on Weibo. According to ITHome, as we mentioned in the beginning, this feature is limited to users in Sichuan province.

It can be enabled from Settings > Security > Emergency Warning Notification > Earthquake Warning. When this feature is turned on, the phone will notify the user whenever there is an earthquake nearby.

Similarly, EMUI 11 also brings another unique feature called ‘Video Alarm’. This enables users to video call the police in the event of an emergency. Currently, this feature is limited to the Guangdong Province.

Having said that, with Huawei’s popularity and user base, we expect these two features to make their way to more regions across China in the coming months.

Now, weeks later, the last device in the list has become the first to get EMUI 11 stable in international markets.

The information regarding the availability of this update was shared by Twitter user @RODENT950 (via XDA Developers), who is known for his HUAWEI and HONOR-related leaks.

The latest system update for HUAWEI Mate30 Pro brings all the new features of EMUI 11 as it is a flagship smartphone. However, the update does not bump up the Android version to 11. That’s because EMUI 11 is based on Android 10 just like EMUI 10 and EMUI 10.1 before it.

Anyway, Huawei has promised to bring select Android 11 features to the EMUI 11 eligible devices before upgrading them to HarmonyOS next year.

Last week, Huawei shared EMUI 11.0 and Magic UI 4.0 update timeline for eligible devices. Based on that, the company has started rolling out the stable update to the first batch of devices consisting of models from the HUAWEI P40 series and the HUAWEI Mate30 series.

As per the roadmap released by Huawei, a total of 10 devices should receive EMUI 11 stable update in early November. But however, the company has begun to seed the builds only for 8 devices leaving out the two tablets – HUAWEI MatePad Pro and HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G.

That means the EMUI 11 stable update is currently live for the following devices.

• HUAWEI Mate30

Having said that, the update is currently limited to China only. Above all, even in the company’s home country, it is only available for certain users. That’s because the builds are being pushed in batches. Also, if the user is already running the latest open beta release, then they have a high chance of getting the update first.

Anyway, Huawei is yet to release EMUI 11 and Magic UI 4.0 rollout schedule for international markets although beta testing has begun for select high-end smartphones in certain regions.

In September, Huawei officially announced EMUI 11, the latest version of its mobile operating system based on Android 10 at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE. Since then, the company has been rolling out beta releases to certain devices across the world. Now, more than a month later, the Chinese telecom giant has finally confirmed eligible devices as well as shared the update roadmap/timeline for its home country.

Like any Chinese smartphone maker, Huawei always releases the latest software update first in its homeland China. The same is the case for EMUI 11. As per the company, a total of 37 HUAWEI and HONOR branded smartphones and tablets will be updated. 

That said, it is worth noting that this update comes as Magic UI 4.0 for HONOR smartphones, which is nothing but EMUI 11 with some minor tweaks. Also, the roadmap shared by the company not only includes the timeline for stable rollout but also closed and open beta.

Huawei’s EMUI 11 is based on Android 10 and not Android 11. That is no surprise based on the manufacturer’s current predicament. However, the tech giant is working on its own operating system too called HongMeng OS/Harmony OS and it turns out that the new OS is linked to EMUI 11, and the latter may be the end of EMUI before the transition to HongMeng OS.

According to a post by the Chinese blog, Mydrivers, Wang Chenglu, the head of the software department of Huawei Consumer Business Group, revealed EMUI 11 shares some features with Hongmeng as part of HongMeng’s framework. In simpler terms, there seems to be a partial transitioning going on already.

Huawei plans to launch phones powered by HongMeng OS in the second half of next year, and there are speculations there will be no need for EMUI to exist anymore, making EMUI 11 the last version. This makes sense seeing as Huawei is making a switch to a new OS next year, so there is no sense in developing EMUI 12.

A beta version of HongMeng OS will be available for eligible devices to test later this year and it has been reported that some of those devices will include its high-end tablets. Huawei has also revealed that devices running EMUI 11 will be the first to get the upgrade to HongMeng OS.

