<p>Apple has submitted a new patent revealing that they can increase the battery&#8217;s capacity without increasing the size. Android devices are emerging with brand-new fast-charging technologies and high battery capacities recently, to the point that battery <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/03/26/tecno-pova-6-pro-6000mah-battery-70w-charging/">capacities exceeding 5000 mAh</a> are quite common now. Apple is also now trying to offer bigger capacity batteries in its phones.</p>

<h2>Apple&#8217;s new patent on bigger capacity batteries at same size</h2>

<p>Apple&#8217;s new patent, named &#8220;<strong>Battery cells with tabs at right angle</strong>,&#8221; indicates that the capacity of new batteries by Apple can be increased without enlarging the battery size. This patent was filed in September 2021 first and was published on March 26, 2024. Apple has been researching methods such as membranes and foldable battery components to enhance battery life.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="623" data-id="614008"  src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/iPhone-battery-patent.png-1024x623.webp?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-614008" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/iPhone-battery-patent.png-1024x623.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/iPhone-battery-patent.png-300x183.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/iPhone-battery-patent.png-768x467.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/iPhone-battery-patent.png-696x423.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/iPhone-battery-patent.png-690x420.webp 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/iPhone-battery-patent.png.webp 1047w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
<figcaption class="blocks-gallery-caption">Apple&#8217;s new battery patent</figcaption></figure>

<p>Moreover, Apple&#8217;s new patent suggests that the <strong>battery connector</strong> for future iPhones could be something different than we&#8217;ve been familiar and different from the conventional battery type. Apple indicates that achieving a high-capacity battery is related to the tab locations in the battery. Apple explains this as follows:</p>

<p>&#8220;While one set of connectors may include tabs extending from a surface in a first direction, the other set of connectors may include tabs extending from a surface substantially perpendicular to the first direction. This may not only address issues with space constraints but may also provide improvements in resistance across the cell, which can improve the efficiency of the battery.&#8221;</p>

<p>Since Apple has just released this patent, it is not easy to have the new battery tech with iPhone 16 series. However, if things proceed as planned by Apple, the iPhones with large batteries might not be too far off. <a href="https://www.macobserver.com/news/iphone-battery-patent-apple/">The Mac Observer</a> also points out that the new battery could be offered in iPhone 16 series.</p>

<p>Stability is likely one of the most important aspects for Apple. Instead of integrating the latest technologies when releasing a new product, the company provides users with features that have been on the market for some time but are now much more advanced. Although this approach is criticized by some users, it instills a sense of confidence in many because it helps prevent new systems from causing problems and negatively impacting the user experience. However, Apple cannot completely eliminate issues. According to recent reports, severe battery swelling issues have been reported in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 Pro within six months of purchase.</p>

<h2><strong>Severe Battery Swelling Issues Reported in iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 Pro Within Six Months of Purchase</strong></h2>

<p>Recently, some iPhone users reported severe battery swelling issues on the internet. They expressed concerns about the quality of the batteries in certain iPhone models, specifically the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-13/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 13</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-14-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 14 Pro</a>. These users claim that the issue arose despite normal usage of their devices. One user, who purchased an iPhone 14 Pro in December last year, stated that the Apple battery quality issue led to significant swelling. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="536" height="749" data-id="536682"  src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/iphone-13-iphone-14-pro-battery-swelling-issues-1.webp?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-536682" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/iphone-13-iphone-14-pro-battery-swelling-issues-1.webp 536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/iphone-13-iphone-14-pro-battery-swelling-issues-1-215x300.webp 215w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/iphone-13-iphone-14-pro-battery-swelling-issues-1-301x420.webp 301w" sizes="(max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px" /></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="586" height="745" data-id="536683"  src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/iphone-13-iphone-14-pro-battery-swelling-issues-2.webp?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-536683" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/iphone-13-iphone-14-pro-battery-swelling-issues-2.webp 586w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/iphone-13-iphone-14-pro-battery-swelling-issues-2-236x300.webp 236w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/iphone-13-iphone-14-pro-battery-swelling-issues-2-330x420.webp 330w" sizes="(max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px" /></figure>
</figure>

<p>The swelling was so severe that it forced the screen to pry open. Despite this, Apple&#8217;s customer support allegedly refused to address the problem with a responsible attitude. The user reportedly called Apple&#8217;s technical support three times. A senior advisor initially promised to replace the device if the battery issue was proven to be a quality problem, but later changed their stance and denied the promise.</p>

<p>Photos shared by users show the screen of the affected <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-14-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 14 Pro</a> protruding, presumably due to the swollen battery. It&#8217;s worth noting that other iPhone 14 Pro users have also encountered battery swelling issues. However, when they sent their devices to Apple&#8217;s customer support, the company rejected the complaints and returned the devices. </p>

<p>Surprisingly, upon return, the battery swelling issue had disappeared, but the battery was displayed as an &#8220;unknown component.&#8221; The user suspects that Apple replaced the original battery without acknowledging the repair. According to the claims, this is not an isolated case of iPhone batteries swelling.</p>

