Today we have a list of the top 10 Chinese manufacturers in 2016 according to shipments.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The list was released by the Director of IHS Technology, Wang Yang and includes shipments made overseas. The list is headed by none other than Huawei who recorded a total of 139 million shipments last year. They are followed by OPPO who sold a total of 95 million units with big thanks to the OPPO R9 which pulled in 20 million units.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-116278 size-full" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/2016-Chinese-manufaturer-Shipments.jpg?x44794" alt="2016 Chinese Manufacturers Shipments" width="416" height="365" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/2016-Chinese-manufaturer-Shipments.jpg 416w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/2016-Chinese-manufaturer-Shipments-300x263.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px" /></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">OPPO&#8217;s sister company Vivo comes in at the third position with 82 million units. It is no news that Xiaomi recorded poor sales in 2016 as they are lagging behind Vivo by 24 million units. Close on the heels of Xiaomi is ZTE with a shipment of 57 million phones.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Lenovo (and Motorola) stands at 50 million units but we do not know if the figure includes the sales of ZUK phones. TCL, the new hardware partner of Blackberry recorded 34 million units. Gionee makes it to the list with 28 million units which is an improvement from what was recorded in 2015.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Meizu sold 22 million units last year to come in at the ninth position which makes us wonder if they would have done better had any of their devices launched with a Snapdragon processor. LeEco comes in at number 10 with a total of 19 million units.</p>

IHS Research analyst, Kevin Wang has just revealed via <a href="http://photo.weibo.com/1858261594/talbum/detail/photo_id/4035552312950788" target="_blank">Weibo</a> the ranking of the top Chinese smartphone manufacturers based on sales in Q3 2016. The list features some huge surprises which we never saw coming as OPPO was listed to have sold more phones than any other company in Q3, 2016, edging Huawei out of the top position it had occupied in Q1 and <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/07/28/q2-2016-smartphone-sales-ranking-huawei-right-top-xiaomi-fourth-place/">Q2 2016</a>. The BBK subsidiary recorded a total of 22 million units in sales for the third quarter.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/chinese-phones-ihs/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-105041" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/chinese-phones-ihs.jpg?x44794" alt="chinese-phones-ihs" width="618" height="364" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/chinese-phones-ihs.jpg 618w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/chinese-phones-ihs-300x177.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px" /></a></p>
<p>The IHS data also showed Vivo, another BBK subsidiary, came ahead of Huawei to clinch the second position with a total of 19 million units in sales. Huawei surprisingly dropped to the third position with a total of 18 million units in smartphone sales. This is way down from the 32 million units the company was listed to have sold by IHS research data in Q2 2016.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/chinese-phones-ihs-2/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-105042" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/chinese-phones-ihs-2.jpg?x44794" alt="chinese-phones-ihs-2" width="595" height="641" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/chinese-phones-ihs-2.jpg 595w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/chinese-phones-ihs-2-278x300.jpg 278w" sizes="(max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px" /></a></p>
<p>Innovative start up Xiaomi maintained its number 4 position on the ladder from the previous quarter with 12 million units sold in Q3. This however is lower than the 15.22 million units the company was recorded to have sold in Q2 2016.The top five was complete by US based company Apple who sold a total of 11 million units in the quarter under review.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Read Also: </span><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/07/28/q2-2016-smartphone-sales-ranking-huawei-right-top-xiaomi-fourth-place/">Q2 2016 Chinese Smartphone Sales Ranking: Huawei Right On Top, Xiaomi In Fourth</a></strong></p>
<p>In all, a total of 123 million units were sold cumulatively by all the known Chinese smartphone brands in Q3 2016. This figure is said to represent a 15% growth from the same period last year. The IHS Resarch Director for China also predicted a slight growth in phone sales for the fourth and final quarter of the year but the increase is expected to be reduced compared to that of Q3.</p>

The base version of the iPhone 7 with 32GB of built-in storage sells for $649. The Research firm took apart the iPhone&#8217;s parts and also put into consideration several factors before arriving at that damning conclusion which doesn&#8217;t include the iPhone 7 Plus.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-98817 aligncenter" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/apple_iphone_7-exploded_view.jpg?x44794" alt="iPhone 7 teardown" width="2400" height="2051" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/apple_iphone_7-exploded_view.jpg 2400w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/apple_iphone_7-exploded_view-300x256.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/apple_iphone_7-exploded_view-768x656.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/apple_iphone_7-exploded_view-1024x875.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/apple_iphone_7-exploded_view-95x80.jpg 95w" sizes="(max-width: 2400px) 100vw, 2400px" /></p>
<p>IHS first x-rayed the cost of last year&#8217;s iPhone 6s and got an estimated production cost of about $211.50 which ordinarily suggests this year&#8217;s iPhone 7 will cost more. Considering the base storage has been ramped up from 16GB to 32GB and that could have affected the production cost. Apart from that, the new chips on the iPhone 7 could also have affected the final production cost. The A10 chip is estimated by IHS to cost $26.90, then the new display cost an estimated $43 to produce as well as the cameras coming in at $19.90 per iPhone unit.</p>
<p>Though Apple is not keen on discussing tear-down costs, this estimated data could indicate mounting pressure on the US-based company&#8217;s profit margin, because the cost may even be more. IHS didn&#8217;t take into consideration factors like warehousing, research and development, and marketing.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-98818 aligncenter" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/apple-iphone-7-cost.png?x44794" alt="iPhone 7" width="937" height="529" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/apple-iphone-7-cost.png 937w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/apple-iphone-7-cost-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/apple-iphone-7-cost-768x434.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 937px) 100vw, 937px" /></p>
<p>The iPhone 7 even at that is considered to carry an outrageous price tag considering its specs. Reference have been made to competitively priced flagships whose specs are at par with the iPhone 7&#8217;s. The most recent is the LeEco Le Pro 3 which despite having a Snapdragon 821 chipset and a huge 4070mAh battery, starts at 1799 Yuan ($270). The Le Pro 3 pricing highlights LeEco&#8217;s negative profit pricing strategy for devices. The company makes up for this by getting more people onto the expansive LeEco Ecosystem from where it aims to make profits when users buy contents, applications and services on their platform.</p>
<p>(<a href="https://technology.ihs.com/583691/iphone-7-materials-costs-higher-than-previous-versions-ihs-markit-teardown-reveals" target="_blank"><span style="color: #3366ff">Source</span></a>)</p>
