Google Camera Go, the trimmed-down version of the Pixel smartphone’s Google Camera application was launched by the technology giant in March last year. Over time, the company kept adding more and more features and capabilities.

Now, the latest version of the Google Camera Go 2.5 has a new MOD version by “Greatness” that brings support for several more devices. It comes with added features like Portrait Mode and Night Mode, among others.

There are now basically three versions of the Google Camera application available — the normal Google Camera, the lighter version as Google Camera Go, and the new MOD version with support for auxiliary cameras.

The company has also added Google image processing which has been well-received by the users of the Pixel smartphones. Although the Google Camera Go is a trimmed version of the app on the premium Pixel phones and the company is also adding features from its flagship phones, do not expect the performance to be on par with that.

The latest Google Camera Go 2.5 MOD should be available for almost every Android smartphone running version 8 or above but there’s a possibility that it won’t work with some devices, especially those that are very old or outdated.

Google had said that the Camera Go application was built for Android Go smartphone users with a clean and simple interface so that it’s easier to use for first-time users. The app also tracks how much photo and video storage space is available and helps users clear up space to ensure that there’s ample space for storing new memories.

Google Camera Go debuted on Nokia 1.3 that was announced back in March 2020. A month later, the search giant was found to be working on HDR feature for this application. Now, eight months later, this feature is finally available for users.

Android Go Edition is a stripped-down version of the regular Android operating system for entry-level smartphones. It is designed for devices with 2GB or lower RAM. Most of these handsets are sold in developing nations as they are targeted at first time smartphone buyers.

Every now and then, Google introduces new features to this branch of Android OS. Hence, earlier this year, the company released an app called Camera Go. Months after the application’s official announcement, it received its first major feature – Night Mode in October.

Now, two months later, the app has got its second major feature – HDR. The Mountain View-based company confirmed it in a tweet sent by the official Android Twitter account.

In the announcement tweet, the firm even mentions that the final output of HDR pictures will vary by manufacturer. Anyway, these images should be much better than the regular shots.

Having said that, as we mentioned in the beginning, the Camera Go app is only available on smartphones running Android Go Edition. Although the APK can be installed on any device running Android 8.0 Oreo or higher, the Night Mode and HDR functionality won’t work.

Despite this, GCam modders have managed to find out that the internet search giant is testing HDR feature for this toned-downed Google camera app for entry-level smartphones.

The folks at XDA retrieved the Google Camera Go APK from the firmware of Nokia 1.3. Unfortunately, they are yet to share the APK to the public, however, Google Camera (GCam) modders have got their hands on it to dig deeper for (maybe) possible ports.

While doing so, they discovered Google to be working on HDR mode, which is currently missing on the app. As of now, it is not working even after turning on the toggle. Maybe, it will debut as a first major update for the app.

HDR photography on Android Go phones, usually priced around $100 can improve the overall quality of the pictures shot on them. This is a dream come true for people buying phones at budget prices as these handsets don’t support regular GCam mods yet.

Hopefully, modders port the Google Camera Go app for other devices just like they do with regular Google Camera app from Pixels. If that happens, people buying low-priced phones will not have to worry about potato quality pictures anymore.

Anyway, Google Camera Go mods are only applicable for enthusiasts, who mostly don’t come under the category of buying low-priced entry-level smartphones. Nevertheless, the regular app on the Android Go device with HDR capability can still make a difference.