<p>However, it cannot be ruled out that the battery swelling issues may have been caused by users placing their phones in high-temperature environments or charging them under high-temperature conditions. Further investigation is required to determine the root cause of these problems and whether they are indeed due to manufacturing defects or user habits.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a> is trying to defend itself against a $2 billion mass lawsuit filed in London, where the tech giant stands accused of concealing defective batteries in millions of iPhones. The company has called the lawsuit &#8220;baseless&#8221; and is seeking its dismissal in the UK court.</p>

<h2>Apple denies battery defects in response to UK class action lawsuit</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="800" height="533" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Apple-lawsuit.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-534332" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Apple-lawsuit.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Apple-lawsuit-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Apple-lawsuit-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Apple-lawsuit-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Apple-lawsuit-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption>Sergei Elagin / Shutterstock.com</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The lawsuit, filed by consumer advocate Justin Gutmann on behalf of UK iPhone users, alleges that Apple hid battery issues in certain phone models by &#8220;throttling&#8221; them with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/software-update/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">software updates</a>. The company is said to have &#8220;surreptitiously&#8221; installed a power management tool that limited performance. Apple, however, denies that its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone</a> batteries were defective, except for a small number of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/apple-iphone-6s/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iPhone 6s</a> models, for which it offered free battery replacements.</p>

<p>Apple maintains that the power management update it introduced in 2017 was designed to manage demands on older batteries or those with a low level of charge. According to the company, the update only reduced an iPhone 6&#8217;s performance by an average of 10%. Gutmann has requested that London&#8217;s Competition Appeal Tribunal certify the case, allowing it to proceed toward trial.</p>

<p>The company&#8217;s defense is bolstered by its 2020 <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/03/03/apple-to-settle-slowing-iphones-lawsuit-500-million/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">agreement to settle a US class action</a> and regulatory action by US states over iPhone battery issues. Gutmann&#8217;s lawyer, Philip Moser, cites this as evidence that Apple is not &#8220;saying this never happened.&#8221; Additionally, Apple committed to being &#8220;clearer and more upfront&#8221; about battery health with iPhone users, as agreed with Britain&#8217;s competition watchdog in 2019.</p>

<p>Despite these agreements, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a> denies allegations that it misled customers about iPhone <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/battery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">battery</a> issues. The company has pointed to a public apology it issued in 2017, in which it offered cheaper battery replacements to affected customers as proof of its transparency.</p>

<p>In court filings, Apple&#8217;s lawyer David Wolfson argues that the lawsuit effectively alleges that &#8220;not all batteries could deliver the peak power demanded in all circumstances at all times&#8221;, a claim that he says is common to all battery-powered devices. The tech giant is determined to fight the accusations and seeks to have the case dismissed in the UK court.</p>

Reports indicated that the series <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/07/26/apple-iphone-13-25w-charging/">will support 25W fast charging technology</a>. Now, in addition to the previous leak, we&#8217;ve another battery-related leak. This time it&#8217;s about the increased battery size and smaller components in the upcoming iPhones.</p>
<p>According to <em>Digitimes</em>, Apple will equip bigger batteries for upcoming iPhones. That said, this would only happen after getting some extra space to place the bigger battery cell. It is said that Apple will use smaller components in order to save space for this bigger battery.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-403949 " src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Upcoming-iPhones-to-use-smaller-components-to-save-for-a-bigger-battery.jpg?x10805" alt="Upcoming iPhones to use smaller components to save for a bigger battery: Report" width="483" height="362" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Upcoming-iPhones-to-use-smaller-components-to-save-for-a-bigger-battery.jpg 400w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Upcoming-iPhones-to-use-smaller-components-to-save-for-a-bigger-battery-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Upcoming-iPhones-to-use-smaller-components-to-save-for-a-bigger-battery-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Upcoming-iPhones-to-use-smaller-components-to-save-for-a-bigger-battery-265x198.jpg 265w" sizes="(max-width: 483px) 100vw, 483px" /></p>
<p>Reportedly, Apple has also increased the adoption of IPD(Integrated Passive Devices) for the peripherals in the upcoming phones. Again, these peripherals would be smaller in size.</p>
<p>With a drastic increase in the adoption of IPDs, the chip manufacturing partners like TSMC and Amkor are slated to get solid business opportunities. Not just iPhones, even iPads, and MacBooks will get smaller components.</p>
<p>Additionally, Apple has also approved TSMC&#8217;s 6th generation chips for mass production. These chips will be used in upcoming phones.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-403948 " src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Upcoming-iPhones-to-use-smaller-components-to-save-for-a-bigger-battery-3.jpg?x10805" alt="Upcoming iPhones to use smaller components to save for a bigger battery: Report" width="436" height="245" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Upcoming-iPhones-to-use-smaller-components-to-save-for-a-bigger-battery-3.jpg 400w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Upcoming-iPhones-to-use-smaller-components-to-save-for-a-bigger-battery-3-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px" /></p>
<p>Moreover, a previous leak revealed that the Apple iPhone 13 series will be thicker in size as compared to the current iPhone 12 series. Although the leak from<em> Digitimes</em> didn&#8217;t really reveal if this year&#8217;s iPhone 13 series will equip these chips. But, we can at least expect future iPhones to get a big battery and smaller components.</p>