The Huawei Mate 40 series’ launch conference is just around the corner. These smartphones will be the company’s latest flagship, but just prior to their October 22 launch, a new leak has revealed the themes of the lineup and also some information regarding EMUI 11. 

According to an ITHome report, the Huawei Mate 40 series will feature multiple themes which include Starry Night (based on the famous work from Van Gogh), Midsummer Fireworks, Eyes of the Universe, and many more. Furthermore, EMUI will also bring a new “Dual Dynamic Icon” feature with the upcoming premium grade flagships.

As per the report, these are meant to be high definition art based themes that are also optimized for the always on display. The new devices will also feature improvement in the software and UI aspects, with the smart multi window offering better multi tasking, floating notifications, and quick reply options as well.

Unfortunately, it is currently unknown what exactly the “Dual Dynamic Icon” actually is, but going by its name, it’s likely a more dynamic icon pack for the apps provided by Huawei. In other words, the icons might have two layers, which could be supplemented by a simple animation that also reflects on the application’s functionality.

Huawei has already confirmed that the company will be launching its next-generation Mate-series flagship smartphones — Huawei Mate 40 lineup on 22nd October. Now, as the launch date nears, more and more details about the phones keep surfacing online.

In the latest development, a few images of the upcoming Mate 40 Pro smartphone’s user interface have leaked online. The photos confirm some of the phone’s specifications and features that have been previously leaked or rumored.

The leaked screenshots confirm that the Mate 40 pro will come powered by the company’s own Kirin 9000 SoC. The company’s executive has already confirmed this and it could also be Huawei’s last flagship chipset, at least for the time being due to new sanctions imposed on the company by the United States.

It is also confirmed that the device will be running the EMUI 11 custom user interface, which is based on the Android 10 operating system but without the support for Google Mobile Services. Instead, the device will likely have Huawei Mobile Service. It’s noteworthy that Android 11 has already been launched but since Google started uploading the open-source code last month, Huawei didn’t get enough time to upgrade the software.

As for other details, the leaked images confirm 2772 x 1344 pixels screen resolution, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of internal storage. The leaked render image of the phone also showcases a circular camera setup on the back and a dual punch-hole cutout on the front.

A recent leak indicates a 50MP triple camera system on the back, along with 20MP ultra-wide lens, and a 12MP telephoto zoom camera. It will have 5x optical zoom and support for 8K video recording. On the front, there will be a 13MP primary sensor and a 3D sensor.

The phone supports Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and Wi-Fi 6 in terms of connectivity. It reportedly packs a 4,400mAh battery with support for 65W fast wired charging via a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port that can fully charge the device in under one hour.

Huawei announced EMUI 11 as the latest version of its mobile operating system earlier this month at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE (HDC) 2020. At the very same day, the company started rolling out the beta updates to 10 of its devices in China. A few days later, 9 more devices were added to the program as the company promised. Now, the firm has opened beta registrations for two more devices namely HUAWEI Mate Xs and HUAWEI MatePad 10.8.

The first batch of EMUI 11 Beta  initiative included the entire P40 series, Mate30 series, and the MatePad Pro tablet. Whereas, the second batch brought in certain nova7 and nova6 series smartphones as well as some HONOR 30 and V30 series handsets.

Now, the third batch has been announced in China and surprisingly, it only includes two devices. They are HUAWEI Mate Xs (TAH-AN00m), the last foldable form the company and HUAWEI MatePad 10.8 (SCMR-AL09, SCMR-W09).

That said, we expect the Chinese telecom giant to start recruiting beta testers for more devices in the coming days. Above all, we also look forward to seeing more regions added to the global beta program, in addition to new devices apart from the P40 lineup and Mate30 Pro.

Anyway, these are just beta build builds ast the name implies and the stable rollout for the current beta devices may take some more time.

Huawei officially announced EMUI 11 earlier this month at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2020. Initially, the beta builds of the company’s latest mobile software were limited to certain devices in China. Now, the Chinese smartphone maker has begun to recruit beta testers in Germany, Russia, Turkey, and the UK.

