A report yesterday suggested that Oppo could be preparing Android’s first flagship with a square selfie camera. That may no longer be the case. A new leak from Digital Chat Station claims Honor is also testing a similar setup for the Honor Magic 9.

The tipster suggests that the upcoming Honor Magic 9 is currently testing several new camera sensors, including multiple 200MP main camera options and a new high-resolution front camera system.

The prototype is said to include two different 200MP main sensor options: the OV52A/OV52B at 1/1.28-inch size and the larger OVB0D at 1/1.12-inch. These sensors are being evaluated as possible primary cameras for the final device. 

Rounding out the rear setup, for now, is a 64MP periscope telephoto lens using the OmniVision OV64D sensor with a 1/2-inch format.

This isn’t the first time the OV64D periscope sensor has surfaced in relation to the Magic 9. An earlier leak from the same tipster had already pointed to the OmniVision chip for the device’s telephoto slot. 

The previous report also revealed a rear camera arrangement featuring a 200MP shooter with a 1/2.8-inch sensor and a 50MP ultra-wide lens. Today’s new information aligns with and expands on those earlier claims.

Perhaps the most interesting claim is regarding the front camera. The Magic 9 is reportedly being evaluated with a 100MP OVA0B sensor measuring 1/1.8 inches, but it won’t ship in that form.

According to the leak, the image will be cropped into a 1:1 square aspect ratio, which should effectively reduce the resolution and pixel size but produce a distinctly square selfie output.

Beyond cameras, earlier reports suggest the Magic 9 series may include a compact 6.36-inch OLED display, a large battery of around 8,000mAh, and testing with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 platform. It is also expected to offer IP68/IP69 protection and ultrasonic fingerprint scanning.

There is also a mention that ARRI may be working with Honor to improve video processing and cinematic output on the Magic 9 lineup.

The Honor Magic 9 series is currently expected to launch in China around October, though specifications could still change as testing continues.

According to the leak, the Honour Magic 9 features a 6.36-inch OLED LTPS display and is currently being tested with Qualcomm’s existing 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, not the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series as previously expected.

The Magic 9 is also said to pack a large battery that could start with an 8,000mAh capacity, which would be unusually high for a compact flagship. While it is said to support wireless charging, there is no information about the supported charging speeds. Other reports have also revealed that the Magic 9 will also offer full-level water resistance and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

The leaked prototype is further tipped to feature a 64MP periscope telephoto camera, reportedly using the OmniVision OV64D sensor. Other expected features include an ultrasonic 3D fingerprint scanner along with IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance.

A previous leak by the same source revealed that, apart from the 64-megapixel periscope camera, its rear setup will include a 200-megapixel camera featuring a 1/2.8-inch large sensor and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. Reports have also revealed that Honor will team up with German professional cinema industry brand ARRI to offer an enhanced videography experience on the Magic 9 lineup.

As far as the launch is concerned, the Honor Magic 9 series is expected to break cover in October this year in China.

To recall, the Honor Magic 8 was equipped with a 6.59-inch screen, but rumors surrounding the Magic 9 suggest that it could be a compact offering with a smaller display. Here’s a look at all the details that have surfaced through the latest leak.

A new leak from tipster Digital Chat Station suggests that the Honor Magic 9 could arrive with a strong focus on battery life and compact design. The device is said to feature a 6.3-inch “small screen” form factor, with early evaluations pointing to a battery capacity of around 8,000mAh, which would be a significant upgrade for this segment.

In terms of performance, Honor is reportedly testing two chipset options: a next-generation 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 (8E6) and a 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (8E5), with the final decision still under evaluation. If the company opts for the slightly older 8E5 platform, the device is still expected to retain premium features such as a periscope telephoto camera, wireless charging support, full-level water resistance, and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

The display is tipped to use an LTPS panel, and choosing the 3nm chip could allow Honor to position the phone at a noticeably lower price compared to the 2nm variant, potentially making it a more accessible flagship offering.

Honor’s next flagship phone is reportedly working on the side of Android that it isn’t particularly known for: video.

According to a new leak from tipster “Factory Manager is Guan,” the upcoming Honor Magic 9 series will come with an ARRI co-branded imaging system.

For those unaware, ARRI is the world’s leading designer of professional motion picture cameras, lenses, lighting systems, and post-production equipment. Founded in 1917 and based in Germany, the company’s gear shows up in films, documentaries, and high-end productions. 

And FYI, this partnership didn’t come out of nowhere. At the 2026 Mobile World Congress, Honor and ARRI officially announced a strategic collaboration to bring ARRI Image Science into next-generation consumer devices. 

According to the tipster, the Magic 9 series will offer “ exceptional video capabilities.” It won’t be quite at the level of Honor’s experimental “Robot Phone,” but potentially enough to challenge the long-standing perception that Android phones lag in video recording. 

Honor Magic 9 series could launch in October 

The tipster also says that if a phone can handle video well, still photography tends to follow. The suggestion is that the Magic 9 series could deliver a more complete imaging upgrade. 

Honor CEO Li Jian previously hinted that this new imaging system could surpass Apple’s current camera performance. 

Beyond cameras, the Magic 9 series is also expected to debut with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, built on a 2nm process from TSMC. 

Last but not least, the tipster suggests the Honor Magic 9 series will launch in October. That’s right after the expected announcement of the iPhone 18 series. 

For now, it’s still a leak. But if even part of it holds up, the Magic 9 series could end up being less about specs and more about changing how Android phones are judged, particularly when it comes to video.

The rear setup will also include a 64-megapixel periscope telephoto camera equipped with a mid-tier 1/2-inch sensor. While there is no information about the device’s front camera, it may retain the Magic 8’s 50-megapixel selfie snapper.

A couple of days ago, it was reported that Honor is upgrading the Magic 9’s battery and is currently working on packing an 8,000mAh unit. The new leak suggests that Honor has begun early prototyping for its next-generation Magic 9 flagship series. Two new flat displays are reportedly being tested: a compact 6.36-inch panel and a much larger 6.85-inch panel. Both screens are said to feature 2.5D flat glass with large, rounded corners.

Likely, the standard Magic 9 may adopt a smaller flat display, while the Magic 9 Pro could feature a significantly larger flat screen. The tipster has also mentioned a “Pro Max” variant in the leak.
