Now, the brand is following up with a release for its next foldable phone, the Huawei Mate Xs 2. The company has already set a release date for the phone and in this article, we’ll take a look at how to watch the smartphone’s launch event.

How to Watch the Huawei Mate Xs 2 launch event

Huawei Mate Xs 2 is scheduled to launch on April 28 in China. The launch will commence at 7 PM China time (4:30 PM IST/ 11:00 AM UTC). You can watch the live launch event on the company’s Weibo page – Click here to watch the Live Stream.

What to Expect from the Huawei Mate Xs 2

Huawei hasn’t explicitly revealed all the details of the foldable phone. However, the teaser posters have confirmed that the phone will come with an outward folding design. This seems to be an interesting move as the predecessor came with an inward folding screen, but the fans wanted an outward folding screen. And now with the Mate Xs 2, fans will finally get the outward foldable design.

In addition to the teasers, a Chinese tipster shared the renders of the foldable smartphone. Thanks to the renders, we know that the device will come with a punch-hole display. It will be a wide panel, however, the screen size is still unknown.

Now, just a while after, a number of such employees are attempting to resell the device online.

For those unaware, Tencent recently underwent a restructuring within its organization with shuffling bringing in different parts of its various departments together. After this, the company sent a large number of Mate Xs smartphones to its employees as a gift during an internal event for Tencent PCG (Platform and Content Business Group) on 30th September 2020.

UP NEXT: Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 launched in India with a secondary display, Intel Core i9 chip, and more

However, it seems that a number of employees would much rather have cash than a rather expensive smartphone. In just a short while, numerous listings of the gifted Mate Xs have surfaced online at varying price points. People in China also began to notice that since the event, the overall number of Mate Xs smartphones being sold also rose in number, as per a MyDrivers report.

The gifted Mate Xs also had the label of customized Tencent variant, which would also likely add to its resale value since it is a rather exclusive limited edition that the general public can’t simply purchase. The prices range anywhere between the original 16,999 Yuan price and even reaching as high as 19,999 Yuan (roughly 2,950 US Dollars).

Design

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a different form factor from Royole FlexPai 2 and Huawei Mate Xs. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a foldable display placed internally, while in the external part of the phone there is a classic smartphone-like display. The Huawei Mate Xs and the Royole FlexPai 2 have foldable displays placed externally which can split into two different external displays (one on the front and one on the back) while the smartphone is folded.

Display

The best display in terms of image quality belongs to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2: despite being a plastic OLED panel, the handset has the HDR10+ certification and a 120 Hz refresh rate, which you do not get on Royole FlexPai 2 and Huawei Mate Xs. But when the smartphone is folded, you will have to use an HD+ screen with a standard refresh rate. On the other hand, you get two external displays with Huawei Mate Xs and Royole FlexPai 2 by folding the main foldable display, but the image quality is inferior.

Hardware/Software

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a superior phone even when it comes to the hardware department. It packs a stronger Snapdragon 865+ chipset paired with 12 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.1 native storage. The silver medal goes to the FlexPai 2 by Royole which is fueled by the Snapdragon 865 mobile platform paired with up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage. Huawei Mate Xs is weaker with its Kirin 990 5G chipset and just 8 GB of RAM. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 has the best software and Samsung guarantees longer software support (3 years). Unfortunately, Huawei Mate Xs lacks Google Mobile Services, so you do not get Google apps out of the box, replaced by Huawei Mobile Services.

Camera

The Huawei Mate Xs has the most advanced camera setup, including a 40 MP main sensor, an 8 MP telephoto sensor with OIS and 3x optical zoom, a 16 MP ultrawide lens, and a TOF 3D sensor. But you should not underestimate Royole FlexPai 2 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2: they are still great camera phones. Unfortunately, we still can not give you a definitive verdict about the camera performance of these three devices because Royole FlexPai 2 just went official and there was no time to test its camera capabilities.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, Huawei Mate Xs, and Royole FlexPai 2 have similar battery capacities and similar components, so the differences between battery life will be marginal. The Huawei Mate Xs support way faster charging, but it lacks wireless charging, while you get wireless charging and reverse charging on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Price

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is priced at about €2000/$2350 globally, Huawei Mate Xs costs €2600/$3000, and Royole FlexPai costs less than €1300/$1500 in China (still not available globally). At the end of the day, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 wins the comparison because of its better display, more advanced hardware department, and reverse/wireless charging capabilities. But not everyone might like its form factor.