EMUI 11 is the ninth iteration of Huawei’s mobile operating system. Unfortunately, it is based on Android 10 due to the US ban. However, the company has promised to bring select Android 11 features to its devices before updating them to HarmonyOS later next year.

That said, the company has rolled out beta builds of the new version of its Android skin to a plethora of devices in its home country China. Thankfully, it has now started beta recruitment for global markets as well.

Currently, the registrations for the EMUI 11 Beta program is live in Germany, Russia, Turkey, and the UK for the following four smartphones.

All the first batch of EMUI 11 Close Beta devices were HUAWEI-branded smartphones and tablets. But the second batch whose closed beta registrations have now gone live in China include 5 HONOR smartphones and 4 HUAWEI smartphones.

HONOR devices run a tweaked version of EMUI called Magic UI. Hence, the EMUI 11 update for eligible HONOR devices will come as Magic UI 4.0. The HONOR devices included in the second batch of closed beta rollout will be the first to get the latest version of Magic UI.

At the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2020, the company unveiled EMUI 11, the latest version of its mobile software. It even released Closed Beta releases  for 10 of its devices. Turns out the builds are based on Android 10 and not Android 11 as expected. Now, the company gives more clarification regarding this.

In two separate statements to Android Authority, Huawei provided some insights into the future of EMUI.

At first, the Chinese telecom giant confirmed that some selected Android 11 features will be incorporated into EMUI 11. Do note that the company only mentioned features. That means the base will probably remain Android 10 like in beta builds.

Due to the US ban, Huawei couldn’t work with Google to develop its new software based on the latest version of Android. The source code of Android 11 was only recently uploaded to the AOSP last week.

In a second statement, the company revealed that devices running EMUI 11, which the firm says to be based on distributed technology will be eligible for upgrade to HarmonyOS in the future.

However, it did not mention the exact models that will be eligible. Also, it is not known whether the HarmonyOS update will be mandatory or optional.

In a nutshell, the future of HUAWEI as well as HONOR-branded smartphones and tablets are confusing to say the least. 

Because if the US ban gets reverted by a new government after the elections, it is a mystery whether the company will stick with Android or it’s very own heavily invested HarmonyOS although the chairman hinted Android several times.

The HUAWEI Mate40 series is expected to be the last smartphones from the company to be powered by its in-house HiSilcion chipset until the US ban lifts. This chip is reported to be manufactured by TSMC’s 5nm node process. Other than the powerful silicon, the forthcoming flagship devices from the Chinese tech giant are also said to bring other high-end features. One of them could be 66W fast charging as hinted in a new EMUI 11 promo video.

Recently, at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2020, the Chinese telecom giant unveiled HarmonyOS 2.0 and EMUI 11. The beta builds for the latter are also live for 10 of the company’s devices.

Huawei also released a number of promo videos for EMUI 11. One of those videos showcased the new charging animation with”Max 66W” text. Currently, none of the HUAWEI or HONOR smartphones/tablets supports it. So it should mostly debut on the forthcoming HUAWEI Mate40 series.

Unfortunately, we could not find this video anywhere on Weibo. Maybe, the company took it down. The above picture is a screengrab from the said video and it was shared by 数码闲聊站 (Digital Chat Station).

A 66W Huawei charger was already spotted at China’s 3C certification bureau in early July. This could be the charger that may come bundled with the Mate40 series.

Huawei recruited users for EMUI 11 closed beta testing in China from September 1 to September 8. Those who got selected have received the build today. Now, the company has extended the recruitment for until September 15 so that more users can try out the new software and share valuable feedback on bugs and features.

Earlier today at HDC (HUAWEI Developer Conference), the Chinese telecom giant announced EMUI 11 alongside HarmonyOS 2.0. The company has even released beta builds for 10 of its devices. However, unlike other OEMs, Huawei’s latest Android skin is based on Android 10 as the firm could not work with Google due to the US ban. Anyway, we can expect future builds to come with Android 11 as the search giant has now released the source code to AOSP.

