However, OnePlus doesn’t market this feature, at least it didn’t do so for the OnePlus 9 Pro. If you are wondering why then you will be interested in the CEO’s explanation.

Pete Lau (Liu Zuohu) took to Weibo to reaffirm that the OnePlus 9 Pro has an IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating which he says is evidence of the phone’s durability and higher quality. However, they do not market the feature just like a lot of other brands because the testing to receive the rating is done under specific laboratory conditions.

Since usage and operating conditions will vary from person to person, it is impossible to meet the laboratory conditions that earned the device its IP rating. This is why even if the device meets the IP rating requirement, it is not recommended to market the feature.

Save for rugged phones, most manufacturers don’t advertise the IP rating of their phones. Not only don’t they advertise it but damages caused by liquids are not covered under warranty. OnePlus even says on the OnePlus 9 Pro’s product page that water and dust resistance may reduce as the device ages.

The OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus 9 Pro, and OnePlus 9 (T-Mobile version) are the OnePlus phones with an official IP68 rating. These phones will survive an accidental drop in water or a spill but we will advise users to not intentionally immerse their phones in water just for the fun of it.

The manufacturer has announced that the Mi 11 Ultra, which will be unveiled tomorrow, will have an IP68 rating.

For years, fans have demanded a fully waterproof device from Xiaomi, but instead, it had settled for just making phones with protection against splashes. That changes with the Mi 11 Ultra. The phone will be water-resistant up to 1.5 meters and for a duration of 30 minutes.

Xiaomi has also said that the phone will be the first to have a gas (Helium) release valve, allowing you to release the built-up pressure inside the device. A Helium Release Valve is found in professional diving watches, and it allows divers to release the built-up pressure caused by helium gas molecules that got into the watch. If not released, the pressure can damage the watch and even cause the dial to pop off.

So far, Xiaomi has confirmed that the Mi 11 Ultra will feature a new battery technology that uses silicone-oxide for the anode. It will also come with a phase (solid-liquid-gas) changing cooing technology for more efficient cooling.

The Mi 11 Ultra will have a QHD+ AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and a punch hole for the front-facing camera. Powering it will be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 processor. The flagship phone will also come with Samsung’s 50MP ISOCELL GN2 sensor, the largest mobile camera sensor in the world. There will also be a 48MP ultrawide angle camera, and a periscope lens camera that brings up to 120X zoom.

The flagship will have a 5000mAh battery with support for 67W fast wired charging, 67W fast wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging. Xiaomi will ship it with Android 11 based on MIUI 12.5.

Just a few hours ago, Sammobile had exclusively reported that Samsung Galaxy A52 5G‘s display will support a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Now, Abhishek says that the device will come with an IP67 rating for Water and Dust resistance.

For the unware, IP is an Ingress Protection rating as per IEC(International Electrotechnical Commission)’s EN 60529 standard. It is the degree of protection given to a mechanical/electrical enclosure and based on the type & intensity of intrusion, the rating varies.

Samsung isn’t new to the IP-rating either. Its Galaxy-S series flagships including the recently launched Galaxy S21 have had it. In fact, the older Galaxy-A devices like the Galaxy A8(2018) have had IP68-rating to protect the device against dust/water splashes.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is IP67 certified explained.https://t.co/VaS90EMaI0

Anyway, we just hope that Samsung brings this IP-rating to the 4G variant too. Speaking of which, the Galaxy A52 is expected to come in 4G and 5G variants. They are likely to share similar specs except for the chipset inside.

The 5G variant will feature a 6.5-inch S-AMOLED FHD+ Infinity-O display, Snapdragon 750G chipset, 6/8GB RAM, 128/256GB storage, 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast charging.

For cameras, it will have a Quad rear camera mostly with 64MP main, 12MP ultra-wide, two 5MP Macro&Depth sensors, and a 32MP selfie shooter upfront. The device is also expected to run Android 11 with One UI 3.1 on top.

Even the Galaxy S5 had an IP67 rating but Samsung decided to skip the feature when it announced the Galaxy S6. All three models of the new Galaxy S21 series also have an IP68 rating.

Following the launch of the new flagships, we have seen durability and drop tests of various models. Now, one YouTuber has decided to put the Galaxy S21 through an insane water resistance test…..and it has been going on for 11 days and counting!

The YouTube Chanel, Photo Owl Time Lapse, has been running a “waterproof test” on Samsung’s latest phone, the Galaxy S21 for more than a week now. The channel is known for its time-lapse videos but is currently live-streaming the test on YouTube.

If you are wondering how the phone is being charged, the explanation provided is that there is a wireless charger that is charging the device through the walls of the water tank.

The description of the video says that they have had to bring out the phone twice to reset the timer as the built-in stopwatch doesn’t go beyond 99 hours 59 minutes and 59 seconds.

The description also reveals that the phone gave a moisture detection warning after being under the water for 117 hours and 53 minutes. The screen was also unresponsive at this point and the phone jumped from app to app on its own. After 241 hours, they decided to test to see how the speakers were holding up but they were barely working.

The Galaxy S21’s IP68 rating is an indication that the phone will survive immersion in water up to 1.5 meters deep for 30 minutes. The water tank used for the test is not even up to half the maximum depth supported which explains why the test is likely going on for so long.

Like other manufacturers with an IP68 rating, Samsung will not honor the warranty of a phone if it gets damaged by water. So don’t go testing your device to see if its water-resistant claims are true.

We already know it is the first OnePlus phone with support for wireless charging. We also know it is the first to have a MEMC chip that upscales videos and games from 24fps to a higher frame rate. A complete spec sheet leak by Winfuture.de has revealed the phone will also be the first with an IP68 certification.

While some of OnePlus’s previous phones are waterproof to an extent, OnePlus has never gotten an IP certification for any of its devices. If you remember, OnePlus said you can dunk the OnePlus 7 Pro in a bucket of water even though it doesn’t have an IP-rating. In the video ad, they explained why the phone does not have an IP-rating and that is because it costs money which they would have to include in the cost of production and then pass on to buyers.

With the OnePlus 8 Pro getting an IP-rating, it means buyers will be paying more for the phone. Yes, we already expect the new phone will cost more compared to its predecessor. However, it also means OnePlus can further justify the higher price tag with the IP-rating.

Sadly, the OnePlus 8 doesn’t have an IP-rating but it will be nice to know if it is water-resistant to an extent.

The OnePlus 8 series launches on April 14, a month earlier than the launch date of the OnePlus 7 series last year. OnePlus will also announce a couple of new accessories including a wireless charger and a pair of new Bullets Wireless earphones.

Wait! Carl Pei teased a power bank back in February but we have not heard anything new. Let’s hope OnePlus surprises us with a new power bank with support for Warp Charge.

UP NEXT: OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z will have 20-hour battery life and Warp Charge