One may concern about the foldable phones is their durability. iFixit has now released a teardown video of the latest Huawei Mate Xs showing not just the internals but also rate the phone’s repairability on a scale of 10. Interestingly, the Mate Xs was given a dismal 2 of 10 repairability score which means it is difficult to repair. That may not be because of poor quality but as a result of the extra-strong adhesive which held the flexible panel and some other components in place. The iFixit reviewer had to deploy extra force in order to remove the rear panel and batteries.

The flexible display was also pretty difficult to access as it requires going through the hinge and dealing with strong metal clips. The cumbersome process may even lead to damaging the OLED.

However, despite the horrible 2 of 10 repairability score, the Mate Xs has a new hinge design which doesn’t allow dust and dirt to enter into the display. The extra-strong adhesive could even add to the durability of the phone but that’ll be as long as you don’t need to take it apart and fix something.

Check out the teardown video from below.

Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu gave an online interview to the press earlier today.
Huawei dethroned Apple to become the world’s second-largest smartphone brand in terms of shipments in 2019. But yet, it’s profit margin is less than that of the Cupertino-based tech giant. This is because the brand’s premium products feature high-end tech, which costs more but still the company sells the final product at a lesser price than its prime competitors.

Mr. Richard Yu said the camera components in the Huawei P40 series alone cost more than $100. He also revealed that the company has so far lost around $60 – $70 million dollars in selling the Mate Xs foldable smartphone, even though it is priced at 16,999 Yuan (~$2267). He further added that the company cannot make a profit unless the price of folding panels goes down. Till then, the retail price of the foldables will remain high.

Mr. Yu also revealed that Huawei’s investment in R&D will likely be the second-largest this year. He also added that some of the competitors merely spend a billion Yuan in R&D, however, his company is investing $20 billion.

He believes innovation and products should go hand in hand to retain customers and maintain sales. This is why Huawei has been focusing more on research and development. In 2019, the company invested about $18.5 billion in R&D (third-largest), which accounted for 15.3% of its total revenue of 467.3 billion Yuan with 34% YoY growth.

Huawei holds 85,000 patents worldwide, out of which 90% are invention patents. Last year, Huawei was the top patent applier in the European Union with a total count of 3,524.

This means that it is virtually impossible to make a profit.

Huawei had recently launched the Mate Xs, which is the successor to the first foldable smartphone from the company and features various improvements. Both the devices carried a hefty price tag and are generally considered premium grade high end devices that only enthusiasts would buy. With a price tag over 10,000 Yuan (over 1400 US Dollars), one could afford even afford high end desktops or laptops at this range.

During the press conference, Yu Chengdong was asked if the price of the foldable phones be about the same as an ordinary phone in the near future. To this, the senior executive responded saying, “I think we need more than a year, maybe a year and a half or two years.” He even mentioned that the cost of this kind of product is extremely high and that the company is losing money.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei P40 Pro has now surpassed 80,000 paid deposit pre-orders in China before launch

According to Yu Chengdong, the cost of making foldable smartphones like the Mate Xs is so high that there is virtually no way to make a profit. However, the reason Huawei is still focusing on expanding the production is due to the fact that its demand is impressively larger than expected, despite the 16,999 Yuan price tag (roughly 2,400 US Dollars).

It features the new Kirin 990 5G SoC with various improvements to performance and battery life. The new designs also enhance the durability of the device and makes it a better foldable handset overall with an improved hinge mechanism as well.

The display is one of the most important components of a smartphone. There are only few OLED panel manufacturers in the world and one of them is BOE. A few hours after the announcement of the P40 series, BOE’s Vice President proudly announced on Weibo that all the new premium smartphones by Huawei including P40, P40 Pro, P40 Pro Plus, and Mate Xs use their flexible OLED panel.

BOE, a Chiese display manufacturer has been lately emerging as an alternate OLED supplier to many companies to reduce their dependency on Samsung. Lenovo is also using panels made by BOE in its ThinkPad X1 Fold and Moto Razr foldable smartphone. It also lacks the 90Hz refresh rate from the pro models but it has the same cutout on the top left corner of the screen to accommodate selfie camera, depth camera, and IR sensor.

Now, the Indian official Twitter handle of the company teases the camera specs of this device. Is the Chinese telecom giant planning to launch it in the country? Well, we will have to wait and see as the company hasn’t sent out media invites yet.

The Mates Xs by Huawei is one of a kind folding smartphone. Unlike other foldable in the market like the Galaxy Fold, Galaxy Z Flip, and Moto Razr, the panel on this handset folds outside opposed to inside on the above mention devices. It is worth noting that the Mate Xs follows the same design of the original Mate X from last year but with better hardware specs.

