Earlier this week, Huawei introduced its Mate 80 series of next gen flagship smartphones in its home market. The lineup consists of the base Mate 80, Mate 80 Pro, new Mate 80 Pro Max, and the Mate 80 RS Ultimate Edition. These premium devices feature the brand’s in-house silicon, bold designs, and cutting edge camera and display technology. With four distinct models, Huawei is trying to cover all bases. So here’s a quick breakdown of what the Mate 80 series brings to the table.

Meet the Mate 80 Lineup

The Mate 80 Series comprises four variants: Huawei Mate 80, Huawei Mate 80 Pro, Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max, and Huawei Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design. Each uses Huawei’s custom chipset and runs on HarmonyOS 6. The base Mate 80 is built with the Kirin 9020, targeting users who want flagship level design and features without spending an exorbitant sum. But the Mate 80 Pro and Mate 80 Pro Max step up the performance with the newer Kirin 9030/Kirin 9030 Pro chipsets. The RS Ultimate Design gets the Kirin 9030 chip as well, but pairs it with a whopping 20GB of RAM.

Dual-Ring Builds & Dual-Layer OLED

All models in the Mate 80 series carry a distinctive dual-ring design, combining glass, metal, and brocade fiber for enhanced durability. These also get an IP68 + IP69 rating for water and dust resistance, Xuanwu mid frame, Kunlun Glass for protection. The second ring below the circular camera module basically makes the infinity “8” figure.

On the front, the base Mate 80 and Mate 80 Pro ship with a tall 6.75-inch OLED display with LTPO support for a 1-120Hz variable refresh rate, 1.5K resolution, 1440Hz PWM dimming, 300Hz touch sampling rate, and second generation Kunlun glass. While this is fairly standard, the Mate 80 Pro Max and Mate 80 RS Ultimate take things a step further with a tall 6.9-inch dual layer OLED display. This also brings LTPO, 1-120Hz refresh rate, 1440Hz PWM dimming, 300Hz touch sampling rate, and a ludicrous peak brightness of 8000 nits. The new dual-layer OLED implementation is a standout, promising better durability, color accuracy, and higher brightness.

Cameras & Photography

Photography has been one of Huawei’s strong suits, and it hasn’t skipped out here. Across the series, the camera hardware stays compelling, with the Mate 80 Pro Max and RS Ultimate offering advanced imaging systems. You get a main 50 MP sensor, RYYB color filter, ultra-wide, macro telephoto, and a super-telephoto lens that delivers up to 6.2× optical zoom and 12.4× “optical-quality” zoom.

The main camera is a large 1/1.28-inch sensor with 10 stop variable aperture, and there is even support for a new 3.3x teleconverter photography kit. This camera system is powered by Huawei’s proprietary XMAGE imaging tech. Meanwhile, the base Mate 80 and Mate 80 Pro feature less advanced hardware. The standard model gets a 50MP main + 40MP ultra wide angle lens, + 12MP periscope telephoto shooter, and the Mate 80 Pro arrives with a 50MP main + 40MP ultra wide angle lens, + 48MP macro telephoto shooter. For selfies and video calls, all four models pack a 13MP camera on the front.

On top of that, features like AI-assisted composition, dynamic portrait tweaks, super-night shots, RAW support, and Starry-Sky portrait mode make the cameras versatile. These are also suitable for creative work, travel photography, and content creation as well.

AI, Satellite Tools & Extras

All Mate 80 models run HarmonyOS 6, giving access to a suite of AI tools and cross-device integrations. More interestingly, the Pro Max and RS models support satellite communication (via Tiantong & Beidou) and come packed with robust outdoor tools: maps, compass, waypoint tracking, and emergency messaging.

These are features that make the devices ideal for travel or outdoor enthusiasts. The RS Ultimate also adds further polish: titanium frames, enhanced glass protection, and even a smarter AI assistant that can learn your habits, automate tasks, and bring dynamic themes.