Now that we have clarity about the Android version, let us take a look at all the new features that EMUI 11 brings to HUAWEI and HONOR devices.

Long-Take Animations

If you have watched the movie 1917, you might be aware that the whole movie looks like it was shot in a single take. This method of filmmaking is known as “long-take” where the screen does not change.

Huawei’s Human-Factors Engineering Research Lab designed the animations of EMUI 11 inspired by the long-take shots used in movies, as explained above. These are subtle animations that take place where the user’s eyesight is focussed by not disturbing the whole screen.

These can be found in certain system applications like Gallery and Calendar to name a few. It’s worth noting that similar animations can be also found in MIUI 12.

New Always On Display

Huawei brought some improvements to Always-on Displays (AOD) in its EMUI 10.1 earlier this year. Now, with EMUI 11, the AOD feature gets another facelift with support for DIY styles and a number of default styles inspired by the work of renowned painter Piet Mondrian. Talking about DIY styles, users can select any image, video or GIF of their choice.

What’s interesting is EMUI 11 AOD now looks and feels exactly like MIUI 12 AOD+. Even their settings page is identical.

Redesigned Gallery App

The stock Gallery app finally adds support for pinch to switch between pictures/videos between day and month view in the “Photos” tab. Whereas, the content in the “Albums” tab is now laid out in 4:3 aspect ratio with new settings to sort photos as XDA Developers points out.

Live Icons

Xiaomi’s MIUI features live icons for certain system apps, which animates when users exit those apps. In MIUI 12, the company even implemented it for quick toggles in the new control center. On the other hand, live icons in EMUI 11 can be not only found in the notification panel but also inside certain system applications such as Phone, Huawei Music, Huawei Notepad, and more.

Multi-Screen Collaboration 3.0 & Smart Multi-Window

With newly introduced Smart Multi-Window feature, users can resize the windows of the floating apps and even switch between different such applications from a dock. On foldables like the company’s Mate X and Mate Xs, users can also open multiple floating apps just like on the Galaxy Z Fold2.

Further, Multi-Screen Collaboration 3.0 brings support to open up to three apps on the connected computer at a time. Users can now attend calls as well as use their device’s camera as a webcam. The new version also adds support to edit the documents stored on the laptop directly from the user’s EMUI device.

Privacy & Security

Just like fellow Chinese Android skins, Huawei’s EMUI 11 also now notifies the usage of camera, microphone, and GPS in the status bar. It also adds an option to share pictures without EXIF data. 

Further, it also brings hidden albums and hidden memos for Gallery and Huawei Notes app respectively. That’s not all, a new Safety Cast feature restrains sensitive content to cast on the user’s output display.

Earlier today (7th September 2020), Huawei officially teased the EMUI 11, the company’s latest custom skin based on Android OS at the Huawei Developers Conference 2020.

On the company’s official Weibo post, a Chinese microblogging website, it was written that “Add wings to imagination, mobile phones are not just mobile phones, what else can they be?” In other words, it teases and hints at something interesting. Huawei has long since been trying to bring its electronic ecosystem to be more seamless and this might be a step in that direction.

This might be indicative of a cross platform support of the upcoming software, or a feature that lets using smart home appliances even more intuitive. Huawei also placed emphasis on handsets being more than just smartphones in the teaser. Although, what exactly the company means is still unclear.

The EMUI 11 is the latest version of the company’s proprietary custom skin. According to Huawei’s consumer business software department president, Wang Chenglu, the software will be more mature in the application of distributed technology and the style and design of the EMUI 11 will be significantly different from the EMUI 10. It is a major update that brings overhauls to the UI design and more. So stay tuned for the launch event.

Huawei is currently rolling out EMUI 10.1 to its smartphones and tablets worldwide. But behind the scenes, the company has been working on EMUI 11 for a few months now. The new version of the firm’s mobile software is confirmed to release in Q3 and could be showcased at IFA 2020. Ahead of it, some of its features have been tipped by a leakster.