As the Huawei India official Twitter handle teases, the Mate Xs feature a quad-camera setup, which has become common these days. The cameras on this phone are placed vertically on the elongate bump which also houses the volume rockers and the power key with an integrated fingerprint sensor. The camera sensors on this foldable include a 40MP primary unit with f/1.8 aperture, an 8MP telephoto camera (up to 30x digital zoom) with f/2.4 aperture as well as OIS, a 16MP ultra-wide camera with f/2.2 aperture, and a Huawei made TOF (Time-of-Flight) sensor. Like the previous premium Huawei phones, the camera system on this is also co-engineered with Leica.

For now, the Indian division of Huawei has only teased the camera specs. If they happen to tease more of it in the company days, we are certain that they will launch it in the country just like how Samsung and Motorola made their foldable smartphones available in the worlds’ second-largest smartphone market.

The Mate Xs is, thus, turning out to be as popular as the Mate X which sold as many units as Huawei could manufacture daily. This is despite the hefty 16,999 yuan (~$2,400) price tag for which the device sells. This is the same price as the Mate X 5G but where the Mate XS 5G excels is the presence of the latest Kirin 990 5G chipset onboard. The foldable smartphone is also said to come with a reinforced hinge as well as an improved cooling mechanism.

Several polls conducted after the Mate X and Galaxy Fold release showed that most persons prefer the out-folding design of the Mate X. The general consensus among those who were impressed by the design is that the Mate X represents what a truly foldable phone should look like. That is a design which is used unfolded and collapses into two halves when folded and not a dual display-packing design like the Galaxy Fold. But then, the Mate X is more fragile and that should also translate to the Mate Xs. Moreover, most fans seem to have pitched their tent with the Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr 2019 clamshell-like foldable design. The flash sale result proves otherwise about the Mate Xs’ popularity in China.

As the name itself confirms, the device is the upgraded variant of the Huawei Mate X launched last year.

Today, the Huawei Mate Xs foldable smartphone was officially made available for purchase in the Chinese market at 10:08 AM local time, for a price of 16,999 yuan which roughly converts to $2,450. The device was up for reservation from 26th February on e-commerce platform likes Vmall and JD.com.

The Huawei Mate Xs comes with some improvements over the predecessor model. It features an upgraded hinge structurer and an enhanced cooling system. Also, the device comes powered by the latest Huawei Kirin 990 5G chipset, coupled with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

The smartphone features a dual layer structure over the 8-inch foldable OLED display that offers a screen resolution of 2200 x 2480 pixels. The frontal 6.6-inch screen offers an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and the screen portion on the rear offers a tall aspect ratio of 25:9.

The camera setup of the device includes a 40-megapixel main lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto shooter with OIS, 16-megapixel ultra-wide lens and a ToF sensor. There’s no separate front-facing camera module given that the main cameras with the rear screen working as viewfinder can be used for shooting selfies and video calling.

As the company has been banned from using Google’s apps and services, it comes with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) as a replacement for Google‘s services.
Compared to the usual retail box that comes with the smartphone, the box that Huawei is offering with the Mate Xs seems a bit different. Here’s the unboxing experience of the phone detailed.

The Huawei Mate Xs comes in a big square-shared Black colored box which can be opened through a magnetic flap. When opened, you are presented with the Mate Xs foldable smartphone in an unfolded position, wrapped in a plastic sheet.

Removing that layer from the box presents three compartments that houses different accessories that the Chinese giant offers, which includes a plastic protective case or frame, a charger, data cable, collar clip, and earphones.

A product page of the Mate Xs has appeared on Jingdong Mall (JD.com). The device is now up for reservations on China’s retailer site. The listing states that the phone will be available for purchase from March 5.

Huawei had introduced its first phone with a folding screen, the Huawei Mate X at 2019 Mobile World Congress (MWC) tech exhibition. The successor phone i.e. the Mate Xs has debuted with a more powerful chipset and improved design. JD.com seems to have bagged the first online test right for Mate Xs this time.

Though the release date for the phone in the Chinese market hasn’t been officially announced, the JD listing states that the phone will go on sale in China on March 5 10:08am (local time). The pricing of Huawei’s new foldable phone for Chinese markets is currently under the wraps.

Huawei Mate Xs specifications and features

The Huawei Mate Xs that is priced at 2,499 euros comes with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of onboard storage. The processor has been upgraded from a Kirin 980 to Kirin 990 that confers it an integrated 5G modem. It runs on EMUI 10 based on the open-source version of Android 10 but would use its own ecosystem called HMS (Huawei Mobile services). The device lacks support for GMS (Google Mobile Services).