Huawei is officially kicking off pre-reservations for its upcoming Mate 80 lineup today at 12:08 PM. The new flagship family can now be reserved through Huawei Mall, major e-commerce partners, Huawei experience stores, and authorized retail locations.

Alongside the announcement, the company also shared the first look at the Huawei Mate 80 phones, including the RS Ultimate Design model. 

Yu Chengdong, Huawei’s Executive Director and head of its smart device division, shared the first look at the Mate 80 Pro Max in a short video posted earlier today. 

Huawei traditionally offered “Pro” and “Pro+” variants in the Mate series, but this year the company is introducing a new “Pro Max” model that will replace the Pro+ entirely. 

Huawei Mate 80 series boasts a new dual ring design

The Pro Max model has a unique dual-ring layout on the back. The upper ring houses a large circular camera module with four lenses, the XMAGE branding at the center, and an LED flash tucked into the outer ring. 

Right beneath it sits a second ring that is nearly the same size, creating a figure-eight-like design. The lower ring is likely for magnetic charging or accessory interface, just like MagSafe for iPhones.

Magnetic accessories for Android phones finally debuted with the Pixel 10 series’ PixelSnap feature, so there’s no reason for Huawei to be left behind. 

For those wanting something even more premium, the Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design edition goes in a different direction. It features an octagonal camera module paired with distinctive Huawei and Ultimate Design branding.

Huawei has confirmed that the Mate 80 series, along with the Mate X7 and several ecosystem devices, will debut on November 25th. All the debuting phones are expected to be powered by the new Kirin 9030 processor.

Huawei is preparing for a major launch event on Nov. 25, where it is expected to introduce the Mate 80 series. At the same event, the company will reportedly unveil the Mate X7 and the MatePad Edge. A leak shared by tipster UncleShan a couple of days ago has revealed the configurations and colour options for these products, offering a full preview ahead of the official announcement.

Huawei Mate 80 series configurations, color options

According to the leak, the Mate 80 series will arrive with multiple storage and colour options. The standard Mate 80 is said to come in 12GB+256GB and 16GB+512GB or 1TB variants, offered in Obsidian Black, Snowy White, Spruce Green and Dawn Gold.

The Mate 80 Pro may be available in 16GB+256GB, 12GB+512GB and 16GB+512GB options in the same color palette.

For those wanting higher-end hardware, the Mate 80 Pro Max is tipped to ship in 16GB+512GB and 16GB+1TB variants and may come in Aurora Cyan, Daybreak Gold, Midnight Black and Polar Silver.

The premium Mate 80 RS could feature 20GB+512GB and 20GB+1TB versions in Black, White and Violet finishes.

Battery capacities across the series are reportedly 5750mAh and 6000mAh, with all models featuring a flat-screen design.

Mate X7 and MatePad Edge

The Huawei Mate X7 foldable phone is expected to launch in 12GB+256GB and 12GB+512GB versions, while the Mate X7 Collector’s Edition may come in 16GB+512GB, 16GB+1TB and 20GB+1TB configurations. Colour choices appear to include Obsidian Black, Phantom Purple, Universe Red, Brocade Blue and Brocade White.

The leak also hints at another foldable device with an unknown name and a fanless GTS-like profile.

As for the MatePad Edge 14.2, it is described as a successor to the MateBook E in a 2-in-1 format. It reportedly features a dual-fan cooling system and will debut in Moonlight Silver and Deep Space Grey. It will come in two options: 16GB+512GB and 24GB+1TB.

Tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed that Huawei’s next-generation flagship, the Mate 80 series, is scheduled to arrive in November. According to the leak, the upcoming range will include four models and introduce significant upgrades across design, imaging, and performance, positioning it as a strong contender against the newly launched iPhone 17 series.

Huawei Mate 80 series: What to expect?

