Apple iPhone’s Find My feature helps save woman involved in a Car Crash

Apple iPhone 14 series launched a couple of months prior with a slew of emergency SOS features to ensure it users’ safety. We covered various reports of this already helping people, and now, the latest news has found that the Find My feature has also helped saved a woman that was involved in a car crash.

For those unaware, the latest generation of iPhones come with Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via its Satellite connectivity features. These have helped people stranded or in other life threatening accidents. But in the latest report, rather that the crash detection, the Find My feature has helped save a woman that was a victim of a car crash. The accident took place in San Bernardino, California after a night of Christmas gathering.

The accident had her vehicle fall 200 feet down a hill on the side of the road. Although, her family had noticed that she had yet to make it home and was unresponsive. Thus, they used the Find My feature to track down her location. They found that her car was in a location over the side of the highway on the map and immediately contacted emergency services to get the relevant authorities involved.

The story was first broken out by the San Bernardino County Fire Department in a Facebook post. The woman had sustained severe injuries and had spent the night in the vehicle following the crash. Firefighter paramedics had to use advanced life support interventions and a rope system to retrieve the injured woman. Unlike the Crash Detection and Satellite SOS features, almost every iPhone universally supports the Find My feature. So another life was saved thanks by an Apple product.

The increasing price of smartphones has made them a valuable target for thieves. This problem has been made worse by the fact that stolen smartphones can be difficult to locate, putting the personal data and privacy of their owners at risk. However, the recent authorization of Meizu Technology’s anti-theft patent offers a potential solution. This technology allows users to easily find their lost or stolen devices and protect their personal information.

Meizu Granted Patent For Anti-Theft Technology For Smartphones

Meizu Technology has recently been granted a patent for its anti-theft technology for smartphones. This patent is a response to the growing problem of stolen or lost smartphones, which can be difficult to locate and may result in the loss of personal data and breach of privacy.

The patent specification outlines how the technology works. When the owner of a smartphone activates the anti-theft technology, the device receives a control instruction. Upon receiving the instruction, the smartphone is controlled into a black screen mode, rendering it inoperable. The SIM card slot is also locked, preventing others from using the device.

Alternatively, the technology can turn on the internet access function of the device and send location information, allowing the owner to locate the device. This can be useful if the device is not in the black screen mode or the SIM card slot is not locked.

Overall, this technology offers a solution to the problem of lost or stolen smartphones, protecting the user’s privacy and ensuring that lost devices can be located. The patent granted to Meizu Technology provides peace of mind for smartphone users, knowing that their device is protected against theft and can be easily located if it is lost or stolen.

Apple AirPods Pro and AirPods Max firmware update brings support for Find My

Apple has rolled out a new firmware update for the AirPods Pro as well as the AirPods Max which brings the support for finding the products if you misplace them, using the brand’s own Find My application.

The feature was teased by Apple in June at WWDC and was set to be introduced along with the iOS 15. While the feature didn’t show up with the iOS 15, thankfully, the company didn’t take much longer after the delay.

With this new firmware update, the compatible AirPods models get functionality inside of the Find My app, including precise location, a new Nearby Finding UI, Lost Mode, and the ability to get notifications when the earbuds are left behind.

There’s also an AirTag-like Find Nearby interface but given that the products don’t come with the U1 chips installed, the feature isn’t quite as precise as with an AirTag. You won’t be getting arrows pointing towards them, but the onscreen prompts will show statuses like far, near, or “here” depending on how close you are.

Before you take advantage of the new feature, you will need to update your AirPods to the just-released firmware. This isn’t a straightforward process as you need to place the charged AirPods in the case and then place it near a connected phone.

To check the firmware version of your AirPods, go to the Settings on your iPhone/iPad and then navigate to General > About. There, choose AirPods and you will see a field labeled “firmware version.” The new firmware version with Find My support is 4A400.

The addition of AirPods Pro and AirPods Max in the Find My network means that they will now send out a continuous Bluetooth beacon message. When other Apple devices are in the area, they can detect this signal and report it to the Find My network, placing its location on the owner’s map.