The Mate Xs arrives with a quad-layer construction for its screen, a more robust design over its predecessor Mate X. This includes two opposed layers of polyamide film above a flexible OLED display. A softer polymer layer below this would offer a cushioning effect and a final layer below this will connect to the main body of the phone. Huawei has also worked on the design of the hinge to make it more smoother and durable as compared to Mate X. The Mate Xs promises to allow use of three apps at once, one on the left side of the display, one on the right, and a third in a floating window. Additionally, it will allow for simultaneously opening two instances of the same app.

With an 8-inch screen that folds from the outside and a main display that measures 6.6 inches, other features of the phone seem to match that of the original Mate X. Like its predecessor, the camera hardware includes a main 40-megapixel f/1.8 camera, an 8-megapixel f/2.4 telephoto camera, a 16-megapixel f/2.2 ultrawide camera, and a 3D depth-sensing camera. The battery life too hasn’t been upgraded from 4,500mAh that Mate X had arrived with.

According to a series of Weibo posts (Chinese microblogging website) from Huawei, the company plans on hosting a special launch event. The three posts which were shared arrive in quick succession and revealed that three different flagship products will be launched at the conference. These include a smartphone, a tablet, and a notebook as well. From what we know so far, the flagship launches are expected to be the Huawei Mate Xs, Huawei Matepad Pro 5G and the 2020 Mate X Pro.

The Mate Xs is likely to be the signature launch in this event as it has been highly anticipated and hyped smartphones. It will be the successor to the original Mate X which was launched in 2019 and will feature improvements across the board. Previously, certain details regarding the upcoming foldable smartphone were revealed to be an improvement on the hinge mechanism, a faster processor (Kirin 990 5G SoC) and a better flexible display.

Furthermore, the MatePad Pro 5G and the Mate X Pro are other welcomed entries from Huawei. So stay tuned for the launch event and any additional information as well.

This makes it the first company to officially confirm an event in Barcelona after GSMA canceled MWC 2020. The company is calling it a virtual press conference because it will screen a pre-recorded keynote at the event in Barcelona, followed by a demo experience on-site.

In addition to this, Gizmochina has learned that Huawei will announce its new Foldable smartphone at the event. We can confirm that this won’t be the Huawei Mate X foldable that was announced last year. So, it’s a brand new foldable model that will be launched and showcased at the event in Barcelona. The company also plans to announce a few other consumer tech products at the same event.

Unfortunately, we are not sure of the identity of the new foldable. It could be the Huawei Mate XS model that was mentioned in 2019. Huawei’s CEO, Richard Yu had confirmed last year that the Mate XS will feature a better processor (Kirin 990 5G), an improved display and an upgraded hinge mechanism. The Mate XS is also expected to feature some changes in its design that’ll make it more compact and durable.

Honor also has an event in Barcelona on the same day at 18:30 CEST.

The unique handset went on sale later the same year and received a relatively positive reception. Now, a year has passed and reports suggest that the Chinese tech giant will launch a successor named Mate Xs which is expected to be launched in March 2020.

Huawei Mate Xs is more than just a tweaked version of the original Mate X. Reportedly, the foldable smartphone is easier to manufacture than its predecessor while still providing a similar if not greater experience. This also indicated that the company may sell the handset at a lower price in comparison to the previous entry.

Huawei Mate X

The Mate X cost 16,999 Yuan or roughly 2,467 US Dollars. Thus, if the Mate Xs is priced lower than this, it might be able to appeal to a broader audience and a larger demographic. From a manufacturing point of view, the ease in production and economy of scales due to large demand is also beneficial to Huawei.

Furthermore, the report also mentions that the company has made many adjustments to the design of the second entry in the series. The hinge is said to be more durable and the entire body is made more durable and portable with a smaller overall size. Notably, Huawei is also expected to release a second foldable smartphone in the second half of this year.

One of the foldable smartphones we saw this year is the Mate X and it combines a foldable design with 5G connectivity. Huawei‘s own foldable design is regarded by many as a true definition of the foldable concept due to the out folding design that transforms the screen from a wide to a narrow form factor.

A new Huawei model believed to be theMAte X successor has been certified by China’s CCC (3C). The device appears with the model number TAH-AN00m. The Mate X had the codename TAH or Tahiti in full, meaning this model is related. As usual, 3C doesn’t reveal any details about a model aside from the charging features. In this case, the only apparent improvement revealed in the listing seems to be improved 20V/3.25A (65W) charging. 65W charging is rumoured to be coming with Huawei’s upcoming Huawei P40 lineup, and it’s also rumoured to be one of the Mate Xs’s purported features. It will be a significant improvement over the Mate X which supports 55W charging.

The Mate X2, a new version is expected to come in Q3 2020. but before then, Huawei will release a trimmed down variant known as MateXs around the first quarter of 2020 but will be unveiled at MWC 2020 trade show.