EMUI (Magic UI for Honor) is the heart of Huawei Android devices – smartphones and tablets. Heavily inspired by Apple’s iOS, the Chinese telecom giant created an ecosystem of its own with features such as HUAWEI Share, HUAWEI Multi-Screen Collaboration, and more.

With the upcoming EMUI 11, the company is reported to lay the foundation for distributed technology. But it will continue to use Android as the base (Android 11 to be exact) with improved HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) and not HarmonyOS as rumored.

Yesterday, 长安数码君 (Changan Digital King) on Weibo revealed more features of EMU 11. According to him, it will come with a revamped AOD (Always-on) in the design department. For productivity, it is said to feature new smart split-screen and “comprehensive translation services”. We are not sure what the tipster means by the latter part.

Anyway, according to a previous report, only HUAWEI Mate40 Pro will ship with EMUI 11, whereas the regular HUAWEI Mate40 will debut with EMUI 10.x (could be EMUI 10.1). However, the company will update its older devices in the coming months like the previous iterations of the software but don’t expect all the devices to get it.

Since Google is reported to officially release Android 11 on September 8, Huawei may also open registrations for Closed Beta at around the same time or later.

In the weekend, we reported Huawei to be working on a number of products including three smartphones, a foldable, a TWS, and a smartwatch. That leak only exposed the codenames of these upcoming devices and nothing else. Now, the same source reveals the codename of Mate 40 Pro and the software it will launch with.

Huawei has been working on EMUI 11 for a very long time. The existence of it was first sported in early May, just little over a month after the announcement of EMUI 10.1. Now, a new tip by Evan Blass aka @evleaks says Huawei Mate 40 Pro will be the first smartphone to launch with the company’s new software.

According to the popular leakster, the HUAWEI Mate40 Pro is codenamed “Noah”. Unfortunately, he did not mention the codenames of the other three models in the series.

But he did say that only the Pro variant will launch with EMUI 11, whereas the non-Pro will come with EMUI 10.x (EMUI 10.1?). If this happens to be true, then for the first time ever, we will witness the launch of a new HUAWEI Mate series with different software onboard across models.

Nothing else is known about EMUI 11 except for the fact that it will be released in Q3 2020 with distributed technology.

Huawei‘s Consumer Business Software Department president Dr Wang Chenglu earlier this month confirmed that the EMUI 11 will launch in the third quarter of 2020. However, the exec left off without revealing specific features we should look forward to having onboard the next-gen custom ROM. Dr Wang only hinted that EMUI 11 will be based on Distributed technology which would bring improvement to the app performance and user experience.

Huawei Central has published more details of the new Distributed technology which Huawei is expected to unveil with the upcoming custom ROM. The technology will bring smart features and connectivity to apps. The features will also form part of Huawei’s All Scenario experience.

Distributed technology allows users to conduct HD video calls among multiple devices. Users can make audio and video calls whenever and wherever they are. If there is an incoming call, users can choose to answer using a smart speaker.

Or if it is a video call, they can answer through a TV, vehicle-mounted device, or even send a real-time video feed from a drone so that friends and family can also enjoy the beautiful scenery.

At work, a smartphone and computer can share screens so that data can be exchanged easily through drag-and-drop.

The main purpose of distributed technology is to utilize the hardware capabilities such as display, camera, microphone, or speaker of each device. Then allowing users to use these capabilities across different devices providing seamless connectivity.

In addition, Huawei Central says the new EMUI 11 will be based on Android 11 and not HarmonyOS since the company is putting huge efforts in growing its Google Mobile Service alternative – Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) ecosystem. However, there may likely be some HarmonyOS inherited features on the new ROM.

Huawei is expected to take the wraps off the new OS at the Huawei Developer Conference 2020 (HDC 2020) coming up in August or September. The company is also expected to unveil a new version of HarmonyOS for more platforms.

