The Huawei MatePad Pro launched in China today with features not seen on any tablet before. It is not only the first tablet with a punch-hole display but it is also the first tablet with support for reverse wireless charging. No, it is not the first tablet with wireless charging, the Nexus 7 (2013) supports wireless charging too.

The new tablet is powered by the Kirin 990 processor but a more powerful version will arrive next year. Huawei’s CEO, Yu Chengdong, disclosed at the launch that the MatePad Pro will get a 5G version next year. That version should be powered by the Kirin 990 5G which not only has a built-in 5G modem but has its cores clocked at a higher speed.

Huawei MatePad Pro 5G

The MatePad Pro 5G version will launch in the first quarter of 2020. Based on the timeline, the device may arrive alongside the Huawei P40 series.

Other than the difference in the processor and network (5G support), we expect the MatePad Pro 5G to have a bigger battery capacity. The MatePad Pro has a 7250mAh battery capacity, slightly smaller than the 7500mAh battery of the MediaPad 10.8. We presume Huawei will include a 7500mAh battery in the 5G version of its new tablet. And of course, expect a higher price tag.