It can be said based on the above leak that the Huawei Mate 80 lineup is said to feature the Mate 80, Mate 80 Pro, Mate 80 Pro+, and Mate 80 RS. Camera specifications differ across models, with the Mate 80 expected to house a 50-megapixel 1/1.5-inch primary sensor, the Pro version moving to a 50-megapixel 1/1.3-inch unit, and both the Pro+ and RS adopting a larger 50-megapixel 1/1.3-inch SmartSens 590 sensor.

Display options include 2.5D flat screens on the Pro model and possibly 3D face recognition, while the Pro+ and RS are tipped to test both 2.5D and 4D deep curvature designs.

The highlight is the Mate 80 RS, which may come with a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED display. This display structure, with stacked emission layers, is expected to deliver higher brightness, lower power consumption, and longer life compared with conventional OLED panels. Alongside this, Huawei is reportedly testing titanium alloy frames and glass backs with ceramic-like texture for a premium feel.

Under the hood, the series is tipped to debut the Kirin 9030 processor with an internal design breakthrough. Battery capacity could exceed 6000mAh, with support for 100W wired and 80W wireless charging. Connectivity may include 5G and satellite communication.

Huawei is still a couple of generations behind in terms of performance (on its smartphones) after losing access to its primary chip supplier, TSMC. The brand turned to China’s SMIC for its latest Kirin chipset due to the US restrictions. But news hints at the next gen flagships getting faster thanks to improvements in chip tech.

Huawei’s Mate 80 Series Gets Faster

The latest news arrives from known tipster Digital Chat Station, who claims that the next gen Kirin 9030 SoC will get a performance upgrade of around 20 percent. To recall, the current Huawei flagship is the Pura 80 lineup, which features the Kirin 9020 chipset. In other words, the newer Huawei Mate 80 series models like the Mate 80 and Mate 80 RS Ultimate edition will likely pack this newer and faster processor.

While initial rumors had hinted at the upcoming Kirin processors being based on the 5nm process, the latest leak hints otherwise. Since China’s biggest foundry (SMIC) does not have the equipment for the more advanced processing node, it might be working with Huawei for multi-patterning techniques. This is basically a process where SMIC puts a silicon wafer through multiple etching processes to capture the correct transistor density and features.

Based on what we know so far, Huawei might build the Mate 80 series with a mini cooling fan without compromising on the devices’ waterproofing. The premium Mate 80 RS model is expected to get a dual-layer OLED and titanium frame, while the lineup in general is expected with a major camera upgrade, including a new SmartSens sensor.

According to well-known leaker Digital Chat Station, Huawei’s upcoming Mate 80 RS might pack a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED screen, the same display tech that debuted on last year’s Mate 70 RS.

Dual-layer OLED is exactly what it sounds like. It has two light-emitting OLED layers stacked on top of each other. This setup offers higher brightness, lower power consumption, and a longer screen life compared to traditional single-layer OLED panels.

The only drawback is that it’s expensive to produce. Even Apple is rumored to be looking into the technology for future iPhones, which says a lot about its potential.

Huawei Mate 80 RS with ceramic back

Beyond the screen, Huawei seems to be going all-in on premium materials. The leak mentions that the engineering prototype of Mate 80 RS has a titanium alloy middle frame. Last year’s Mate 70 RS introduced a high-gloss titanium basalt structure, and it seems Huawei wants to keep that tradition alive with even better durability.

On the back, Huawei is reportedly going for a ceramic texture finish. This doesn’t mean it’s actual ceramic, but rather a special type of glass that mimics the smooth, jade-like feel of ceramic while being lighter. 

Given how the RS models usually share hardware DNA with the Pro variants, the Mate 80 RS could feature the same camera setup as the Mate 80 Pro and Mate 80 Pro+. 

We’re talking about a 50MP shooter with a 1/1.28-inch sensor, roughly the same size as the one on Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro. That’s smaller than the massive 1-inch sensor found on Huawei’s Pura 80 Pro and Pura 80 Ultra, but it’s built on a 22nm process and features a 1.2μm pixel size. 

The Huawei Mate 80 series is rumored to launch sometime in October 2025.