Huawei presently ranks as the number one smartphone maker globally after it beat Samsung to clinch the top spot consecutively in May and June. The popularity of the brand’s mobile phones also means that its custom ROM called EMUI is also popular due to the fact that it runs on millions of devices worldwide. The latest iteration is the EMUI 10.1 which just got released for some models. However, the company have revealed plans for its next major update.

According to Huawei’s Consumer Business Software Department president Dr. Wang Chenglu, EMUI 11 will arrive in the third quarter of this year. He stated this during a special event to mark the eight-year anniversary of the EMUI custom ROM.

The Huawei exec did not specify a date that it would be unveiled but there are speculations that the next-generation custom ROM will be released alongside the Mate 40 series. The flagship series should be the first to have the new EMUI 11 skin onboard.

Going down memory lane, Huawei first introduced EMUI in 2012 as Emotion UI 1.0 and it was based on Android 4.0. Subsequent years have seen new versions get released based on newer Android versions until the latest EMUI 10 released in August last year. The software chief also indicated that the company is making efforts to bring more app developers on board the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) core as a viable alternative to Google’s offering.

EMUI is the official Android skin of Huawei smartphones. It is also known as Magic UI with tweaks on certain Honor devices. EMUI 10.1/Magic UI 3.1 that debuted on the P40 series is the latest version. Now, in an interview, the company’s software head revealed EMUI 11 will be announced in Q3 2020.

Huawei recently held an event on July 4 to celebrate 8th year anniversary of EMUI and Huawei Club. At the same time, Dr. Wang Chenglu, the President of Huawei Consumer Business Software talked about the milestones of EMUI apart from revealing the release period of EMUI 11.

He said EMUI was first released in 2012 but he considers EMUI 5.0 as an important release in the history of EMUI development. The second major release was EMUI 8.0, which introduced AI features and GPU Turbo technology.

Then came EMUI 9.0 with ARK compiler, EROFS read-only file system, and Link Turbo. The software head considers this to be the third major release.

At last, in the interview, he revealed that EMUI 11 will be the next major release embracing distributed technology. He said that it will be unveiled in Q3 2020 alongside Huawei Mate 40 series.

However, it is worth noting that Mate 40 is reported to launch in October. But since the statement is coming from the company official, it may debut in September like every year despite various reports and rumors.

Huawei just recently debuted EMUI 10.1 with the P40 series in March. The company has also started rolling out the closed beta update for the same to eligible devices in China. Sadly, some of the global devices are yet to even receive EMUI 10, which was announced alongside Mate 30 series in September 2019. Nevertheless, the firm seems to have started working on EMUI 11, the next iteration of its mobile software.

Similar to Xiaomi, which has begun to work on MIUI 13, albeit MIUI 12 was only announced earlier this week, Huawei is also suggested to have started development for EMUI 11.

The existence of the next version of EMUI was spotted in the changelog for the new update of Huawei Member Center app on AppGallery in China. It clearly reads the app has been ‘optimized for EMUI 11’.

This is the first time we are hearing about EMUI 11, which is expected to be based on the next version of Android. We believe the development might have sort of begun since we will see the release of Android 11 Beta from different OEMs alongside Developer Preview 4 this month.

In case you do not know, Google’s partners get access to the latest version of Android earlier so that they can start implementing their UI and features. But since Huawei cannot do business with American companies, we are not sure how they got this privilege.

Since Android is an open-source platform, Huawei can use it but the final release of AOSP (Android Open Source Project) Android 11 will be out for the public only in the second half of the year. So ideally, the development of EMUI 11 should begin at that time. But at the moment, the company could be using Android 10 base in initial stages and might shift to the next version later this year. 

It is not known what features the next version of EMUI will bring. But we can expect deeper integration of HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) than ever before since it doesn’t look like the US government will lift the ban anytime soon.

Huawei is still rolling out EMUI 10 to its devices but news of the next version which is expected to be called EMUI 11 has surfaced. The folks at Huawei Central have gotten their hands on a list of Huawei and Honor phones that will get updated to EMUI 11 (or Magic UI 4).
